Chereads / I Wield Shadows / Chapter 43 - The Abyss Beckons

Chapter 43 - The Abyss Beckons

Kai's world was nothing but shadow. An all-encompassing void pressed against him from every direction. The cold whispers of the shadows that had once been his strength now felt suffocating, drowning out any sense of self-control. Panic surged in his chest as he struggled against the tendrils holding him down.

His mind raced. He could still hear Lysandra's voice echoing in his head, calling out to him just before everything went black. But now... now there was nothing. Just the endless, swirling dark.

Am I dead?

But no, Kai could still feel the faint pulse of his heart, weak but steady. He could sense the energy of the shadows flowing through him, though it felt different heavier, more chaotic than before. The void around him wasn't simply darkness; it was alive, restless, and hungry.

He clawed at the shadows binding him, summoning every ounce of strength he had left. The shadows resisted, but they were a part of him he had mastered them once, and he would do it again. With a growl of effort, Kai tore free, gasping as he stumbled out of the darkness and into an unfamiliar landscape.

The world around him shifted like a dream, half-formed and nightmarish. He stood in a vast, empty expanse where the ground beneath his feet felt like cold stone, but the sky above was an endless sea of swirling shadows. No light, no horizon just the weight of the abyss pressing down on him.

But he wasn't alone.

"Kai."

The voice made his blood run cold. It wasn't Lysandra's voice this time. It was deeper, ancient, and filled with a cold authority that sent a shiver down his spine. Slowly, he turned, his heart pounding in his chest.

A figure stood before him, taller than any human, cloaked in shadows so thick that it was impossible to make out any features. But the air around it crackled with power, and the shadows seemed to bow to its will, bending and twisting in its presence.

"You have ventured too deep into the Labyrinth," the figure said, its voice echoing in the void. "You are not ready for what lies beyond."

Kai narrowed his eyes, instinctively drawing the shadows to him. The power surged in response, though it felt wild and unstable. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice hoarse but defiant. "What is this place?"

The figure took a step forward, and the ground beneath them rippled like the surface of a dark lake. "This is the Abyss," it replied. "The heart of the Labyrinth, where the shadows are born and where they return. Few ever reach this depth, Kai of the shadows."

Kai's breath caught. The Abyss? He had heard whispers of it in the academy's forbidden texts, but no one had ever confirmed its existence. It was said to be the source of all shadow magic, a realm of pure darkness where even the strongest could lose themselves forever.

"What do you want from me?" Kai asked, his hands trembling as he tried to steady the shadows that now swirled erratically around him.

The figure tilted its head slightly, as if studying him. "It is not a matter of what I want, but what you seek," it said cryptically. "You have been chosen by the shadows, but you do not yet understand their true nature. You wield them as a tool, a weapon, but the shadows are more than that. They are alive."

The words sent a chill through Kai's spine. He had always known the shadows had a will of their own, but he had never truly considered them as more than a source of power. A tool to be mastered. But now, standing in this place, he could feel it the sentience in the darkness, the hunger. They were watching him, testing him.

"I can control them," Kai said, though his voice wavered with uncertainty. "I've mastered them before."

The figure chuckled, a sound that seemed to reverberate through the Abyss itself. "Control? You misunderstand. The shadows cannot be controlled, Kai. They can be guided, shaped... but never controlled. And if you continue to wield them without understanding, they will consume you."

The shadows around Kai pulsed in response to the figure's words, tightening their grip on his mind. He winced, feeling their chaotic energy threatening to overwhelm him. His body was still weak from the battle with the Shadowborn, and the strain of maintaining control over the shadows was beginning to take its toll.

"What do I have to do?" Kai asked, his voice strained. "How do I stop this?"

The figure's form seemed to shift, growing darker, more imposing. "You must learn to listen to the shadows. To understand their will. Only then can you hope to wield their true power. But beware, Kai. The path you walk is dangerous, and the Abyss is unforgiving. Many have sought its power, but few have returned."

Kai clenched his fists, determination surging through him. He had come too far to turn back now. He had faced the Shadowborn, survived the Labyrinth, and unlocked the power of the shadows. Whatever this Abyss was, whatever trials it held for him, he would face them.

"I'll do whatever it takes," Kai said through gritted teeth. "I won't let the shadows consume me."

The figure remained silent for a moment, and then it spoke, its voice colder than before. "Very well. But know this there is no turning back. Once you embrace the Abyss, you will never be the same."

Before Kai could respond, the ground beneath him gave way. He gasped as he fell, plummeting into the endless void. The wind whipped around him, the shadows swirling like a storm, pulling him deeper and deeper into the darkness. His heart raced as he tried to summon his power, but the shadows seemed to resist, slipping through his grasp like sand.

The figure's voice echoed in his mind as he fell. "Remember, Kai. The shadows are alive... and they are waiting."

With a final surge of energy, the darkness swallowed him whole.

Kai jolted awake, gasping for breath, his body drenched in sweat. He blinked rapidly, his eyes adjusting to the dim light of a stone chamber. The oppressive weight of the Abyss was gone, replaced by the familiar cold of the Labyrinth's halls. But something had changed. He could feel it in his bones, in the very air around him. The shadows were different now—stronger, more present, as if they were watching his every move.

He sat up slowly, wincing as pain shot through his limbs. His body was still battered from the encounter with the Shadowborn, but the worst of the injuries seemed to have healed. His mind, however, was a storm of questions.

Had it all been a dream? A vision? Or had he truly been in the Abyss?

Kai glanced around the chamber, and his breath caught in his throat. Standing at the entrance, bathed in the faint glow of torchlight, was Lysandra. Her eyes were wide with shock, and she looked as if she had just seen a ghost.

"Kai..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "You... you're alive."

Kai opened his mouth to respond, but before he could speak, a low, rumbling growl echoed through the chamber. The shadows around them trembled, and Kai's heart sank.

The Shadowborn had returned.
