Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 50 - Chapter 50

Chapter 50 - Chapter 50

The forest around Eveline and her companions seemed to close in like a living trap, the muffled sound of quick footsteps and whispers filling the air. The shadows of the cult's spies emerged from the trees, their slender, hooded figures moving with supernatural agility.

"Varian, Aria, form a circle!" Eveline commanded, her senses sharp. The impending battle wouldn't be easy, and she knew every move had to be calculated.

Varian, his sword already drawn, took a defensive stance beside Eveline, while Aria, with her quick and precise movements, prepared to strike at any enemy that got too close. The three of them formed a solid barrier, ready for the attack.

"We can't let them delay our mission," Eveline said firmly, her sword reflecting the faint light that filtered through the trees. "The informant is our only lead, and they know it."

The spies began their assault. They were fast, almost indistinguishable in the shadows of the forest, but Eveline was prepared. She could feel the darkness around her, pulsing like a second instinct. Using her connection with the shadows, she could predict their movements as if she already knew the dance of darkness they were trying to impose.

With a precise strike, Eveline disarmed the first spy that approached, her sword cutting through the air with a shadowy yet bright gleam. "You won't stop us," she muttered as she delivered another blow, taking down a second enemy.

Varian, at her side, blocked attacks skillfully, his strength matching that of an experienced knight. He fought with precision and aggression, every strike of his sword a direct response to the threat before them. "These spies are different from the others. They seem more prepared," he shouted, panting, as he cut down another attacker.

Aria, swift as the wind, slid through the shadows with impressive lightness, delivering quick and accurate strikes. "Yes, they're testing our limits," she responded as she dodged a blow and counterattacked with precision. "They want to see how far we can go before we tire out."

Eveline knew Aria was right. The cult was playing with time, trying to wear the group down before they could reach their destination. Every move they made was calculated to delay and weaken.

As she fought, Eveline noticed something peculiar: the spies were using some sort of distortion magic, manipulating the forest's shadows to confuse their opponents. The darkness seemed to bend around them, making it difficult to predict their movements accurately.

"These shadows… they're being manipulated!" Eveline exclaimed, blocking an attack from a spy who had appeared out of nowhere.

She narrowed her eyes and focused. **If they're using shadows, I can use my power against them.** Eveline concentrated, connecting with the darkness around her, and felt the shadows obey her will. With a subtle gesture, she manipulated the darkness around the spies, unraveling their distortions and revealing their true positions.

"Now!" Eveline shouted. Varian and Aria seized the opportunity, striking the spies who had been exposed. One by one, the enemies fell, unable to remain hidden in the shadows Eveline controlled.

For a moment, silence reigned in the forest. The spies were on the ground, defeated, and the trio remained on guard, waiting for more attacks. But to their surprise, no other enemies appeared. Those who remained had retreated, disappearing into the forest's shadows.

"They fled," Varian said, still alert. "But why?"

"It wasn't a retreat. They didn't need to win this battle," Eveline replied, her breathing heavy. "All they wanted was to delay us."

Aria, wiping her sword, nodded. "We need to keep moving. We can't let them delay us any more than they already have."

Eveline knew Aria was right. The cult had already played their first card, and they had no more time to lose. With one last glance at the fallen spies, Eveline led the group out of the clearing, continuing their path toward the city where the informant awaited them.

---

The journey through the forest felt endless, but finally, after hours of travel, the trio reached the outskirts of the city. The lights of the houses gleamed in the distance, and the cobblestone streets were calm, with no immediate signs of danger.

Eveline felt relieved but knew that relief was only temporary. "The informant should be waiting in one of the taverns," she said. "Let's meet him as quickly as possible."

Varian and Aria nodded, both still on high alert. The city's streets seemed safe, but the shadows that had followed them through the forest could be lurking anywhere.

They headed to the indicated tavern, a discreet and secluded place, hidden among the dark alleys of the city. As they entered, the dimly lit and stifling environment didn't inspire confidence, but Eveline knew it was their only option.

"We're looking for someone," Eveline said to the innkeeper, who barely lifted his eyes to them. "We were told he'd be waiting."

The man looked at them for a second, then pointed to a table in the corner of the room. "He's over there, but be discreet. Too many eyes are watching."

Eveline approached the table, where a hooded man was waiting, slowly sipping from a mug of ale. As the group sat down, he lifted his head, revealing a pair of sharp, wary eyes.

"So, you're the ones going against the cult," he said in a low voice. "I have information, but know that none of this will be easy to digest."

"We're ready," Eveline replied without hesitation. "We need to know what the cult is really planning."

The man sighed and leaned forward, speaking in a whisper: "The Shadow Cult is preparing for something much bigger than simple attacks. They're after an ancient artifact, a weapon that, if used, could change the balance between light and darkness forever."

Eveline felt a chill run down her spine. "What weapon?"

"The Eye of Shadows," the informant said. "A legendary object that can grant absolute control over the darkness and consume any trace of light in the world."

"If they get hold of it..." Aria began, but Eveline cut her off.

"They won't," she said firmly. "We'll stop them."

But deep down, Eveline knew their mission had just become far more dangerous. The cult was after unimaginable power, and the battle for the shadows had only just begun.
