Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A Gift

The restaurant they were heading to had been booked out in its entirety. It was located in the middle of an artificial lake, surrounded by water on all sides. The clear and murmuring water made for a breathtaking view. However, the diners present today seemed to have no interest in the scenery outside the window, for in their eyes, there were more enchanting sights to behold.

Though it was Su Heyi's first time here, she felt no unease. She sat down as requested, placed her hands on her lap, and looked serene. Her bright eyes hid a hint of curiosity and anticipation. She clearly liked this restaurant very much but did not express it.

Gu Mengbao struggled to climb onto his chair and asked the waiter for the menu, then handed it to Su Heyi, "What would you like to eat? The food here is all delicious."

Su Heyi could not read very well. Upon hearing that they were going to eat, she instinctively looked towards Gu Mo.

Even seated in a wheelchair, Gu Mo's tall stature was evident, and he clearly showed no signs of frailty. Noticing Su Heyi's gaze, a faint smile curled the corners of his lips, "Let me order then."

Su Heyi then smiled with pursed lips.

She did not have many thoughts in her mind, but she could tell that neither of these two people harbored any ill will towards her. Moreover, Su Heyi always felt an inexplicable desire to be close to them, which was strange, yet she did not understand why. She could only follow her initial instinct when making choices.

The entire restaurant staff served only the three of them, so the food was quickly brought to the table after they ordered. Su Heyi ate quietly and obediently. When she lowered her head, a section of her neck was revealed, fair and smooth, almost luminous in the sunlight streaming through the window.

As soon as she finished the last bit of food in her bowl, a napkin was offered to her.

When Su Heyi looked up, she was caught in Gu Mo's gaze. He always looked at her with an unfathomable expression. If it were a normal person, they might feel scared, thinking they had brought trouble upon themselves. But Su Heyi did not think that way. She just thought Gu Mo was good-looking, and seeing him made her feel happy.

"Thank you," Su Heyi said, not seeming foolish at all. However, she only understood some very basic things. In terms of intelligence, she might not even be as capable as the young Gu Mengbao beside her—of course, Gu Mengbao was a gifted child and should not be the standard for comparison; that would be too unfair.

After wiping her mouth, Su Heyi softly asked, "Can I be taken back now?"

Upon hearing this, Gu Mengbao felt a bit disappointed. He hadn't spent enough time with Su Heyi and was reluctant to let her leave just yet.

Gu Mo rubbed his son's head, a faint smile appearing on his usually indifferent face, "Sure, we'll take you back."

He could tell that Su Heyi only regarded them as people she didn't dislike. What he and Gu Yan wanted was far more than this.

Su Heyi was taken back to the amusement park, where she changed back into the Relaxed Bear costume, all without anyone noticing. Watching the car carrying Gu Mengbao and Gu Mo gradually drive away, she suddenly felt a sense of reluctance in her heart, as if something she loved the most was about to disappear.

Su Heyi touched her chest, lost in thought due to this strange feeling, until other children saw her and wanted to play with her, causing Su Heyi to temporarily forget about it.

Her work at the amusement park was from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After work, she would take the number 486 bus at the bus stop in front of the amusement park. It would take her 20 minutes to get home without traffic. Generally, during this process, Su Heyi would not communicate with anyone. She only needed to remain silent, and no one would notice that she was, in fact, a bit slow.

The doctor said she could lead a normal life, but she had some learning disabilities. She could remember procedural things but struggled with tasks that required understanding. Therefore, she could only do the simplest work at the amusement park. Moreover, the doctor also mentioned that her reaction time was slower than that of normal people, not physically but mentally, which led many to call her a fool.

However, Su Heyi didn't quite understand what the life of a smart person was like, so she didn't feel there was anything wrong with her own way of being.

When boarding the bus, Su Heyi used her bus card to pay, an action she had learned through rote memorization.

While taking out her card, Su Heyi noticed a small pink box in her backpack, which did not belong to her.

It was hot, and not many people were out. After she sat down on the bus, she took out the pink box, wondering about it.

Who gave it to her?

Su Heyi spent twenty minutes pondering until it finally dawned on her as she got off the bus that this must be the gift they mentioned?

Today, during the meal, Gu Mengbao had mentioned the issue of thanking Su Heyi and mentioned giving her a gift.

However, following the principal's teaching, Su Heyi firmly refused to accept gifts.

Gu Yan took advantage of her inattention and placed it in her backpack.

Su Heyi thought that gifts could be returned, and she would give it back to them tomorrow.

But... how could she find them?

This question troubled Su Heyi again, and she hadn't figured it out when she got home.

Su Heyi lived in her uncle's house, a two-bedroom apartment. Her uncle and aunt lived in the master bedroom, and their daughter, Su Youyou, who was a nurse in a hospital and a year younger than Su Heyi, lived in the other bedroom. Su Heyi occupied the small bedroom that was converted from the study, which was so small that it could only fit a bed and a desk, not even a wardrobe.

However, Su Heyi did not have many clothes to begin with. She wore the uniform provided by the amusement park at work and the same few clothes when she went home, but she had no complaints and never learned to grumble.

She returned home early, and only Su Youyou was in her bedroom. Upon hearing the noise, she ran out, saw it was Su Heyi, and was about to ignore her and go back.

But Su Youyou suddenly caught sight of the pink box in Su Heyi's hand.

"Su Heyi!" Su Youyou shouted.

Su Heyi opened her mouth blankly, "Ah?"

"Why are you always so stupid?" Su Youyou was somewhat annoyed. Of course, her annoyance with Su Heyi was because, despite being so foolish, Su Heyi was still breathtakingly beautiful, while she herself was quite average-looking. No matter how much makeup and new clothes she used to dress up, she remained an ordinary-looking person. Only Su Heyi was the most beautiful in their family. Su Youyou was very jealous of Su Heyi, but often thought of her as just a fool, which helped to balance her mind a bit.

"What is that in your hand?" Su Youyou asked, feeling that the box was out of the ordinary.

"It's... it's given to me by someone," Su Heyi said, "But I will return it tomorrow, give it back to them."

"Who are they?"

Su Heyi opened her mouth but did not answer.

She suddenly found that she did not want to answer because she did not want Su Youyou to know about those two people's existence.
