Chapter 29 - Chapter 14: The Calm Before the Storm

The village was a shell of what it once was. The walls, once sturdy and unyielding, were now battered, with gaping holes where the shadows had torn through. The air hung heavy with the scent of smoldering wood and the distant murmur of villagers tending to the wounded. Ethan walked through the aftermath, his steps slow and deliberate, the weight of the battle still settling on his shoulders.

After defeating the shadow commander, the village had slipped into a tense silence. There was no celebration, no feeling of triumph. Everyone knew this was a temporary reprieve—merely a pause before the next wave of attacks. Ethan could feel it in his bones. The darkness was growing stronger, and they were running out of time.

Kaela joined him, her eyes scanning the damage. "It's not enough. The next time they come, we won't survive. Not like this."

Ethan nodded, his mind racing. "We need to prepare. Reinforce the defenses, gather more fighters, and..." He paused, staring down at the wristband on his arm. The glow was faint now, but he could still feel the power it held. "I need to level up. Fast."

Kaela looked at him, her brow furrowed. "You've been relying on that thing more and more."

"It's the only way we stand a chance. If I can get stronger, if I can unlock more abilities..." He trailed off, his gaze distant. "It's like a game, but the stakes are real. I can't afford to fall behind."

"Don't lose yourself in it," Kaela warned. "We're not just fighting to survive—we're fighting for the people here, for everything they've built."

Ethan's mind was already moving ahead, calculating what he needed to do. His experience points from the shadow commander had been substantial, pushing him closer to his next level. He quickly pulled up the system's interface, scrolling through his available skill trees.

Level Up Available:

Level 12 → Level 13

Skill Points Available: 6

Unlocked Abilities: Shadow Strike, Enhanced Reflexes, Armor of Light

The choice was difficult. Each skill felt vital, especially with what lay ahead, but Ethan knew he had to prioritize. He needed something that would give him an edge, something that could shift the tide in their favor.

After a few moments, he chose Armor of Light—a defensive ability that would create a barrier around him, absorbing incoming damage for a limited time. He allocated three points into the skill, feeling a rush of energy as the power settled into him. The remaining points went toward Enhanced Reflexes, boosting his agility and reaction speed.

"Alright," he said, closing the interface. "I'm ready."

Kaela raised an eyebrow. "That's it? Just like that?"

Ethan nodded, a quiet determination in his eyes. "This is how we win. I can feel it."

Suddenly, a shout broke through the village square. One of the scouts came rushing in from the forest, out of breath and wild-eyed. "They're coming!" he gasped, leaning against the wall for support.

Ethan's heart sank. "Already?"

The scout nodded frantically. "They're moving faster than we expected. We don't have much time."

Kaela cursed under her breath, turning to the makeshift command post where the remaining village leaders were gathered. "We need to get ready. Now."

As the scout's words sank in, Ethan could feel the weight of the village's collective fear pressing down on him. This wasn't like the previous battles. Something was different. The shadows were more organized, more deliberate. It wasn't just mindless creatures attacking anymore—there was a strategy behind it.

Ethan hurried to the village walls, where the fighters were already scrambling to reinforce what little they had left. He could see the exhaustion on their faces, the weariness in their movements. They had barely survived the last attack, and now, they were about to face another onslaught.

"We'll never hold them off like this," Kaela muttered, joining him on the wall. "We're too spread out. The defenses are too weak."

Ethan clenched his fists. "We have no choice. We stand and fight."

Kaela gave him a hard look. "We need a miracle, Ethan. Do you have one in that system of yours?"

He opened the interface again, scanning his abilities. There had to be something—some way to buy them more time, some advantage they hadn't thought of. And then, he saw it.

New Quest Unlocked: The Light of Salvation

"The shadows gather for their final strike on the village. Stand your ground, protect the survivors, and discover the hidden power within. A mysterious artifact lies beneath the village—find it before it's too late."

Rewards: 2000 EXP, +4 Skill Points, Artifact Unlocked: Beacon of the Dawn

Ethan's eyes widened. An artifact? He had no idea what it was or where to find it, but it might be their only hope. He turned to Kaela. "There's something hidden here. Beneath the village. An artifact."

Her eyes narrowed. "And how do you know that?"

"The system," he said quickly. "It's guiding me."

Kaela didn't argue. "Then we'd better find it, fast."

The two of them raced through the village, heading toward the central square. If there was something hidden beneath the village, it had to be in the oldest part of the settlement, where the foundation stones had been laid centuries ago.

As they reached the square, they found the entrance to an ancient cellar, long forgotten by most of the villagers. The door was heavy, covered in moss and rust, but with a bit of effort, they managed to pry it open.

The darkness inside was suffocating, the air thick with age and decay. But Ethan could feel it—a faint pulse, a whisper of power deep within the earth. They descended into the cellar, their torches barely illuminating the narrow, winding tunnel.

And then, at the end of the tunnel, they saw it.

A pedestal, ancient and worn, stood in the center of the chamber. Upon it rested a small, glowing orb, pulsating with a soft, golden light.

Ethan stepped forward, his heart racing. "The Beacon of the Dawn."

Kaela watched as he reached out, his hand trembling as it hovered over the artifact. "Are you sure about this?"

Ethan nodded, his fingers closing around the orb. The moment he touched it, a surge of energy shot through him, filling him with warmth and light. The darkness that had clung to him since the first shadow attack seemed to melt away, replaced by a sense of hope.

"Let's go," Ethan said, his voice filled with renewed determination. "We're not done yet."

The final battle was upon them.
