Chapter 2 - The path of discovery

_Chapter Two: The Journey to Ravenswood_

Abigail stepped off the train and onto the worn platform of Ravenswood Station. The town's eerie silence enveloped her, a stark contrast to the city's constant bustle. She shivered, despite the warmth of the summer evening.

As she collected her luggage, Abigail noticed a faded sign: "Welcome to Ravenswood – Est. 1850." The town's history seemed to weigh heavily on its residents.

A taxi idled outside the station, its driver watching Abigail with an unnerving intensity.

"Ravenswood Manor, please," Abigail said, trying to sound confident.

The driver nodded, his eyes lingering on her before focusing on the road.

During the ride, Abigail noticed the town's decaying mansions, their grandeur overshadowed by neglect. The taxi turned onto a winding driveway, leading to Ravenswood Manor.

Abigail's heart quickened as the manor came into view. Its imposing facade loomed before her, shrouded in shadows.

"Here we are," the driver said, his voice low.

Abigail paid the fare and stepped out, her eyes locked on the manor.

_Lawyer Jenkins awaited her in the foyer, his expression somber._

"Welcome, Abigail. I'm glad you arrived safely."

"Thank you," Abigail replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

As Jenkins led her to the study, Abigail sensed a presence watching her from the shadows.

"This was your great-aunt's favorite room," Jenkins said, gesturing to the book-lined walls.

Abigail's gaze settled on a portrait above the fireplace – Lucinda Welles, her eyes seeming to hold secrets.

"What happened to my great-aunt?" Abigail asked, her curiosity growing.

Jenkins hesitated before speaking.

"Lucinda passed away under mysterious circumstances. The townspeople are wary of discussing it."

Abigail's determination surged.

"I want to know the truth," she said, her voice firm.

Jenkins nodded.

"I'll provide you with the necessary documents. But be warned, Abigail – Ravenswood holds secrets it doesn't willingly share."
