The next morning, as the sun slowly rose from the east, its rays gently illuminated the room, waking the young man. The outdoor life he had been leading for some time had adjusted his biological clock to an extremely efficient routine.
At the foot of the bed, remnants of a magic core indicated that the youth had stayed up all night. However, despite this, a vibrant energy radiated from him.
Sitting up in a meditative posture on the bed, Mo Yu formed a series of hand seals, closing his eyes once more. The early morning hours were the best time for cultivating Dou Qi, and last night, he had used the Thunder Soul to devour the last of the three second-tier magic cores he had brought from Wu Tan City. Though the effects weren't as significant as before, his Dou Qi still made notable progress.
As his breathing steadied, the space around him began to ripple softly, like water disturbed by a breeze. Wisps of Dou Qi seeped out from the surroundings, absorbed by his body like a sponge. The Dou Qi traveled through several predetermined meridians, refining itself before being stored in the small cyclone within him.
Mo Yu continued his cultivation for about an hour. When the sunlight finally brightened the room completely, he gradually finished, dispersing the hand seals. A slightly muddled breath was released from his mouth.
Opening his eyes, a faint silver glow flickered across his black pupils before vanishing deep within them.
"The second-tier magic cores are indeed much less effective now. But still, with another half a month of cultivation, I should be able to reach the eight-star Dou Zhe level," Mo Yu murmured as he stretched, listening to the cracking sounds of his joints.
"Today's the day I enter the Magic Beast Mountain Range," a smile crept onto his face as he seemed to recall something important.
After a quick wash, Mo Yu packed his belongings, preparing for the trek ahead. Though he appeared calm, he remained cautious. The Magic Beast Mountain Range was a dangerous place where magical beasts roamed freely, and a single person venturing into such a treacherous area was often the target of attacks. Most mercenaries entered in groups to increase their chances of survival.
At his current strength, Mo Yu could at most deal with an ordinary second-tier magical beast, which made him wary of the dangers ahead.
By the town's gate, many mercenaries had already gathered, calling out to solo mercenaries in hopes of forming temporary groups.
From what Mo Yu knew, mercenaries weren't common in the Dou Qi Continent, except near certain magical beast-infested areas. In Central Plains the magical beasts were so powerful—some even forming superfamilies—that mercenaries had no place there.
Mercenaries fell into three categories: strictly organized mercenary groups, temporarily formed teams, and solo adventurers.
The ones calling out at the town's gate belonged to the second category.
Standing in a corner, Mo Yu wasn't in a hurry to join a group. Joining a mercenary team was a good option for someone unfamiliar with the area, but it seemed he was waiting for something.
Sure enough, a loud shout soon reached his ears, causing a smile to form on his lips.
"The Wan Yao Pavilion is heading into the Magic Beast Mountain Range to gather herbs, and Xiao Yixian (Little Fairy Doctor) will be accompanying us! We only have fifty spots, and participants must be at least a two-star Dou Zhe! Hurry up!"
The loud call caused a brief silence at the bustling town gate. Moments later, mercenaries who met the requirements rushed toward the middle-aged man in the Wan Yao Pavilion uniform.
Mo Yu smiled slightly. Knowing the storyline well, he was aware of the encounter between Xiao Yan and Xiao Yixian.
There was no need for him to rush—everything would go according to plan. As for Xiao Yixian, Mo Yu wasn't particularly interested in her as a romantic partner. He didn't have a peculiar obsession with collecting the world's beauties.
However, the Woeful Poison Body was something that intrigued him. Not only did he possess a special constitution himself, but Xiao Yixian's toxic abilities could potentially be highly beneficial to him.
As the mercenaries fought over the limited spots, Mo Yu discreetly summoned the Vermilion Burning Sky Thunder, sending a small current of electricity into the crowd. The mercenaries were momentarily paralyzed, allowing Mo Yu to dart to the front of the line.
"There's only one spot left!" the middle-aged man exclaimed, holding up a sheepskin scroll with a smile.
"Me!" Mo Yu's voice rang out from the front.
"Huh?" The middle-aged man looked at the handsome young man in surprise before smiling, "Young man, we require at least a two-star Dou Zhe."
"Where did this kid come from? Not even grown yet, and already running around acting tough!"
"Ugh, why do my arms feel numb? Kid, get lost before I get angry!" one of the mercenaries grumbled, still recovering from the paralysis.
Hearing this, Mo Yu's brow furrowed, and silver Dou Qi flared around him. Without hesitation, he struck the loudest mercenary with a palm imbued with thunder.
Smack!
A loud collision rang out, and the offending mercenary was sent flying over ten meters, bleeding profusely, his life hanging by a thread.
"Is this enough?" Mo Yu asked coldly, clapping his hands as he looked around.
"More than enough!" The middle-aged man quickly praised, "That guy's name is Mo Yan. He recently broke through to two-star Dou Zhe, but you defeated him in one strike. You must be at least a four- or five-star Dou Zhe!"
Mo Yu didn't bother confirming or denying it, merely nodding.
Seeing this, the middle-aged man didn't ask further. The boy might be young and handsome, but his ruthless demeanor left the man feeling uneasy.
After a moment of silent awe, the man continued, "Since that's the case, you've secured the final spot. The pay is 500 gold coins for escorting our Wan Yao Pavilion's herb-gathering team. You'll receive half now and the rest upon our return."
Mo Yu nodded indifferently, clearly uninterested in the payment.
Watching the remaining mercenaries leave dejectedly, many cast wary glances at Mo Yu. It wasn't just his terrifying talent that unsettled them but also his ruthless methods.
That loud-mouthed Mo Yan had finally gotten what he deserved.
