Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Meeting a new friend

"Are you sulking?"

She asked with a soft smile on her face,

"No, I'm not"

He said and she chuckled softly, finding him cute this way, she gave him a pat on the back as they made their way to the reception desk, she looked around trying the get a good idea of the size of the building

The guild was incredibly large, with a whole 3 floors, each with its separate rooms, she figured, had their own functions. There was an interior balcony where a secondary quest board was located.

As she was looking around she found a large sign posted on the wall above the reception area of the guild; she read the title and immediately told Eon.

"look there's a list of the guild rules"

She informed and he lazily looked up; he didn't particularly care about the rules, specifically because he barely read the ones Sam had given him the chance to read, but he supposed there was a merit to skim through it.

Adventurer's Guild rules

Note: As an adventurer, you are advised to follow these rules regardless of where you are. Carrying a guild card means you are beholden to these rules, although the rules may vary depending on the country.

Don't fight in the guild.

Don't attack unless attacked first.

Always report monster-related incidents to the guild. DO NOT keep potentially dangerous information to yourself.

Don't kill other adventurers, should one of your comrades be killed by another adventurer, delegate the matter to the guild. We will handle it and ensure justice is served.

Receptionists and guild staff are to be respected, don't bother them during work hours and their breaks.

Take quests directly; do not send a proxy or an underling to take quests on your behalf; if you do allow someone to take quests on your behalf, the guild will take a 35% cut of the reward.

Should you fail to complete a quest, the guild will deduct 10% off your next quest that you complete

Should you fail to complete 3 quests of the same rank, your rank will be demoted.

You are expected to partake in criminal bounty hunting as a secondary service to the country; should you fail to do this every 6 months, your guild card will be revoked.

Bribing the quest observer is discouraged and may lead to your guild card being permanently revoked, this also goes for the adventurer's observer during the observation period.

Should you be caught partaking in any criminal activity your guild card will be permanently revoked.

The guild will handle all quests. DO NOT seek quests by yourself or threaten clients to hand you quests personally; ONLY the guild master is allowed to hand out personalised quests.

All available adventures are expected to partake in an emergency quest or special quests should one require a large number of people.

The guild will not be held responsible for any actions done outside the guild building. Please be responsible adventurers outside the guild

Note: in the event that you are struggling to make money or are in debt, the guild will offer loans; as repayment, you are required to complete a free quest in which you get no rewards.

"That certainly makes things a lot easier"

Eon stated, and Reniris concurred; however, as they made their way towards the reception desk, their attention was snatched by an interaction of an adventurer with one of the receptions.

"Come on, please, let me take the quest again, I need to rank up!!"

A tall man wearing blue mage-like robes begged the receptionist, his form pushed forward against the glass separating him from the guild staff.

"I apologise, sir Luke, I can't give you the quest again. This was your first failure to complete it, and it's required that you at least wait a month before you try again."

The receptionist stoically replied, her posture and form completely unphased; despite the man pushing against the glass that separated her from him, she was certain he could never break through it.

"Come on, just this once, I need to rank up because I need the money, please do this for me"

The man pathetically pleaded; he loathed to do so, but he had no other choice, so he had to lower himself. Pride was only worth a damn when you had something to be proud of and unfortunately, Luke had little to be proud of or at least he had nothing to back it up.

"If you need money, the guild offers loans and depending on your track record as an adventurer you can borrow a large enough sum to solve your problems"

"Ugh! Forget it, give me the most rewarding BBB rank quest you can find, at least one with a reward of about 3000 ixe"

Luke quickly dismissed the woman's pitch for taking a loan from the guild, he definitely wasn't in a situation where he could afford to do free quests afterwards.

The receptionist quickly opened the drawer and filed through some of the quest forms before pulling out a suitable quest.

"This one offers 4000ixe for the intact body of a giant naked rat. The specification says, you cannot it in half but you can damage it with blunt force attacks or cause internal injuries"

She said typically, an adventurer can choose their quest at the quest boards, but it's possible to request one directly from the reception, although one is required to pay a 5ixe fee since it's the reception doing the work of picking the quest for you.

The man took out the 5ix coin, slammed it over the counter and rudely snatched the quest form away; he turned and walked away, grumbling about the guild being a bunch of money grubbers.

He walked hastily, pushing the person who blocked his way, which just happened to happen to be Reniris.

"Out of my way"

He said as he pushed her out of his way. However, he suddenly found himself lurching backwards as his hand was suddenly pulled back.

"Excuse yourself, my guy. There are people here other than you"

Eon said a displeased frown on their face, and his grip on the man's wrist was firm. Luke, not liking the tone of the man that suddenly grabbed him, he frowned and tried to pull his hand off his grip.

"Let go of me!"

"Not until you acknowledge, that you just rudely pushed my friend, this isn't your house"

Eon matched the man's frown. To him, the matter should be simple, a simple "my bad" would suffice but the man seemed to be against such a simple solution

"I don't have time for this stupid nonsense, let go of me! You fucking idiot!"

"The fuck!!"

Eon exclaimed both offended and surprised by the man doubling down and just refusing to apologise.

"You think you're above apologising for being rude?"

He asked and Luke suddenly turned his body to face Eon and grabbed his shirt by the collar and pulled on it stretching it out, something the Dragonoid did not appreciate.

"Listen you fucking–"

"You rip my shirt, you're dead!!"

Eon shouted, his anger quickly rising, he wasn't about to let this bozo ruin his clothing.

"I don't give a damn about your shirt!!"

This time it was Eon who grabbed the man by the scruff of his robes and stared at the man with righteous anger.

"The fuck do you think you are you bozo! You a noble or something? Apologise for your rudeness and there'll be no problem!"

The situation quickly escalated, and everyone nearby stared in silence; since the two men hadn't come to blows yet, it was fine to watch for now, but there were already a few adventurers ready to intervene.

Reniris on the other hand, let out a sigh, although she did like the fact he was so ready to defend her.

"Alright, it's fine, Eon, there's no need to escalate the situation, I'd rather not repeat what happened last time"

She said, and the Dragonoid heaved a sigh and pushed the man away before adjusting his shirt; Luke, on the other hand, simply huffed, turned and walked away.

"We should try not to invite trouble when we can, Eon"

"So you were just going to let that guy just get away with being rude?"

"Yes, him pushing me is irrelevant, plus it's clear he had other things on his mind so I can understand, plus I didn't ask you to be offended on my behalf"

"Yeah, no. Just because some guy is having a bad day does not mean he gets to push around people, especially not my friends. Even if you didn't ask, I will be offended on your behalf"

He explained, and Reniris remained silent; it seemed this was something they'd disagree on, so she decided to let it go.

Eon looked at her and sighed. She did tell him that he should let her handle her conflicts the best way she possibly could, and he threw those words back at her, too.

"Fine, you're right I'm sorry, I'll let you handle your business however you see fit"

Reniris can take care of herself when push comes to shove, so his concern is not needed, but regardless, if she can take care of herself, one can't help but want to protect the person one cares about.

'I'll try not to impose'

He thought.

"Thank you but I do appreciate your concern and I don't think you defending me is a bad thing, just don't get so worked up when I'm not worked up about it"

She said, giving him another pat on the shoulder as they finally focused their attention on the receptionist who silently let them finish their conversation.

"We'd like to take a quest please"

Reniris politely asked.
