To protect his goods and personal safety, Jason Liu decided to hire some hardworking farmers and arm them to handle any possible threats.
He asked sisters Martha and Lena to help him select some reliable young farmers they knew.
At this moment, the only people Jason Liu could truly trust were Lena's family.
But there were too few people, and he couldn't start many of his businesses.
After all, he had just rented a warehouse in the modern world, and he couldn't leave it empty. It had to be used for buying goods in bulk.
After moving everything into his room in Westeros, Jason Liu went downstairs and told Lena to come up and help move the items.
He had promised to buy a quilt for her, and he had also brought clothes and shoes for both her and Martha, as well as for the two little ones, Michal and Lilian.
He had also brought 10 bags of flour, two buckets of olive oil, salt, spices, pork, chicken, apples, pears, and grapes, all of which would be moved to Lena's house.
"Oh, Old Gods above—"
When Lena saw all the things in Jason Liu's room, she covered her mouth in shock and gasped in surprise.
Jason Liu looked at Lena, whose beautiful brown eyes were wide with amazement, and proudly patted two brand-new quilts. "Lena, look! This is the new quilt I promised you last night! No matter how cold it gets, you won't be freezing anymore."
"You're giving this to me?" Lena was even more surprised when she realized it was just for her.
"Of course!" Jason Liu pointed to the clothes next to the quilt. "These clothes are also from my hometown. I got some for you, Martha, Michal, and little Lillian."
"Sir, you… you're too generous…" Lena was touched but also a bit overwhelmed, unable to find the right words.
"Come on, let's move the quilts and clothes first; there's a lot of food here!" Jason Liu took the lead, picking up two sets of quilts.
In a daze, Lena picked up the bag of clothes and followed Jason Liu back to their house.
At Lena's house, Michal had just come back from playing outside. He was holding a bowl of water when he saw Jason Liu and Lena entering with many things, and his little face grew nervous and confused.
"Michal, come help us move these things!" Lena naturally instructed her 5-year-old nephew.
Michal obediently took the bag from Aunt Lena's hand and placed it on the bed.
Kids from poor families often learn to help out early, and Michal, even at just five years old, was already capable of assisting with many tasks.
After putting everything down and returning to the room, Jason Liu picked up a big red apple and handed it to Michal. "Here, little one, have an apple!"
Looking at the big, red apple in his hand, Michal couldn't help but swallow, but he resisted the urge to take a bite. He shook his head, put the apple back, then picked up the bag with effort and followed his aunt back downstairs.
Jason Liu was surprised. He hadn't expected the little boy to show such self-control.
Smiling, Jason Liu shook his head and picked up two bags of flour, following them next door.
After going back and forth a few times, they finally cleared out everything from the room.
Sitting on a rough wooden bench in Lena's house, Jason Liu drank some bottled water he'd brought from the modern world.
Michal was finally nibbling on the big apple from before, and after some encouragement from Jason Liu, Lena also tried some of the juicy purple grapes.
Lena's family had never eaten such fruits before. They had only seen them occasionally in Winterfell but could never afford them—they were just too expensive.
After enjoying several sweet and sour grapes, Lena remembered to ask, "Sir, why did you buy so much food? When will we ever eat all of it…"
"It's not just for us," Jason Liu explained. "I plan to hire more people, so we'll need more food in the future. Right now, there are too few of us, and I can't sell a lot of goods. So, I need to hire more people, not just to help run the store, but also to find some honest and reliable young men who can act as my guards and protect us."
Lena looked at him in surprise. She hadn't expected him to have such plans, but she nodded repeatedly, saying she'd help in any way he needed.
Seeing Lena and Michal enjoying their meal, Jason Liu felt a sense of relaxation and happiness.
At noon, Lena baked some bread and, under Jason Liu's guidance, fried some pork and chicken.
Thanks to the modern spices Jason Liu had brought, the fried dishes tasted much better than the usual stews they were used to in Westeros.
Martha returned during lunchtime and was shocked to see all the food in the house.
After Jason Liu shared his idea about hiring more people, Martha, who knew many neighbors nearby, offered to help find some trustworthy young men.
"Martha, like Lena, I want you to quit your job at Winterfell and come help me!" Jason Liu believed Martha was quite knowledgeable. She had taken care of Rickon Stark at Winterfell and had seen many important figures, making her much more experienced than most common women.
"Me… Can I really?" Martha was excited. Working close to home with a good salary and being able to take care of Michal was a perfect opportunity.
"Of course you can!" Jason Liu decided firmly. "You should quit your job at Winterfell this afternoon. I'm planning to start a big business in the Winterfell market!"
Although Martha didn't fully understand what kind of big business Jason Liu had in mind, she silently vowed to work hard and repay him.
That afternoon, Martha went back to Winterfell and told the steward, Mr. Bernard, that she wanted to resign from taking care of young Rickon.
When Mr. Bernard casually asked why and learned she would be working for Jason Liu, he allowed her to leave and even settled her wages for the days worked.
Later that afternoon, Jason Liu took a break from his business, and his shop was soon filled with curious townspeople who had heard about his hiring.
Martha spread the word that Jason Liu was looking to hire, and it caused quite a stir in the Winterfell market.
People knew the young lord was successful in business, and he had gained a good reputation for giving medicine to heal little Lillian for free.
Moreover, the salary he offered was high—the shop workers would be provided with food, lodging, and a monthly wage of 6 silver stags (20 bronze stars a day). It was considered very generous in the North.
To accommodate the guards he was planning to recruit, Jason Liu even bought several nearby houses for them to stay in.
