Life never stays perfect for too long. It would be against the laws of nature if happiness lasted uninterrupted until you get tired of it. At least that was Weiwei's sentiment when, after the meeting with Lawyer Li, she began noticing Qi getting preoccupied with thought.
At first, she thought it had to do with his grandfather. Then she thought it had to do with adjusting to living together as boyfriend and girlfriend.
However, she couldn't find any specific triggers for these periods of brooding, other than some money-related words or actions.
Does it have to do with the coins?
Was it possible that Qi minded her having the sudden windfall?
Is he uncomfortable with me having more money than he does? That would be ridiculous – I don't care whether he has more or less. On the other hand, in all the movies they show how insecure men could be when at financial disadvantage.
Weiwei thought that Qi, the best person she knew, should be above it.
"I should ask him directly," she thought, sitting on a sofa with Qi, rubbing her cheek against his. "But how should I ask and not hurt his pride? Maybe later."
"Have you talked to your grandpa?" Weiwei asked instead.
Qi nodded slightly, trying not to interrupt her cuddling up. "Yes, he texted me yesterday."
"Did you apologize and make peace?" she murmured.
That made Qi turn his head and look at her. He seemed a little irked. "Why should I apologize? I didn't do anything to apologize for. He kicked me out of the company and my home. I did what he asked me to do–I went on that trip and got everything he asked me to take care of signed."
Weiwei purred. "I know, I know, but he's your grandpa, you should forgive him. I'm sure he cares about you, but just can't show it, just like you don't want to show that you care about him."
Qi flashed his eyebrows, seemingly considering what she said.
Ah, men and their pride. They are more childish than women sometimes.
"At least don't make it more difficult for him to make peace with you, okay?" she said. "Promise?"
Qi smiled and nodded. "Okay."
"Oh, by the way," Weiwei sat up. "My friend Ruxuan told me that Director Zhang is returning to his position in the company. What happened?"
"Your friend seems to know everything," Qi said, chuckling.
"You mean you knew about it? Why didn't you tell me?"
Qi shrugged. "I didn't think you worried about the man."
Worried about the man! Who says it like that!
"I'm not worried about him, but I think it's the news that concern my former department. I wish you'd told me."
Qi wrapped his hands around her waist and kissed her on the forehead. "I'm sorry. I meant to tell you, but got distracted. I just heard about it last night."
"You should've told me right away," said Qi peevishly.
"I'm sorry, I'll do it right away next time, I promise."
That's better.
"What did you get distracted with anyway?"
"Well," Qi looked a bit flustered again.
Fine, I'll ask you straight up.
"Is it about the coins?"
Qi looked at Weiwei. "No, it's not."
"Do you really mind me getting them?"
"Of course not!"
Weiwei narrowed her eyes skeptically. "Maybe not the coins themselves, but their value. You started acting differently lately. Or are you having second thoughts about us dating?"
Qi shook his head firmly. "Never! Don't let your imagination wander. I'm as happy as I could be."
It doesn't look like that to me.
"Fine," Weiwei said. "Now, tell me all about Director Zhang."
"I don't know much more about Mr. Zhang," replied Qi. "But I can tell you – you must keep it to yourself for now – that Lántiān Group just fired their CFO and are considering to reinstate TTT as their auditors."
"No way!"
Qi kissed her again. "Is that a happy exclamation?"
"Of course! It means that I wasn't wrong, after all." Weiwei wrapped her hands around Qi's neck and hugged him tight. "Finally, I won't feel guilty about what happened with Lántiān!"
"It was never your fault," Qi replied, caressing her hair. "Everything you did was for the best. Think about it this way: if there wasn't the Lántiān scandal, I wouldn't get kicked out of my home. And I also wouldn't have to travel abroad."
He's right! The Lántiān ordeal forced us closer together. Aye, everything turns out fine in the end! As they say, follow fate and move forward!
"Wait." Another thought occurred to Weiwei. "What about Yihan then? In that case she should get reinstated as well, shouldn't she?"
"I don't know those details, but I'd say both you and her should be definitely reinstated."
Weiwei thought it over.
Do I want to go back to TTT? I'd love to return to my normal life, but wouldn't it be complicated if I continue dating Qi? I don't want to be treated differently at work just because I'm his girlfriend. No one is going to admit it to my face, but I'm sure they will talk about me having a backer and being a gold digger, dating him on purpose…
Weiwei sighed.
"Why are you upset?" Qi asked.
Weiwei frowned. "I don't know if I'd be able to go back to TTT."
"Why not?" Qi asked, showing surprise.
"Are you going back?"
Qi shrugged. "I don't know. Is that going to be an issue?"
"Well…"
Qi took her hand. "Don't worry, then I won't go back."
"No! What are you saying!" protested Weiwei. "It's your family's company, you must go back!"
"What about you?"
Weiwei shook her head thoughtfully. "Let me think about it."
She buried her face in his chest and quietly turned over her thoughts as Qi cradled her tenderly.
