Chapter 13 - Back as The Spider

The Next Morning:

Deon swings through the early morning streets of Harlem, the chill of winter biting at his face through the mask. As Spider-Man, he's always alert, his senses finely tuned to the rhythm of the city. But even up here, amidst the rooftops and skyline, his thoughts drift back to the ground—to the life he's trying to build as Deon Morales.

It's never simple, he thinks to himself.

Between helping Phin launch Tinkers, supporting Hailey's artistic endeavors, and being there for his mom, Deon's civilian life has never been more demanding. And yet, there's always the other part of him—the Spider-Man part—that constantly pulls him away, especially now as crime has started to rise again.

How do you balance the weight of the city and the weight of your personal life?

Just as the thought crosses his mind, a police siren echoes from below. Instinctively, Deon changes course, his web-swinging now carrying him towards the source of the commotion. A robbery at a local bodega. It's quick work for Spider-Man—an adrenaline rush as he disarms the thieves, webs them up, and leaves a witty note for the authorities.

But as he finishes, he checks his watch. 8:42 AM. He's already running late for a meeting with Phin and potential investors. He swings faster, changing out of his suit in a quiet alleyway before jogging to the meeting spot.

Later, at Phin's Office:

"I was starting to think you weren't coming," Phin teases as Deon enters, slightly out of breath.

"I'm here, aren't I?" Deon smiles, trying to play it off.

The meeting is intense, filled with financial jargon, tech presentations, and talks of scaling Tinkers into something massive. Deon does his best to contribute, but his mind keeps wandering back to the city, wondering what's happening out there while he's here.

After the investors leave, Phin notices his distracted state. "You okay?"

"Yeah... yeah, just thinking about everything," Deon says, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's a lot, you know? Helping you with Tinkers, making sure my mom's good, supporting Hailey..."

Phin crosses her arms, giving him a knowing look. "And Spider-Man stuff too, right?"

Deon's eyes widen slightly. He's never outright confirmed his identity to Phin, but she's always been sharp. "I—uh..."

"You don't have to say anything. I get it. Just... remember you're not alone in this, okay? Whatever you're juggling, you've got us."

The reminder brings a small sense of relief. Deon nods, appreciating her support more than words can express.

With the successful launch of Tinkers and the positive reception of Phin's tech during Hailey's mural event, Phin is more determined than ever to push the boundaries of what her company can do. Her vision has evolved from simply creating gadgets to using technology to solve some of the world's most pressing problems.

A Week Later: In Phin's Lab

Deon steps into Phin's lab, greeted by the soft hum of machinery and the glow of holographic screens displaying various projects she's been working on. One screen shows the prototype for a compact, self-sustaining energy generator—Phin's latest breakthrough. It's the key to her dream of revolutionizing clean energy.

"This... this is going to change everything," Deon says, staring at the holographic display of the generator.

Phin nods, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "It's not just about making energy more sustainable. It's about making it accessible. Imagine entire cities running on energy that's not only clean but free. No more power outages, no more people struggling to pay their bills because of inflated energy costs."

Deon can't help but admire her ambition. She's thinking beyond just profits—she's thinking about how this tech can uplift communities, how it can make life better for people like those in Harlem.

But with this level of innovation comes risk. Phin's work is attracting attention—not just from investors and tech enthusiasts but from those who would want to exploit her inventions for their own gain. Deon knows the dangers of this world all too well.

"You've gotta be careful, Phin," Deon says, his tone serious. "When you're dealing with tech this advanced, there are people out there who won't think twice about taking it from you. And not everyone's gonna use it the way you intend."

Phin looks at him, her expression a mix of determination and caution. "I know. That's why I've been working on security protocols. But... it's more than just the tech I need to protect. Tinkers is our legacy, Deon. And I can't let anything—or anyone—destroy that."

Deon feels a protective instinct rise within him. "You won't have to worry about that. I've got your back."

The Challenge of Balancing Both Worlds

As Deon's life grows more complicated, the lines between his personal life and his responsibilities as Spider-Man begin to blur. On one hand, he's deeply invested in Phin's success at Tinkers, in helping her achieve something that could change the world. On the other, the city still needs him. Crime doesn't stop, even when life gets busy.

And then there's Hailey, who's gearing up for her next big art installation, and Rio, who's planning more community rallies. Deon feels the weight of it all pressing down on him.

One Night, on a Rooftop:

Deon sits on a rooftop, looking out over Harlem. It's quiet for now, the city streets below bustling with normal life. But he knows that at any moment, something could pull him away—another crime, another emergency.

His phone buzzes. It's a text from Phin: "Got another investor meeting tomorrow. You in?"

Right after that, another text from Hailey: "Finishing up the sketches for the new mural. Want to come by and check them out?"

And finally, a message from his mom: "Need your help with the rally prep, mijo. Think you can swing by?"

Deon sighs, running a hand through his hair. He looks down at his Spider-Man mask, sitting beside him, and then back at the messages on his phone. It's getting harder and harder to keep everything balanced.
