Chapter 2 - The darkness before dumpling

As she stood atop the Eclipse Building, her once-elegant face now haggard, her eyes swollen from crying, the city sprawled before her like a canvas of twinkling lights and dark shadows. Her hair was disheveled, tangled, and unkempt, framing her pale, sallow skin. Dark circles underscored her eyes, and her lips were parched, cracked, and pale. The youthful glow had vanished, replaced by a worn, exhausted look that added years to her face. The wind whispered secrets in her ear, but she was beyond listening. Her mind was a maelstrom of despair, consumed by the crushing weight of her circumstances.

Her phone pierced the silence, shattering her contemplation. She hesitated, then answered.

"Dumpling?" her voice cracked.

"Where are you?!" Dumpling's panicked voice screamed through the line. "Oh, God, I've been trying to reach you for 48 hours! I thought...I thought you'd done something stupid!" His words were laced with desperation, his voice hoarse from shouting. His baby-fat face was probably scrunched in worry, his eyes red-rimmed from lack of sleep.

"I...I'm fine," she lied, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Fine?!" Dumpling's tone turned incredulous. "You're not fine! You sound...broken. What's happening? Why did you disappear? I know about the embezzlement accusations. I've been digging into it. I know it's a setup."

She felt a spark of surprise. How did he?

"Dumpling...I..."

"Don't deny it! I've seen the evidence. I've been tracking the money trail. It's fake. Someone's framing you. Tell me where you are!"

His urgency jolted her. She hadn't realized he'd been searching for her.

"I...how did you...?"

"I hacked into CCTVs, cell towers...everything! I had to find you! What's going on? Why did you disappear?"

His words tumbled out in a frantic stream, punctuated by ragged breaths.

"Please...tell me you're okay. Please don't do anything stupid."

She felt a sob rising, but it got stuck in her throat.

"Dumpling...I..."

"Where are you?!" he shouted again, his voice cracking. "I'm coming for you! Just hold on! We'll get through this together!"

Tears burst forth, streaming down her face. She couldn't believe that even before he saw the charges, his first instinct was to trust her, to help her, to look for evidence.

"You believed me," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Without question...you believed me."

"Of course, I did!" Dumpling's voice softened. "I know you'd never do something like that. We'll clear your name, together."

His unwavering faith shattered her composure.

"I'm...at the Eclipse Building," she stammered between sobs.

"I'm on my way! Don't move! Don't do anything!"

His voice grew fainter, as if he was moving, running.

"Dumpling...please..."

"Just hold on! I'll be there! You're not alone!"

The line went silent, but she knew he was still there, tracking her, coming for her.

For the first time in days, a glimmer of hope flickered within her.

As she waited, she thought about Dumpling's unwavering loyalty. He'd always been there for her, a constant presence in her chaotic life. His trust and faith were a beacon in the darkness.

The city lights blurred together as tears streamed down her face. She felt a sense of relief wash over her. Dumpling was coming. He'd help her clear her name.

But doubts crept in. Who was behind the setup? And why?

The questions swirled in her mind as she waited for Dumpling's arrival.

Suddenly, the rooftop door swung open. Footsteps echoed.

"Dumpling?" she called out, her voice shaking.

"I'm here!" he replied, rushing toward her.

She saw him, his face etched with worry, his eyes red-rimmed.

Without a word, he enveloped her in a tight hug.

"You're safe now," he whispered.

For the first time in days, she felt a sense of peace.
