Chapter 20 - 20. the powerful penicillin

Thump—

When Jason Liu spoke, Masha, who was holding her crying child, dropped to her knees in front of him. With a tearful face, she begged, "My lord, please, have mercy! Save my poor child! Please!"

Next to her, a young girl also knelt, dragging a little boy with her. She looked up at Jason Liu with big, brown eyes filled with tears and pleaded, "My lord, please save poor Lillian. I swear, in the name of the old and new gods, if you keep Lillian alive, I will serve you and your family for the rest of my life! I beg you, my lord!"

Over the past two days, the girl had heard about Jason Liu, a nobleman from the far east who had bought the house next to theirs. But this was the first time she had seen him in person.

"Please, don't kneel. Get up!" Jason Liu said, feeling suddenly anxious. He reached out to help them but hesitated, unsure. Instead, he said, "I promise to try the medicine I brought to treat your child, but I can't guarantee that I can save her. Do you agree to let me try?"

Jason Liu made it clear that he was not promising a cure but only offering to attempt treatment, and it was up to Lillian's mother to agree.

"Since you have a way, please try it quickly! May the old gods bless us. Perhaps the magical medicine you brought can save Lillian!" Before the young girl could speak, an older man named Rhodes had already agreed.

"Ooo, ooo… Even if you try, I can't just watch my poor Lillian suffer and die. Please do what you can!" desperate and helpless, saw a glimmer of hope and agreed to let Jason Liu try.

"Let me take a look first," Jason Liu said. He didn't rush to grab the medicine but walked over to the baby girl, who had her eyes closed, her face red and hot. The crying was getting softer. He observed her carefully.

He touched the baby girl's forehead and body, feeling how high her temperature was.

There was no time to waste. If this high fever continued, it could be fatal for this little baby

Jason Liu rushed upstairs to get the medicine, bringing back an entire backpack filled with supplies.

"Put the baby on the bed and take off all her clothes," he instructed Masha. He then opened a bottle of medical alcohol, took out some gauze, and told her to wipe the baby with alcohol to help cool her down.

The young girl helped as they wiped Lillian down with alcohol.

While they worked, Jason Liu prepared the penicillin for the baby's first injection.

He didn't know what illness Lillian had, but he understood that a high fever could lead to inflammation. He knew that penicillin was the best anti-inflammatory medicine available in Westeros.

First, he needed to conduct a skin test. He carefully injected a small amount of penicillin into the back of the baby girl's thin hand and waited to see the reaction.

Everyone in the room held their breath, watching closely as Jason Liu treated the little girl.

Ten minutes later, the skin test showed no allergic reaction, and it was safe to proceed. Jason Liu injected 0.5ml, or 300,000 units, of penicillin into the baby.

Since it was the first time the baby had received penicillin, he was cautious. Unlike in modern times, where antibiotics are often overused, he didn't want to risk giving too much right away.

He wrapped the remaining penicillin syringe in alcohol-soaked gauze to prevent contamination.

If this were in modern times, such practices might be criticized for not being strict enough. However, in Westeros, having any kind of medical treatment was already quite advanced.

Without overthinking, Jason Liu focused on doing his best.

After giving the baby the penicillin, he found a random stool and sat beside the bed, keeping a watchful eye on her.

He had no idea whether the penicillin would work.

The room was crowded with curious onlookers, all eager to see if this nobleman from the far east could save little Lillian from death.

The crowd made the air thick with a strong smell of sweat, which made Jason Liu feel nauseous. He had to ask people to step outside to allow some fresh air to circulate.

The onlookers obeyed and moved outside but gathered at the door, waiting eagerly.

There weren't many entertainment options in this era, so watching Jason Liu's medical efforts became an unexpected source of entertainment for the townsfolk.

As soon as the crowd thinned out, the air in the room improved.

For those who stayed, Jason Liu ignored them; they could watch quietly.

Time passed slowly, and slowly, Lillian's cries faded. Her painful expression softened, her breathing stabilized, and she began to fall asleep.

Jason Liu finally sighed with relief. It seemed the penicillin was working.

He reached out to touch Lillian's forehead and body again and felt that her temperature had dropped significantly.

He told Masha and the young girl to stop wiping her down with alcohol and to dress her and cover her with a blanket.

Fortunately, it was early summer, so even in the north, daytime temperatures weren't too low, and a blanket was sufficient.

"Phew… It looks like the medicine I brought is working. As long as she gets through the night, this child will survive!" Jason Liu said to Lillian's mother with a smile.

"Uuuuu, thank you, my lord! You saved my little Lillian! I can't express how grateful I am…" Masha's pale face flushed with excitement as she knelt again at Jason Liu's feet, repeating her thanks.

Even the young girl and the little boy looked at him with gratitude.

"Please, get up. You don't need to kneel to us. Stand up quickly; we don't like it when people kneel," Jason Liu said, helping the thin mother to her feet.

Hearing his words, Masha quickly stood up and went into the house. After a moment, she returned with a handful of silver deer, which seemed to be all her belongings.

"Sir, please accept this money…"
