Chapter 3 - Betrayal and shadows

As they drove through the deserted roads, the she gazed out at the darkness, her thoughts still reeling from Dumpling's words. "You're not alone," he'd said, his voice filled with conviction. She felt a lump form in her throat as she turned to him.

Dumpling, sensing her emotions, offered a reassuring smile. "We'll get through this together. I've got a plan." His 14-year-old face, usually radiant with enthusiasm, now wore a determined look.

The safehouse, a nondescript cabin on the outskirts of town, blended seamlessly into the surroundings. Dumpling expertly navigated the winding paths, his hacking skills evident in his ability to evade detection.

Inside, the cabin was cozy, with rustic furnishings and a crackling fireplace. Dumpling handed her a steaming cup of coffee, his eyes sparkling with warmth.

"Now, let's get down to business," he said, pulling out his laptop. "I've been digging into the embezzlement accusations. It's a setup, just like I thought." His fingers flew across the keyboard as he explained.

She listened intently, her mind racing with questions. "Who could be behind this?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dumpling's expression turned grim. "That's what we need to find out. But first, we need to get you off the grid. The police are closing in." He handed her a burner phone.

As she took the phone, their eyes met, and she felt a surge of gratitude. "Thank you, Dumpling," she said, her voice trembling.

Dumpling's face softened. "You're family," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "We take care of each other." The fire crackled, casting a warm glow over the cabin.

In that moment, she felt a sense of belonging she'd never experienced before. Dumpling's unwavering loyalty and trust were a beacon in the darkness.

Now that they had a plan, her determination grew. She would clear her name, no matter the cost.

Thinking back to what her brother did, she let out a sigh of exhaustion.

(Flashback)

She rushed to her brother, Ryker's house, desperate for help. The weight of the embezzlement accusations and her family's rejection threatened to crush her. But when she arrived, his fiancée Sophia answered the door, her expression neutral.

"Ryker, it's your sister," Sophia said, her voice matter-of-fact, without warmth or hostility.

Ryker appeared behind her, his scathing glances making her shrink. "What do you want?" he spat, his tone venomous.

She pleaded with him to listen, to help her clear her name. But Ryker's response was unforgiving.

"Stay away from me, and don't drag Sophia into your mess," he snarled. "You're toxic, and I won't let you ruin our lives."

Sophia stood by him, her eyes cast downward, her hands clasped together. "I don't think we should get involved," she said softly, her voice lacking conviction.

Ryker nodded in agreement. "Sophia's right. You're always causing drama. We can't afford to be associated with you."

She felt a sting from Sophia's words, but Ryker's agreement hurt more. His rejection, combined with Sophia's detachment, left her reeling.

"You're okay with this, Ryker?" She asked, her voice shaking. "You're just going to turn your back on me?"

Ryker's gaze locked onto hers, his eyes cold. "I know Sophia can come across as...direct," he said, his tone unapologetic. "But I love her for who she is. She's honest, and that's what I need."

Sophia's expression remained subdued, her eyes still cast downward.

The door slammed shut, leaving her vulnerable and heartbroken.

She couldn't help herself. She needed to see them one more time.

She followed Ryker and Sophia, keeping a safe distance, as they headed to an upscale restaurant.

They laughed and smiled, oblivious to her presence.

Hours passed, and darkness fell. Ryker and Sophia arrived at an upscale restaurant, laughing and smiling together. They were seated at a cozy table by the window, the candlelight casting a warm glow.

Sophia gazed at Ryker with affection, her eyes warm and gentle.

Ryker's eyes never left hers, his expression soft. "You're amazing, Sophia. Your honesty, your kindness...it's what drew me to you."

Sophia's smile was gentle. "I just want what's best for us, Ryker."

Ryker's voice was low, husky. "I know you do, Sophia. And that's what I love about you."

As they savored their dinner, she faded into the background, invisible and insignificant. Ryker knew Sophia's indifference toward his sister, but his love for her overshadowed all else.

Their love was a puzzle she couldn't solve. Ryker accepted Sophia's flaws, and she accepted his unwavering loyalty. But her, she was the outsider, the one who didn't fit.
