Chapter 28 - Chapter 13: Shadows in the Depths

As night fell over the Hidden Village, the quiet was unsettling. The moon barely pierced the thick, dark clouds hovering over the land, casting only faint silver streaks over the fortified walls. Ethan stood at the village gate, eyes narrowed, searching the distant woods. His muscles were taut, his senses alert. Something was out there, lurking in the darkness.

Beside him, Kaela adjusted the grip on her sword, her gaze also fixed on the tree line. "You feel it too, don't you?"

Ethan nodded. "Yeah. It's like the air's thick with it. They're coming."

The village had barely recovered from the last attack, but this time, there was no warning. No fleeing survivors stumbling through the gates. No terrified screams echoing in the distance. The shadows moved in silence, unseen but felt. Ethan's pulse quickened as he watched the treeline. For hours, nothing stirred. But he knew better than to believe it was over.

"They're waiting for something," Kaela muttered. "A signal. A command. It's not like last time."

"That makes it worse," Ethan said, gripping his sword tighter. "They're learning. Adapting."

The eerie silence stretched on, broken only by the occasional wind whispering through the trees. The village, still battered from the first siege, was quiet—too quiet. The villagers had already been moved to safety, huddled together in the central square, under heavy guard. Every able-bodied fighter was on the walls, armed and ready, but the tension was unbearable.

Suddenly, Ethan's wristband flashed with a faint light, the familiar glowing screen appearing before him. He glanced down, surprised by the unexpected activation of the system.

Ethan's heart pounded in his chest. A shadow commander? That explained the sense of foreboding. This wasn't just another attack—it was a calculated assault.

"Did you get that?" Ethan asked, showing Kaela the glowing display.

She frowned. "A quest? But it didn't show up for me." Her eyes darkened as she processed the message. "A shadow commander? This isn't good."

Ethan didn't waste time. He sent a quick message to the squad captains scattered along the walls, warning them about the possibility of a higher-level threat. As they prepared for the coming assault, the clouds above thickened, snuffing out the last traces of moonlight.

And then, from the treeline, they emerged.

At first, it was a trickle—just a few shadows slipping from the woods, blending almost perfectly with the darkness. Then the trickle became a flood. The shadows multiplied, crawling out of the trees in silence, their black, twisting forms writhing like a living nightmare.

"Here they come!" Kaela shouted, her voice slicing through the stillness.

The archers along the walls fired, arrows slicing through the air, many striking their marks. But the shadows were relentless, surging forward, faster and faster, slamming against the barricades with a terrifying force.

Ethan leapt into action. His blade cut through the darkness as he joined the front line, swinging with precision, each strike illuminated briefly by the flashes of his glowing wristband. Kaela fought beside him, her sword a blur of light as she sliced through the shadows with deadly efficiency.

But something was wrong.

As they battled the swarming shadows, Ethan felt a new presence—a darkness heavier than the others, lurking just out of sight. He turned sharply, searching the edge of the battlefield, and then he saw it. Standing at the edge of the woods, watching the chaos unfold, was the shadow commander.

It was enormous, towering over the battlefield like a living mountain. Its body was a mass of black, swirling mist, but its eyes—those burning red eyes—pierced the darkness like twin embers in the night.

"That's it," Ethan muttered. "The shadow commander."

Kaela followed his gaze and her face hardened. "I'll take it down."

"No!" Ethan grabbed her arm before she could rush off. "We do this together."

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded, her determination matching his.

They moved quickly, cutting their way through the sea of shadows as they pushed toward the commander. The creature stood still, watching them approach, as though it was calculating its next move. When they were within striking distance, the shadow commander finally stirred.

With a roar that shook the very ground beneath their feet, it surged forward, its massive arm slamming down toward them like a hammer. Ethan and Kaela dove out of the way just in time, the impact sending a shockwave through the battlefield, scattering shadows and debris in every direction.

Ethan scrambled to his feet, barely managing to dodge another strike. "We can't take it head-on!" he shouted over the chaos.

"We need to hit its weak points," Kaela called back, her eyes scanning the massive figure. "Aim for the eyes!"

Ethan nodded, steeling himself as he activated a new ability from his skill tree: Critical Strike. His sword glowed with a faint blue light as he charged forward, aiming for the creature's glowing red eyes. Kaela mirrored his movement, and together, they struck.

The creature howled in pain as Ethan's blade found its mark, slicing through the shadowy mass with precision. Kaela followed up with a devastating blow to its other eye, the combined attacks throwing the commander off balance. It staggered, its form flickering as if it was struggling to maintain its shape.

"We've got it!" Ethan shouted, moving in for the final blow.

But just as they prepared to strike again, the creature let out a deafening roar, its body exploding in a burst of dark energy. Ethan and Kaela were thrown back, crashing into the barricades as the remaining shadows scattered.

For a moment, the battlefield was eerily still. The shadow commander was gone, its body dissipated into the night. But the cost had been high—the village walls were in ruins, and many of the defenders lay wounded.

Ethan dragged himself to his feet, his chest heaving as he surveyed the damage. "We did it," he muttered, though it felt like a hollow victory.

Kaela limped over, her face grim. "This isn't over," she said quietly, glancing at the distant horizon. "This was just the beginning."

Ethan clenched his fists, his gaze hardening. The shadow commander had been defeated, but the threat was far from gone. And deep down, he knew the shadows would return. Stronger. Smarter.

They had survived the night, but the real battle was still ahead.
