I was practically sleepwalking by the time he stopped, his arm shifting to support more of my weight as he scanned the horizon. I could see him squinting, his face drawn tight with concentration, but I couldn't make out what he was looking for.
"There's got to be something," he muttered under his breath, more to himself than to me.
I stayed quiet, my head resting against his shoulder as I let him think. My legs were trembling, barely able to hold me up anymore, and the burning heat inside me felt like it was melting my bones. I closed my eyes for a moment, just to block out the world, but Alex's voice snapped me back to reality.
"Don't pass out on me, Maya," he said sharply, his tone cutting through the fog in my head.
I opened my eyes again, blinking up at him. He was staring straight ahead, his jaw clenched tight. "We're stopping here," he announced after a moment, guiding me toward a crumbling wall that offered a bit of cover.
