Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 45 - Chapter 45

Chapter 45 - Chapter 45

The end of the duel brought a sepulchral silence to the arena. The shadows that had enveloped the battlefield were now dispersed, leaving only the rays of sunlight filtering through the open roof. Eveline, still breathing heavily, looked down at her defeated opponent. He appeared confused, lost in his own thoughts, while the audience around them remained paralyzed, unsure whether to applaud or flee.

Aria, who had watched the fight closely, rushed to Eveline, her eyes wide in shock. "You... you did it! How...?"

Before Eveline could respond, the academy director stepped onto the arena, followed by Varian. The director's face was serious, and as he approached, his eyes examined every detail with an expression that mixed concern and curiosity.

"Eveline," he began, "you have demonstrated something that few have ever seen. This power... these forces... are greater than you can imagine."

Varian stepped closer as well, but remained silent, merely observing. Eveline felt a knot in her stomach, as if something darker was about to be revealed.

"Do you have any control over this?" the director asked, tension evident in his voice.

Eveline hesitated, still uncertain about what was truly happening within her. "I... I am beginning to understand. But total control? Not yet. It feels more like a partnership than domination. The light and shadows... they coexist within me."

The director sighed, but before he could continue, the defeated boy, still on the ground, finally stood up, trembling, his face pale. "They... they will come after you," he murmured, his voice weak. "Those who control the shadows... they won't stop until they get what they want."

Eveline frowned as the director and Varian exchanged worried glances. "What are you talking about?" she asked, stepping forward.

"The cult," the boy replied, his eyes filled with fear. "They are watching. Always watching. And now they know who you are."

His words made the air in the arena feel heavier, as if an invisible shadow was growing around them.

"What is this cult?" Eveline asked, her voice steady but with a hint of anxiety.

Varian, finally breaking the silence, answered before the boy could speak. "They are those who manipulate the shadows. Ancient, forgotten forces seeking absolute power. And they see in you the key to that power. With your connection to both light and shadows, you are more than a target—you are what they need to achieve ultimate balance, but on their terms."

Eveline's heart raced. It was exactly what she feared. Her power was not merely a personal blessing or curse; it was a beacon attracting enemies far greater than she could ever imagine.

---

In the days following the duel, Eveline remained on constant alert. The festival competitions continued, but tension was palpable throughout the academy. Extra guards patrolled the campus, and conversations among students were filled with rumors about the "incident" during the final duel. No one knew exactly what had happened, but everyone seemed to feel that something had changed.

Eveline spent more time with Varian, training not only in fencing but also in controlling her internal forces. He guided her patiently, helping her learn how to balance the light and shadows without letting one overpower the other. However, there was something he wasn't saying—a worry she could see in his eyes, but he always deflected when she tried to ask.

"You need to be ready for what's coming," he told her one night while they trained in one of the academy's more secluded rooms.

"Ready for what exactly?" Eveline questioned, pausing for a moment. "You keep speaking as if something big is about to happen, but no one tells me what it is."

Varian crossed his arms, his expression serious. "The cult is coming after you, Eveline. They've already sent spies into the academy, and that boy from the duel was just the first. They know what you're capable of, and they won't stop until they get what they want."

"So what am I supposed to do?" Eveline asked, her frustration starting to build. "Run? Hide?"

"No," Varian replied firmly. "You need to face them. But for that, you have to understand the power you carry. And you must accept that your life will never be the same again. From now on, you will be at the center of a war."

Eveline felt the weight of Varian's words sink into her shoulders. A war. All she wanted was to find peace in her new world, to live a normal life. But now, she found herself at the center of an ancient conflict between light and shadows, surrounded by forces she barely understood.

"And am I... ready for that?" she asked, her voice softer, almost hesitant.

Varian looked deeply into her eyes, and for the first time, she saw something in him beyond the usual confidence. There was a trace of vulnerability. "You have to be, Eveline. Because if you're not... this entire world could fall into the wrong hands."

---

The next morning, Eveline walked alone through the academy's hallways, lost in thought. Varian's words echoed in her mind, mingled with the weight of what the defeated boy had said about the cult. She felt on the brink of an important decision, but still didn't know which path to take.

Suddenly, a voice called her, pulling her from her reverie.

"Eveline!"

She turned to see Aria running toward her, breathless and with a look of concern on her face. "The director wants to speak with you. Now."

Eveline's heart raced, but she nodded, following Aria to the director's office. When they arrived, she found not only the director but also Varian and several members of the academy council, all wearing serious expressions.

"Eveline," the director began, "we've received concerning information. The cult we've heard about is closer than we thought. Some of our own guards have been compromised."

Eveline felt a chill run down her spine. "What does that mean?"

"It means," Varian replied, his voice darker than ever, "that they are inside the walls of the academy. And they are waiting for the right moment to act."

The director stepped closer, placing a hand on Eveline's shoulder. "You are the key to the future of this world, Eveline. And we need to prepare for the confrontation that is coming."

Eveline took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her responsibility grow even heavier. The shadows were closing in, and she knew that soon, she would be forced to confront her destiny.

The time for preparation was running out. Now, everything depended on the choices she would make in the coming weeks. And Eveline knew that at the center of it all was a crucial question: could she find the balance between light and shadows before it was too late?
