Yu Ya had a dark line on his face. Nonsense, who didn't know that Yunyin Village must be in chaos now?
"As a genius of the Nara clan, don't you have the ability to handle this?" Yu Ya said happily to Nara Shikaya. "Go ahead, go ahead. I'll take credit for your success once the deal is settled."
Nara Shikaya's mouth twitched. You think I'm a fool, don't you? God knows if I'll make it back alive.
"Agent, you should send someone reliable to handle something like this," Shikaya protested. "I haven't mastered the Shadow Imitation Technique or the Substitution Technique. If I go, I'll be walking to my death!"
Yu Ya sneered. "Your father promised me that you're a master of the Shadow Clone and Shadow Imitation Techniques. Are you saying your father lied to me? If so, the Nara clan's monthly salary will be cut in half next month for deceiving the Hokage's agent."
"Don't!" Nara Shikaya became anxious immediately.
The concept of a "monthly salary" was straightforward enough. Konoha was generally too lazy to collect taxes from these clans annually, so instead, it subsidized them each year, distributing funds when the annual financial summary was completed. However, Yu Ya had distributed funds in the autumn of the 19th year of Konoha, even before the harvest was fully collected—and it was 10% more than the previous year.
Of course, that wasn't the main point. Besides the Uchiha and Nara clans, Yu Ya had given an additional subsidy: ten million taels. The other clans said nothing about this, but they took note of the implications.
The transfer order from the front lines came a few days later, reassigning Uchiha Kage from the ANBU Intelligence Division to the Security Section. It was clear whom this security detail was for. Other families saw it as a gamble. The Uchiha clan seemed to have thrown in their lot with the Hokage's office, while others hesitated.
People who already resented the Uchiha clan hated them even more now. Within the village, tensions rose, and the Uchiha's situation became more difficult. Those living on the outskirts, unaffected ordinary citizens, had no part in this. They had neither the wealth nor the time to concern themselves with ninja politics, unlike the clans who did.
Yu Ya, however, didn't care about these growing tensions. His support for the Uchiha clan had an ulterior motive: he wanted to win over Uchiha Kage. If Uchiha Kage truly showed loyalty to the village, it would be clear that family ties were still present. A person, even if they were disillusioned, wouldn't easily abandon what was familiar.
The other clans suspected that Yu Ya was attempting to bribe the Uchiha. But Yu Ya's true aim wasn't in gaining trust from the entire Uchiha clan—only Uchiha Kage. The Nara clan, on the other hand, found themselves in a difficult position.
When the Nara clan sent Shikaya to work under Yu Ya, the other clans noticed. After all, why had Yu Ya chosen to support the Nara clan financially? Why not another clan? It didn't take long for them to learn that Shikaya was handling minor tasks. This prompted laughter among the other clans, who were relieved they hadn't been the first to ally with Yu Ya.
The Nara clan had tried to hedge their bets, hoping to retain influence no matter which faction came out on top. If the Sarutobi or Shimura clans gained power, they could disassociate from Shikaya. But with Yu Ya's ten-million-tael investment, they were caught in an uncomfortable position. The sum was significant enough to consider, but not enough to secure complete loyalty or disdain.
Yu Ya had even suggested a "monthly salary" arrangement. The Nara clan didn't particularly need the money, but rejecting it would be foolish. A smart clan knows how to do the math, and the Nara clan realized accepting Yu Ya's funds would maximize their future benefits.
"You can't do this!" Nara Shikaya protested, looking desperate. "I'm working under you. Can't you be a bit more understanding?" His face looked pitiful.
Yu Ya laughed. "My man? Have you done anything useful for me? You've been eating and drinking without lifting a finger! You live more comfortably than me!"
Realizing the situation, Nara Shikaya sighed. "Fine, fine. You should have told me earlier. I'll help."
He grabbed half the documents on Yu Ya's desk and started doing calculations with pen and paper.
Yu Ya quickly snatched the documents back. "Hey! Don't mess around. These numbers are critical. If you make a mistake, we're doomed."
Nara Shikaya confidently patted his chest. "I promise I won't make a mistake."
Yu Ya rolled his eyes. "Fine, fine, stop with the theatrics. I'm too tired to argue. Just give me a piece of your clan's land for a school."
In Yu Ya's previous life, this request would have been exciting. Schools brought development, rising land values, and bustling commerce. But in this world, people didn't think that way.
"Please, no!" Nara Shikaya cried, hugging Yu Ya's legs. "Our land is tiny compared to the Uchiha, Sarutobi, and even the Shimura! We're already at a disadvantage."
Yu Ya sighed, exasperated. "Shikaya, I know your clan only sent you here as a formality. But I've noticed you're not an idiot. So, I'm offering you a real chance. Give me a quarter of your clan's land. I'll build a school for three years, and if it doesn't make 100 million taels annually, I'll pay you that amount every year as a subsidy. What do you say?"
Shikaya stared at Yu Ya, stunned. "Agent... are you serious?"
Yu Ya smirked. "Of course, I'm joking. Go home and rest."
Relieved, Shikaya quickly gathered his things and left. Yu Ya sighed, leaning back in the Hokage's office, his thoughts racing.
