Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

As I walked through the bustling jungle at the base of the mountain, I realized that climbing this mountain would take much longer than I first guessed. The peak was about 6000 meters from my location.

I have been walking up this mountain for about a day and last night was not what I expected, to say the least. I vow to never go without a plan again! I was so cold I almost froze to death.

As I walked, I thought about what happened the past day and I subconsciously played with the ring on my finger. It made me feel calm when I touched it. When I realized what I was doing, I stopped to look at the ring and focused deep inside myself hoping that something would reveal itself to me.

Sadly, nothing happened, but I felt something like a barrier breaking between my soul and the mystery energy. I knew it would need more time before another barrier could break but it felt as though I was making progress.

"I need food," I said as my belly rumbled loudly.

I settled in the canopy of a tall tree after some failed climbing attempts. As I waited, I finally had time to process my mother's death. I knew I shouldn't, but I couldn't stop crying as soon as I thought about it. I could try to be mature all I wanted, but in reality, I was nothing but an orphan bottling up his feelings to deal with them later, when I thought I could finally handle them.

When I finally stopped crying, I heard a rustle in the brush 10 feet below me. It was a large animal but I couldn't make out exactly what it was.

I waited, waited, and finally! The creature poked out its magnificent head as if it knew it was the ruler of this forest. I was unsure if I should attempt to hunt it, but I remembered the pain from last night and resolved myself to kill this great creature.

I steeled myself and hopped from the tree with great force. The beast heard me as soon as my weight shifted and turned to run but I fell on it before it could.

The enemy was a saber-toothed lion. Its mane was golden like the sun beating down through the scattered tree leaves. Its teeth sharp as the best dagger. It threw me off its large back, it was at eye level with me which is rare since I am about 5'6(or 170cm).

Its eyes seemed to hold a force I couldn't pin down in my mind. They were black as the night without stars. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my blood as it charged at me, teeth bared. I loved the feeling it gave me even though I was scared, it felt like I was born to fight.

I charged at it and we crashed into each other, its claws were digging deep into my arms as I screamed in pain. Its teeth missed my face by barely an inch, I let go of its left arm, grabbed its tusk, and tried to snap it off.

It swung its left paw into my ribs and the impact blew out my breath, I took a gamble and let go of everything but the tusk and let my body be carried by the blow, and with the force of the strike I was thrown into the tree I jumped from, holding its left tusk in my right hand.

I had a stupid grin on my face. I knew I had done a lot of damage to the beast. I saw the change to attack; and jumped on its head stabbing its eye. The tusk pierced the eye and its brain killing it instantly.

I stumbled towards the tree taking a breath to rest. I'd deal with the body later.
