"Couldn't sleep," Alex said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Me neither," I admitted.
He hesitated before stepping inside, his presence filling the small room. "Emma… I know you don't trust me. And I can't blame you for that. But I need you to know that I'll do whatever it takes to keep you and your mother safe. No matter what."
My throat tightened as I stared at him, the sincerity in his eyes shaking my resolve. I wanted to believe him. But can I?
"Goodnight, Alex," I said softly, turning away.
As he left the room, closing the door quietly behind him, I closed my eyes, forcing myself to find sleep. But the battle in my heart raged on, leaving me more conflicted than ever.
