Chapter 35 - Guidance

In the bustling heart of the Academy of Magic, an unusual scene unfolded in one of its secluded classes. Lynna, with her striking features, was being carried princess-style by a taller, somewhat brooding student. His impassive expression was a sharp contrast to her blushing bemusement. Nearby, two other students, one vibrant and petite, the other more reserved, were fervently chanting a complex magical formula. The air around them crackled with an electric mix of anticipation and apprehension. Observing from a short distance, an esteemed figure, easily identifiable as Principal Liora by her distinguished presence, watched the scene unfold. Her expression was one of approval, her head nodding slightly as if acknowledging the bizarre yet intriguing spectacle.

How did this happen? Lynna wondered, trying not to let her embarrassment surpass her modesty.

She was now studying in a personal class with Principal Liora, an opportunity that had seemed unfathomable when she first set foot in the academy. It all started when she and Malay decided to join a rather unconventional club within the academy. This club, known as "Under Discoveries," was a haven for those who sought to explore the more enigmatic and uncharted aspects of magic. At least that was what the advertisement of the club said.

In total, there were five members in the club. Besides Lynna and Malay who recently joined, there was Vance—a student one year her senior. Vance was ranked 3rd and was in his last year. He had a reputation for lacking potential but being a diligent worker, the antithesis of Lynna, who was often labeled a 'natural genius.' He was a bit dark and gloomy, but he possessed a natural charm, especially when discussing magical theories. His ability to listen intently and provide insightful feedback was invaluable during their club meetings. While carrying Lynna, Vance seemed unusually agitated. The usually calm and composed Vance showed a rare flicker of frustration as he turned to Nae. "How is this supposed to demonstrate anything?" he questioned, his voice tinged with skepticism.

Nae, with her blonde ponytail bouncing as she gestured, responded with her usual vivacity. "Remember, Vance, we're testing if emotions and feelings can influence life elements, and indirectly other elements around them." Her bright, wide eyes sparkled with excitement at the discussion.

Principal Liora, observing the interaction, interjected with a thoughtful nod. "Experiments and experiences are indeed valuable for growth. However, Vance, your impassive demeanor, though usually an asset, could have lent more to this experiment if you had shown a bit of attraction towards Lynna." Her voice carried a mix of humor and seriousness, hinting at the deeper layers of their magical exploration.

Vance gently let Lynna down to the ground, his movements precise and measured. Lynna, now blushing even more deeply, wished she could disappear entirely, overwhelmed by the Principal's remark and the attention it drew.

Nae, standing beside Vance, radiated a warmth that contrasted his more reserved nature. She was short and exuberant, her presence in the group like a burst of sunlight through clouds. Her affinity for fire magic was as apparent in her spellwork as in her personality – fiery, passionate, and unpredictable. Lynna often looked at Nae and saw the little sister she would have liked to have. Her theories, while sometimes outlandish, brought a fresh perspective to their discussions, challenging and invigorating their club.

But what truly set this club apart was its mentor—Principal Liora herself. Her involvement gave the club a sense of prestige and purpose. At least, once again, that was what Lynna had initially thought. Over time, the Principal took her under her wing, doting on her like a long-lost daughter. Lynna often wondered about the reasons behind this special attention. It had its advantages though; their discussions were intellectually stimulating, and they both seemed to derive genuine enjoyment from their research collaborations. Even the bizarre experiment they had just conducted, which seemed unconventional at first, was fun in its own unique way.

As they wrapped up the activity, Lynna turned to Malay with curiosity sparking in her eyes. "What was that exactly?" she asked, gesturing to the scene they had just been a part of. "Your spell using air elements... it seemed a bit off. Do you think Nae's theory might have some credibility?"

Malay answered thoughtfully, a faint smile touching his lips. "Well, to be honest, no. I messed up a bit during the chant. Got a bit distracted," he admitted.

Lynna tilted her head, her interest piqued. "Distracted? By what?" she inquired, her tone light yet inquisitive.

Malay hesitated, then with a half-smile, he replied, "I guess I was just a bit jealous."

Lynna blinked, a look of genuine surprise on her face. "Jealous? Of who, exactly?" she asked, her voice tinged with innocent unawareness. Her mind, always so focused on the intricacies of magic and the thrill of discovery, often missed the subtler cues of personal dynamics around her. She didn't even realize the kind of question she just asked.

But Lynna's question hung in the air, before she could receive an answer, the sound of Liora's voice focused their attention.

"Vance, how is your project coming along?" Liora inquired, her voice carrying a mix of authority and genuine interest. She leaned back against a stone bench, her eyes observing him keenly.

"I've made significant progress, Principal," Vance replied, his voice steady and confident. "I believe the presentation will not only be informative but quite to your liking. I've been preparing meticulously for this."

Liora's lips curved into a smile, pleased with his response. "You've shown remarkable progress during your five years here. With continued dedication, you may well be within reach of the first rank before graduation." She then continued, "I have very high expectations, Vance. You refused to share any details with the club. I hope you're prepared for the consequences if it's not up to everyone's expectations."

Vance nodded, a flash of excitement briefly crossing his usually stoic expression. "Thank you, Principal. I wouldn't want to throw some shame on this quite eminent club," he said, his tone laced with a hint of irony. "I'm confident that my project will not only meet but exceed your expectations." His gaze then shifted toward the group, a subtle sense of pride evident in his posture. "This club has been an invaluable platform for me to push the boundaries of my research, and I intend to showcase just that."
