Chapter 19 - Tides of change

The next morning, Lisa woke early, a sense of purpose igniting her spirit. She had barely slept, her mind racing with thoughts of Brian and the slight  movement of his fingers they had witnessed the night before. Hope had made  its way into her heart, and she felt determined to nurture it.

As she prepared for the day, Lisa chose a bright sundress, wanting to bring some color into Brian's room. She tied her hair into a loose bun, letting a few strands fall free around her face. "Today's going to be a good day," she whispered to herself, the words feeling like a mantra of faith.

When she arrived at the hospital, Mrs Priscilla was already there, her brow furrowed in concentration as she read a book beside Brian's bed. "Morning!" Lisa called, her voice brightening the room.

"Good morning! You look cheerful today," Mrs Priscilla replied, glancing up and returning Lisa's smile. "I'm hoping that energy translates to Brian."

"Me too," Lisa said, her eyes drifting to Brian, who lay still yet seemed more alive than before. His expression was peaceful, and there was an undeniable flicker in his eyes. "I really think he's fighting to come back to us."

Just as they were still exchanging pleasantries, a steady beeping noise began to escalate, drawing their attention to the monitors beside Brian's bed. The machine's alarm blared, slicing through the comfortable atmosphere.

"Wait, what's happening?" Mrs Priscilla asked, her voice rising in panic.

Lisa's heart raced. "I think—he's waking up!" Without hesitation, she rushed to the nurse's station, her footsteps echoing through the corridor as she called for help. "Someone! We need a doctor in here, now!"

The nurse responded swiftly, rushing to Brian's room alongside Lisa. In the meantime, Estabel called Mrs. Priscilla,

Moments later, the room filled with medical staffs, The doctors quickly assessed Brian, their serious faces reflecting the gravity of the situation.

"Everyone, step back," one of the doctors instructed, his tone commanding. He checked Brian's vitals while another doctor reviewed the charts.

As they worked, Lisa felt a whirlwind of emotions crashing over her. The uncertainty of Brian's future lingered in the air, but the strength of the love she had for him made her believe that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.

Just then, Dr. Smith walked out of  the room, a serious expression on his face. "Lisa, Mrs. Priscilla," he greeted, then turned to look at the door to Brians room. "I have some news regarding your son's condition, it might not be your expectations."

Lisa's heart raced. "Is he going to be okay?"

Dr. Smith took a deep breath, glancing at Brian before continuing. "He is conscious, but there are complications we need to address. Unfortunately, the scans indicate he has sustained significant damage to his optic nerves. We will need to operate on his eyes to assess the full extent of the damage."

"What does that mean for his sight?" Estabel  asked, her voice tight with worry.

Dr. Smith met her gaze. "It's too early to say definitively. There's a chance he may regain some sight, but we won't know until we conduct the surgery. It's a critical step, and we will only proceed when he has recovered fully."

The news hung heavily in the air. Lisa felt a mix of hope and despair. She wanted to believe in miracles, but the reality of Brian's situation loomed large.

Mrs. Priscilla stepped forward, her eyes filled with concern. "What can we do to help him?"

"Keep providing a positive atmosphere. Talk to him about things that make him feel loved and secure," the doctor advised. "Right now, that's the most important thing."

As the medical staff continued their assessments, Lisa turned to Brian, tears welling in her eyes. "We're all here for you, Brian. You're not alone. We believe in you."

Later in the day, as Lisa was  reading to the unresponsive Brian from one of his favorite books, she caught a glimpse of Mrs. Priscilla sitting quietly in the corner of the room. Her usual composed demeanor was overshadowed by concern.

"Mrs. Priscilla," Lisa said softly, putting down the book. "Would you like someone to talk to?"

Mrs. Priscilla looked up, her eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and sorrow. "Thank you, Lisa. I think I would  need that." She moved closer, taking a seat beside Lisa.

"It must be difficult for you," Lisa continued, searching for the right words. "Brian waking up and still being… well, you know. It's hard on all of us."

Mrs. Priscilla sighed, her gaze drifting to Brian's still figure. "I never imagined I would see my son in this condition. I had hoped that once he woke up, things would return to normal. But now… I fear for him. What kind of life will he have if he can't see?"

The weight of Mrs. Priscilla's worries hung heavy in the air. Lisa wanted to reach out and comfort her, to tell her everything would be alright, but deep down, she shared the same fears.

"Perhaps he'll adjust," Lisa offered, her voice steady. "He has you, and he has me. We'll help him through this. He's strong, and I believe he can overcome it."

Mrs. Priscilla looked at Lisa, her expression softening. "Thank you for being here for him. I know this is not easy for you."

"It's what couples do, stand by each other," Lisa replied, her heart swelling with the weight of her commitment. "I won't give up on him."

Just then, Estabel  walked into the room, her arms filled with fresh flowers. "Look what I brought!" she announced, a cheerful grin on her face, which quickly faded as she sensed the serious atmosphere. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt."

Not at all," Mrs. Priscilla said, a small smile breaking through her worry. "These flowers will brighten up the room."

Estabel  placed the flowers in a vase and stepped back, her eyes lingering on Brian.

The days that followed Brian's awakening were a blur of emotions, uncertainty, and fleeting moments of hope. Lisa and Estabel  visited him every day, sharing stories and encouraging him to respond. Brian remained largely unresponsive, only occasionally fluttering
