Chereads / I Wield Shadows / Chapter 45 - The Light in the Abyss

Chapter 45 - The Light in the Abyss

Kai's world slowed to a crawl as the Shadowborn's massive form lunged at him, its claws slicing through the air with lethal precision. Every muscle in his body screamed to move, to evade the attack, but there was no room left to escape. His heart thundered in his ears, the weight of the moment pressing down on him.

But then, the shadows moved.

They weren't under his command anymore. The dark tendrils writhed of their own accord, wrapping around his body, pulling him into the cold, inky depths of shadow. The world blurred as the stone chamber and the monstrous creature faded into darkness, leaving only an oppressive, suffocating void.

Kai fell.

The sensation was disorienting, his body twisting and spinning in the weightless abyss. His thoughts scattered, his mind struggling to comprehend what had just happened. Had he died? Had the shadows consumed him entirely?

The fall seemed endless, and just when he thought he would lose himself to the void, his feet touched solid ground. He stumbled forward, gasping for air, and collapsed onto his knees. The floor beneath him was cold, smooth—nothing like the stone of the Labyrinth.

Kai looked up, his eyes adjusting to the strange dim light that filled the space. Shadows flickered everywhere, dancing along the edges of his vision, whispering in voices he couldn't quite make out. He was no longer in the Labyrinth.

This was the Abyss.

The realization hit him like a blow to the chest. He had heard tales of this place, spoken in fearful whispers by scholars and warriors alike. The Abyss was not meant to be entered, a realm where shadows reigned and time held no meaning. It was a prison for lost souls, a place where the darkness fed on despair.

"Where… am I?" Kai muttered, his voice hoarse. The question echoed, distorted by the void, but there was no answer.

He forced himself to stand, his legs shaking as he looked around. The landscape was surreal—vast, empty, and endless. The ground stretched out in all directions, a black expanse dotted with faint glimmers of light, as if stars had fallen to the floor. In the distance, towering spires of obsidian rose from the ground, their jagged edges cutting into the skyless horizon.

He was alone.

"Lysandra?" he called out, but there was no response. Panic surged through him as he remembered the Shadowborn, the deadly moment before the shadows had swallowed him. Was Lysandra still there, still fighting? Had she been consumed by the creature?

Kai clenched his fists. He couldn't stay here. He had to find a way back. But the Abyss was a place of endless darkness—how could anyone escape it?

As if in answer to his thoughts, a voice echoed through the void.

"You are not alone, Kai."

The voice was cold, ethereal, and it seemed to come from everywhere at once. Kai spun around, searching for the source, but saw nothing but shadows. His heart raced, and he instinctively reached for the shadows, trying to call on their power.

But nothing responded.

"You wield the shadows, yet you do not understand them," the voice continued. "You fear them. And so, they do not answer your call."

Kai's pulse quickened. "Who are you? Show yourself!"

There was a pause, then the shadows began to shift, coalescing into a single form. At first, it was nothing more than a dark silhouette, but as it drew closer, the figure took on a more distinct shape. It was a man, tall and clad in flowing robes of shadow, his face obscured by a hood. The only thing visible beneath the hood were his eyes—glowing with a cold, white light.

"I am the one who watches," the figure said, his voice smooth and emotionless. "The one who knows the truth of the shadows."

Kai took a cautious step back, his instincts screaming danger. "What do you want?"

"I want nothing," the figure replied. "I am here to offer you understanding. To offer you the truth."

"The truth?" Kai repeated, his voice filled with skepticism. "What truth?"

The figure stepped closer, his movements fluid, as if he were part of the very shadows themselves. "You seek to control the shadows, but you cannot control that which you do not understand. You fear their darkness, yet you call upon them for power. This is why they resist you."

Kai narrowed his eyes. "And what am I supposed to understand? That the shadows have a mind of their own? That they're some kind of sentient force?"

"They are not sentient in the way you believe," the figure said, his voice calm. "The shadows are alive, yes, but they are not creatures to be tamed. They are a force—one that exists in balance with light. To wield them, you must accept their nature, not fight it."

Kai's mind raced. He had always viewed the shadows as a tool, a weapon to be used in his quest for vengeance. But now, standing here in the Abyss, he realized how little he truly understood them.

"And if I don't?" Kai asked, his voice challenging. "What happens if I reject the shadows?"

The figure's glowing eyes flickered, and for a brief moment, Kai thought he saw a glint of amusement. "Then they will consume you. Just as they have consumed countless others who sought to wield their power without understanding."

Kai's chest tightened. He had seen what happened when the shadows spiraled out of control—he had felt their chaos, their hunger. But was there truly a way to master them? Or was this just another trap?

Before he could ask more questions, the ground beneath him rumbled. The shadows around them stirred, growing more agitated. The figure turned his head slightly, as if listening to something beyond Kai's senses.

"It seems your time here is limited," the figure said. "The Abyss is not a place where one lingers for long."

Kai's heart raced. "What do you mean?"

"The Shadowborn," the figure said, his voice growing fainter. "It hunts you still, even here."

The words sent a chill down Kai's spine. The Shadowborn… it hadn't been left behind. It had followed him into the Abyss.

"You must decide, Kai," the figure continued. "Will you embrace the shadows, or will they consume you?"

The ground trembled violently, and in the distance, Kai could hear the low growl of the creature, growing louder by the second. He turned to face the figure again, but the shadowy form had already begun to dissipate, melting back into the darkness.

"No!" Kai shouted, reaching out as if to stop him. "Wait—how do I embrace them? What do I do?"

But the figure was gone, leaving Kai alone in the vast emptiness of the Abyss. The growling grew louder, more menacing, and the shadows around him began to writhe, closing in like a predator stalking its prey.

The Shadowborn was coming for him.

Kai clenched his fists, his mind racing. He didn't know how to control the shadows, not fully—but he couldn't let the fear consume him. He had to survive. He had to find a way out of the Abyss and back to Lysandra.

Suddenly, a flash of light pierced through the darkness, illuminating the way ahead. It flickered like a dying star, but it offered a glimmer of hope. It reminded him of the bond he shared with Lysandra—their light could pierce through even the darkest void.

With renewed determination, Kai sprinted toward the light, feeling the shadows claw at him from behind, but he refused to be held back. He would embrace the darkness not as an enemy but as a part of himself—a necessary force to harness.

As he ran, he could hear the Shadowborn's furious roar echoing behind him, but he focused on the flickering light ahead. He would not be consumed; he would rise from the depths of despair stronger than before.

Just as the shadows threatened to engulf him completely, he reached the light—a portal shimmering in the darkness, a gateway back to the realm above. With one last surge of strength, Kai leaped forward, plunging into the light.
