Chereads / I Wield Shadows / Chapter 38 - The Awakening Shadows

Chapter 38 - The Awakening Shadows

The chill of the vision clung to Kai's skin as he tried to ground himself in the present. Lysandra's face swam in and out of focus, her worry pulling him back to the here and now, but his mind kept drifting to the shadowy figure's warning.

You're not the only one who wields the power of shadows.

Lysandra's voice pierced through the fog. "Kai, what just happened? You were out cold. I… I thought I lost you."

Kai struggled to sit up, his muscles weak and trembling. Every movement felt like dragging a stone uphill. His body had been drained, almost hollowed out from the power he had unleashed. Yet, there was something else—a lingering residue from the connection he'd made in the shadow realm.

"Did you see anything?" he asked hoarsely, wincing as he rubbed his temples.

"What do you mean?" Lysandra's eyes widened slightly. "We were surrounded by shadows, and you just collapsed. The manarites are… dead, Kai. All of them."

He shook his head. That wasn't what he was asking. "No, not here. I was somewhere else. A… shadow realm. There was someone something there. It spoke to me. It said we're not alone. There are others who can control shadows, and they're coming."

Lysandra's expression turned grim. "Others like you?"

Kai nodded. "And they're not allies."

The weight of that realization settled between them like a stone. If what the figure said was true, then Kai wasn't just fighting against manarites or even the academy's hidden machinations. He was part of something larger a game being played by forces he didn't yet understand.

Lysandra glanced around the forest, her eyes scanning the treeline. The stillness that had followed the battle felt oppressive, almost unnatural, as if the shadows themselves were watching them now. "We need to move. Staying here is dangerous."

Kai's strength was returning, but not quickly enough. His thoughts felt tangled, weighed down by the vision and the knowledge that there were other shadow wielders out there. How long before they found him? And how powerful were they compared to him?

"We have to figure out what they want," Kai said, pushing himself to his feet with Lysandra's help. "But first, we need to get to safety."

The trees around them whispered with the wind as they moved deeper into the forest. With each step, Kai's mind buzzed with questions. Who was that figure? Why had they warned him? And what exactly did it mean to "embrace the shadows fully"?

As they walked, Lysandra remained silent, her gaze sharp as she navigated the path. But Kai could sense the tension in her she was calculating, thinking several steps ahead, as always.

"Kai," she finally said after several minutes, her voice soft but steady, "if what you saw is true, then you'll need more than just raw power. You'll need to understand the shadows better. We can't go back to the academy without a plan."

Kai didn't argue. His control over the shadows was still too unstable, and with enemies on the horizon, it wasn't just his life on the line anymore. If he couldn't master the darkness within him, it would consume him just as the vision had nearly done.

But where could they go to train? The academy had the resources, but it was also full of hidden dangers. The academy's leadership, Professor Rowan, the factions—it was a political web that Kai wasn't ready to navigate just yet.

"There's a place," Lysandra said, breaking his thoughts. "It's far from here, hidden from the eyes of the academy and any who seek you. I've only heard whispers about it from my family's archives… the Labyrinth of Shadows."

Kai froze. He had heard about the Labyrinth from old stories, but they had always been half-spoken myths, tales of an ancient maze where the darkness itself came alive.

"Are you serious?" Kai asked, his voice low. "The Labyrinth is real?"

Lysandra nodded. "It's not just real. It's where some of the most powerful shadow users in history trained and tested their abilities. If there's anywhere you can learn to control the shadows, it's there. But it's dangerous. The shadows… they have a will of their own. And if you're not careful, they'll consume you."

A shiver ran down Kai's spine. The idea of willingly walking into a place where the shadows could take over sounded like madness. But was it any different from what he had already experienced? The power inside him was wild, volatile, and it would destroy him if he didn't learn to control it.

"I don't see any other choice," Kai said, determination settling into his bones. "We go to the Labyrinth."

Lysandra gave a quick nod, her resolve matching his. "It's a few days' journey, but we'll make it. We have to."

---

By the time the sun began to set, they had left the dense forest behind and were making their way across a rocky, barren landscape. The air grew cooler, and Kai could sense the shift in the atmosphere. The closer they got to the Labyrinth, the more the shadows seemed to stretch, as if they were already reaching out to him, waiting for his arrival.

As night fell, they set up camp near a small outcrop of rocks, the flickering light of a fire casting long shadows around them. Lysandra was silent, her gaze fixed on the horizon, as if expecting something or someone to appear at any moment.

Kai lay back, staring up at the stars, but his mind was still back in the shadow realm, replaying the figure's words over and over.

He had to be ready.

Suddenly, a soft rustling sound broke the quiet. Kai sat up, his senses on high alert. The firelight flickered, casting strange, twisting shadows around the camp. Lysandra's hand was already on her weapon, her eyes scanning the darkness.

"Do you hear that?" she whispered.

Kai nodded, standing slowly. The sound was faint, almost like a whisper carried by the wind, but it was growing louder.

Then, out of the darkness, a shape emerged.

It was humanoid, its form barely distinguishable from the shadows themselves. But as it moved closer, the firelight revealed its face or what was left of it. The figure was draped in tattered robes, its skin pale and mottled, as if it had been drained of life. Its eyes, sunken and hollow, glowed with a faint, eerie light.

Kai's breath caught in his throat.

The creature took another step forward, its voice a raspy whisper that sent chills down his spine. "You've been marked."

Lysandra was on her feet in an instant, drawing her blade, but the creature didn't react. It stood there, staring at Kai with a gaze that seemed to pierce through him.

"I've been waiting for you," the creature rasped. "The shadows have called, and now you must answer."

Kai's heart pounded in his chest. "Who are you?"

The creature's lips twisted into a grotesque smile. "I am the first. The one who walks between worlds. And you…" It stepped closer, its voice dropping to a sinister whisper. "You are the chosen one. The one who will bring balance or destruction."

Kai's pulse quickened. "What do you want?"

The creature's smile widened. "To teach you. To show you the true nature of the shadows. But first…" It raised a bony hand, pointing toward the horizon. "You must survive."

Before Kai could react, the ground beneath him shifted. The shadows around them writhed and twisted, forming a swirling vortex that threatened to swallow them whole. Lysandra shouted something, but her voice was drowned out by the roar of the darkness.

Kai's vision blurred, the world spinning as the vortex closed in. And then—

Everything went black.
