And then bubbles began to come up from deep below the surface of the lake. The thing was that this wasn't just a few, little bubbles began to pop on the filmy lake growing and growing until it looked like the whole lake was simmering. And then a huge bubble so large that it filled up half the lake.

The little bubbles continued to simmer, but mostly now just around the shore when the level of the lake began to rise. Quietly, little by little the water seemed to be pushed up and out until the center of the lake rose like a pregnant belly some two or three meters above the shore level. It depended on how you measured the lowest water level.
