Chapter 34 - Kai’s Conundrum

The Advanced Elemental Class hall was bathed in the soft golden light of the evening sun, echoing with murmurs of anticipation. This prestigious class was instructed by the enigmatic Principal Liora. As she entered the room, an aura of authority and grace enveloped her. Despite her mature age, her beauty was timeless. Her enchanting eyes held an ageless charm, captivating all who met her gaze. Her impeccable white hair, in stark contrast to her youthful complexion, cascaded down her back like a moonlit river.

Today was the day when fourth-year students presented their experiments, and a student named Kai was the first to go. After a short nod from the principal, he took a moment to adjust his notes before he began, knowing well the weight his presentation carried in his final year evaluation.

"Principal Liora, esteemed classmates," Kai began, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves. "I've been working on an experiment that, I believe, might provide evidence supporting the theorized existence of the 'life' element."

Kai gestured towards the plants on his table. "I've taken the most similar samples of this plant species, ensuring they've had identical amounts of sunlight, water, and nutrients. I then devised a spell combining the properties of earth and water, naming it 'Amplor'. This spell, in theory, should elicit a consistent reaction from organisms if no other element is at play."

As the audience watched, Kai demonstrated the Amplor spell on each plant. Some leaves shimmered brightly, some seemed to droop, while others curled.

Beside Lynna, Malay leaned forward, intrigued. She nudged him, whispering, "If he's basing his conclusions on varied reactions of the same species of plant to his combined spell, there could be multiple reasons for the differences."

Malay nodded subtly, indicating he shared her skepticism.

Kai continued, "Given that all other factors were controlled, the varied reactions should not be possible if only the properties of earth and water were involved. Could these discrepancies then be influenced by the difference of 'life' element present in each plants?"

A ripple of murmurs coursed through the class, with some students nodding thoughtfully while others exchanged skeptical glances.

All eyes turned to Principal Liora as she rose, the air in the room growing taut.

"Kai," she began, her voice, melodious yet firm, resonated in the class hall, "the exploration of magic's complexities is commendable, especially venturing into theories such as the life element. However, even if these plants are of the same species, they've had unique lifetimes. Minute factors—be it the sunlight they've absorbed, the water they've received, or the soil they're rooted in—can impact their responses."

She paced gracefully, her words commanding everyone's attention. "Remember in our previous sessions, we categorized 'life' as an unknown element because of our inability to directly manipulate it. The elusive nature of unknown elements, like life, time and luck, was discussed. These are intricate facets of our world, and pinpointing their existence or influence is no easy task."

Principal Liora continued, her gaze sweeping over the students as she paused momentarily, giving weight to her words. "The 'life' element, as we have theorized, is one of the most enigmatic and omnipresent forces. While we identify it more predominantly in living beings, we suppose it's subtly interwoven in everything around us. A tree, a blade of grass, even the very stone beneath our feet might carry an imprint of 'life'."

She walked to a table where a potted plant sat. With a gentle touch, she continued, "Just like the heartbeats within us, the 'life' element is like a pulse. It is believed to be the force that allows a seed to sprout, an animal to grow, and a thought to take root in the mind. It's not merely about existence but about growth, adaptation, and evolution."

A murmur of awe swept through the class. Students exchanged glances, some scribbling down notes feverishly, while others simply sat, captivated by the eloquence of their principal.

Liora's eyes took on a distant look, as if recalling ancient wisdom. "Unlike fire, which we can ignite, or earth which we can mold, 'life' is not something we control. Some ancient texts even suggest that 'life' is the primordial essence we should respect and revere."

Walking back to the center of the room, she emphasized, "Unknown elements like 'life', 'time', and 'luck', are immensely powerful. Their influence is vast, yet their touch is gentle, almost imperceptible. Trying to harness them is like attempting to hold the divine with your bare hands. Their ethereal nature makes them both fascinating and frustrating subjects of study."

Lynna whispered to Malay, her voice hesitant, "You know... this class? I think it's one of my favorites..."

Principal Liora gave her verdict, "For your initiative and the rigor of your methodology, I'd grant this experiment a 54 out of 100. Remember, in the world of magic, the journey to discovery is often as enlightening as the discovery itself."

Kai nodded respectfully, appreciating the wisdom in Liora's feedback. As he made his way back to his seat, the class remained engrossed, contemplating Principal Liora's strict but fair grading on a student that successfully devised a bi-elemental spell for his experiment.
