Chapter 8 - Another One

In the distant vision, Uche could see a young woman in her early twenties lying on the floor, her face slightly flushed as goosebumps prickled her skin. She appeared to be letting out a stifled scream, and Uche could feel her desperation.

A strong hand was wrapped around her neck, and she struggled to breathe.

Veins, pink and bulging, crawled across her forehead, making it look as if they might burst at any moment with her eyes almost popping out of her head. The grip on her neck showed no sign of relenting.

Uche's heart raced as he whispered.

"That bastard... he's killing another one."

His voice trembled, filled with a mix of horror, fear and anger.

The vision shifted between the woman and a phone lying beside her, ringing insistently. Minutes passed, each second stretching out in a suffocating silence, or rather, what Uche thought was a silent as he couldn't hear if any of them was speaking.

The woman's eyes slowly fluttered shut; her bulging veins receded, her lips quivering as they finally sealed shut. Life seeped away from her, and the grip on her neck slackened.

The culprit stood up, or so, Uche thought he stood up, as the perspective changed abruptly.

Now, from above, Uche could see the woman's body, which meant the culprit was standing. The view moved around, as if the killer was scanning the surroundings.

Uche's heart raced, faster like the seconds of a tickling clock when he mistakenly spotted something. He almost fell from his chair.

"What the hell?"

He gasped.

Through the vision, he realized the killer was standing on the ceiling of a tall building, a very tall building that was at least fifty stories high. But what truly shocked him was the sight of his own house, tiny and distant, just beyond the cityscape, he could clearly see it from the towering building the killer was standing on.

Which means one thing.

The killer was close—too close.

Uche couldn't fathom how he could see his house so clearly from that height, but there was no time to dwell on that. The knowledge that the killer was nearby sent chills down his spine.

The vision continued as the figure walked toward the lifeless body, two hands grabbing her and hurling her down from the top of the building. Uche wanted to scream, shout at the man to stop, but he knew it would be futile; the killer wouldn't hear him. He could only imagine the horror of the woman's body splattering on the ground below, turning into a bloody pulp.

At least, if she's not a Connect like him.

The bastard walked back, paused to look at the ringing phone, and then stepped on it with his polished brown shoe. Just like that, the vision faded away, leaving Uche in stunned silence, with only one thought echoing in his mind:

'I need to get him, I must catch the bastard today.'

He glanced out of his window, determination fueling him.

"There's only one building in this area that's as tall as that."

Without wasting another second, Uche rushed out of his house. He sprinted down the street, his mind racing as adrenaline coursed through him.

A couple minutes later, he arrived in front of a tall building made entirely out of polished glass. It towered above him, its sleek exterior reflecting the sky above.

Uche ignored the commotion outside as he burst into the building, rushing toward the elevator, intent on reaching the top floor as quickly as possible.

'Brown shoes, pale skin, and a black suit.'

Uche recall this three traits as the elevator ascend, with his single eye moving through the descending elevator, trying to spot any of these traits.

Finally, as the elevator reached the 45th floor, where a spacious lobby could be seen bustling with people moving, Uche scanned through the lobby and his heart skipped a beat when he spotted a young man stepping out of a descending elevator.

He failed to move his gaze away from the young man who wore a pair brown shoes and a black suit, his back was turned, preventing Uche from seeing his face.

"That bastard."

Without a moment of hesitation, Uche pressed the large red emergency button, causing the elevator to stop abruptly. The doors slid open in an instant, and he bolted out, calling out;

"Hey, bastard! Stop there!"

He raced through the lobby, making a sharp left turn as the man did, then another left turn, following the man's movement, which led him into the men's restroom.

"Bastard! Killer! Stop right there!"

Uche shouted, anger surging through him as he saw a door closing behind the man. He rushed to it, banging on the door with all his might.

"Come out here now before I call the cops! You think I didn't see you, huh? Killer!"

Uche shouted, each word fueled by fear and urgency as he continued banging the door.

Suddenly, an angry, portly man emerged from the restroom, shoving the door open and nearly knocking Uche off his feet.

"Who the hell are you? Have you lost your mind?"

The man shouted, frustration etched across his face.

Uche paused, momentarily taken aback. He examined the man's face, trying to determine if he had made a mistake, he is very sure that he saw the young man entered the restroom, but how did he changed, turning into this annoying fat man.

He really didn't know what to say.

"The killer, I have him come in here, he killed the woman, strangled her to death and tossed her down from the building."

Uche said, his voice cracked as his single eye moves around.

The man stepped back, staring at Uche before shouting and rushed out.

"What? You must have gone crazy, I need to call the cops."

Before Uche could respond or run after the man, something caught his eye. He glanced down through the open space of the restroom door and saw it—the unmistakable brown shoe, black trousers, and matching socks.

A smile appeared on his face.

"Bastard, finally caught you!"

Uche declared.

"Turns out i didn't made a mistake. Snowflake, is it?"
