Chapter Two: Shadows of the Past
The golden rays of dawn bathed Valen Academy in a warm glow, dispelling the night's shadows. As Elion and his friends finished their training, sweat glistening on their brows, they gathered in a circle to discuss their next steps. The camaraderie they shared felt like an anchor, but the weight of their impending quest lurked just beneath the surface.
"Let's not waste any time," Elion said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "We need to find out more about the Shadow Crystal. Finn, what's our first move?"
Finn nodded, collecting his scattered notes. "The texts suggest there are old ruins beyond the Whispering Wood, just past the Fowl River. It's likely a gathering point for anyone interested in dark relics. The crystal may lie hidden there."
Mira crossed her arms, her expression serious for a change. "The Whispering Wood is known for its illusions and strange creatures. Navigating it could be dangerous. The last thing we need is to get lost or ambushed."
"We'll stick close together. Lira, can you cover our path with protective wards?" Elion asked.
"Of course," Lira replied, her expression determined. "I'll make sure nothing follows us."
"Then it's settled. We prepare and head out as soon as possible," Elion said, a sense of purpose building inside him.
With plans made, the group dispersed to gather supplies. Elion took a moment to reflect, staring at the distant forest where wisps of fog danced like specters between the trees. He felt the weight of responsibility: as their leader, he had to ensure their safety while confronting the remnants of darkness that haunted his own past.
Later that afternoon, Elion stood at the academy's entrance, a rucksack slung over his shoulder filled with essential supplies: food, water, and a few healing potions. Lira approached him, her expression unreadable.
"Are you alright?" she asked softly, concern in her eyes. "You seem distant."
Elion sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I just can't shake the feeling that we're walking into a trap. The cult we defeated was only one part of the darkness. What if there are more powerful forces at play?"
