Chapter 26 - 26. Magic Medicine and Great Nobles

yesterday, I didn't conduct any business. After having dinner today, Jason Liu opened the store, ready to sell the remaining soap, 7,000 sheets of A4 paper, and 5,000 refills.

Lena first went to Winterfell, quit her job as a kitchen steward, and started selling goods in the store alongside Jason Liu. This change followed a remarkable event: Jason had cured little Lillian, a child whom Maester Luwin of Winterfell had declared unsavable. News of this miracle spread through Winterfell Market Town overnight.

The penicillin he used, along with the injection method he demonstrated, enhanced his reputation after being widely talked about by the townspeople who witnessed the event. Before this, people viewed him as a minor noble merchant from an unknown place, selling unusual items. Now, everyone called him a great noble from a powerful Eastern family, claiming he had a "magic medicine" that saved little Lillian from death. Such medicine was typically reserved for the highest nobility, reinforcing the belief that Jason Liu was indeed a significant nobleman.

The reasoning behind this belief was compelling. Jason Liu was pleased to be recognized as a great noble because a higher status would help him interact more effectively with the powerful people in Westeros in the future.

Business today was better than expected. Merchants who had previously bought soap and tested it were now eager to purchase larger quantities. Lena handled the money while Jason Liu gathered the goods at the counter.

They sold 300 bars of soap, with 100 of those being a surprisingly popular type of soap. A merchant from King's Landing purchased 100 bars right away. Additionally, they sold 2,000 sheets of A4 paper at half price, making it only five bronze stars each. The refills also did well, selling 1,000 pieces. Although they weren't as easy to use without a barrel, they were much more convenient than quills.

Pricing was as follows: one piece of soap cost 50 bronze stars, and they sold 100 for 100 silver deer, which equated to 1 golden dragon. The A4 paper sold for 100 silver deer, and the 1,000 refills were priced at 500 silver deer, amounting to 3 golden dragons and 200 silver deer. By the end of the morning, they had earned 4 golden dragons and 450 silver deer.

Lina gazed at the large money box filled with silver coins, her mouth agape in astonishment. This was the most money she had ever seen at her age. Jason Liu closed the store and organized the money, totaling 4 golden dragons and 1,357 silver deer. There was so much silver that converting it into golden dragons for easier use in modern times would be better.

However, exchanging such a large sum of money was challenging in Westeros, where banks didn't exist. Understanding Jason Liu's dilemma, Lena suggested they seek out Maester Luwin in Winterfell for assistance in converting the silver deer into golden dragons. Since Winterfell had to pay the servants' salaries every month, they often dealt with silver deer and could help with the exchange.

Jason Liu's eyes lit up at Lena's proposal. Maester Luwin held three crucial roles: consultant, doctor, and tutor in Winterfell, and he was considered Duke Eddard's right-hand man, which meant his status was very high. Such an important person was not someone Jason Liu could meet easily.

"Lena, do you have a way to reach Maester Luwin?" Jason Liu asked, curious.

Lena blushed and shook her head. "My sister used to be Master Rickon's nurse. She took care of him and had the chance to meet Maester Luwin. Last time little Lillian was seriously ill, it was my sister who asked him for treatment."

"Then you should ask your sister to help find Maester Luwin," Jason Liu suggested. He then had a lightbulb moment and took out ten refills, handing them to Lena. "Give these to Maester Luwin. I'm sure he will appreciate this gift!"

Coming from a modern society, Jason Liu understood the importance of etiquette, so he applied those rules here as well. If Maester Luwin could assist him in converting the silver, then the ten refills would be a worthwhile gesture.

Lena took the ten refills and mentioned this plan to her sister Martha when she returned home at noon. After considering it for a moment, Martha agreed, "Leave this to me."

In the afternoon, Martha took her child and spoke to Hillie, another maid who cared for Master Rickon. She asked Hillie to watch over him for a while so she could visit the Maester's Tower to find Maester Luwin.

Upon arriving at the maester's tower, Martha found that Maester Luwin was not present, but his assistant Boris was there, feeding the crows in the crow house.

"Martha, I heard that the noble from a foreign land cured little Lillian. Is this true?" Boris asked, surprised as he approached her.

Seeing little Lillian cradled in Martha's arms, Boris took her temperature and noticed her improved condition. Witnessing her recovery, he finally believed the rumors he had heard while passing through the stables earlier.

"Yes, thanks to Lord Jason East's kindness, my little Lillian has escaped the grasp of death," Martha replied, her smile reflecting her gratitude.

"It's hard to believe! I was there when Maester Luwin treated her, and her condition was so dire. No one in all of Westeros could help her; it seemed hopeless…" Boris paused, realizing he had spoken inappropriately. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to imply anything bad. I was just surprised! If this nobleman's treatment truly works, it will surely shake the whole of Winterfell!"

Martha was not concerned about Winterfell; she was focused on helping Lord Jason exchange silver deer for golden dragons.

"Are you exchanging 1,000 silver deer for golden dragons?" Boris asked in astonishment upon learning Martha's purpose for visiting. "It's true what they say about the foreign nobleman bringing strange goods and making a fortune. It seems all the rumors are accurate!"

"The old and new gods above, 1,000 silver deer is an enormous amount!" he sighed before continuing. "Even though Mr. Luwin is away, I can take you to the manager. They need a lot of silver deer to pay wages every month, so I believe manager won't mind helping Lord Jason."

"Really? Thank you so much, Boris!" Martha replied, feeling relieved.

Afterward, she pulled out ten pen refills and handed them to Boris. "This is a gift from Lord East to both you and Maester Luwin. These pens are from Lord East's homeland, and I've heard many merchants find them easy to write with."

Boris accepted the refills with a look of surprise. "Ah, I've heard of these pens, but I haven't had the chance to try one! Let me see how it works..." He took a small piece of parchment and began to write, testing out the refill.
