Chapter 48
"When did you start preaching like the teacher, Haneda? Looks like you're still not well, better go back and rest!"
"Oh?"
Haneda raised his fist, which was as big as a sandbag, and said coldly,
"If reason doesn't work, I'll use my fists to make it work."
Seeing this, Obito immediately changed his tone:
"As expected of Haneda, even though he could just use his fists, he still tries to reason first. A cultured man, a cultured man."
Even though Obito said this, deep down he was still unconvinced. If it weren't for the fact that he couldn't beat Haneda, he wouldn't be afraid of him using "reason."
Casually, Obito glanced at the Hokage Monument and suddenly smirked, thinking to himself:
"Hmph, one day I'll become Hokage, and then I'll make sure to call you into my office every day for some 'educational talks'..."
At that moment, their teacher approached, holding a red-and-yellow scroll.
"Haneda, Kakashi, the Hokage wants to see you. It's about rewarding you both for completing an S-rank mission."
As he spoke, their teacher's eyes occasionally showed a hint of envy.
An S-rank mission—not only had he never been assigned one, but he hadn't even been qualified to touch such a mission. Yet, his students had completed one!
"S-rank mission?! Teacher, you must be joking, right?"
Upon hearing this, Obito couldn't sit still, asking excitedly.
After all, an S-rank mission represented extreme danger and great contribution to the village! He had just been fantasizing about becoming Hokage, and now these two, who weren't even interested in the title, were closer to it than him.
This made Obito feel quite discontent.
"Yes, it's an S-rank mission! This is Hokage-sama's personal decision. He believes that Haneda and Kakashi's performance, given the circumstances, fully deserves the honor of an S-rank mission!"
The teacher spoke with a mixture of excitement and joy. Haneda and Kakashi were his students, and their achievements reflected well on him as their teacher.
"Go on now, Haneda, Kakashi. Don't keep the Hokage waiting!" the teacher reminded them.
"Alright, we'll head there right away," Haneda replied, pulling Kakashi along as they hurried towards the school gate. They seemed to be in a rush, but Haneda was simply trying to avoid being seen by others—he had something he needed to discuss with Kakashi in private.
...
After Haneda and Kakashi left, the news spread quickly among the students who overheard it. Within moments, the entire class was abuzz.
"No surprise there, Haneda and Kakashi are so cool, powerful, and skilled. No wonder they haven't been around for the past few days—they were completing an S-rank mission!"
"Ahh! Just thinking about Haneda's cold, emotionless face as he defeats enemies, I can't take it!"
"Girls, I'm going in first—I need to look at Haneda and Kakashi's photos again!"
"What?! You secretly took pictures? Hand them over, and I might forgive you!"
A group of girls started bickering over Haneda and Kakashi.
Not far away, sitting under the shade of a tree, Obito listened in annoyance. He looked around for Rin and was relieved to see she wasn't mixed in with the shallow girls.
That is, until Rin's voice cut through his thoughts, and Obito's heart sank.
"Haneda and Kakashi are really popular, aren't they, Rin?"
Yūhi Kurenai sat beside Rin, holding her hand.
"Kakashi and Haneda are both so handsome, and their skills are far beyond the rest of the class. Honestly, Kurenai, I admire Kakashi a lot."
Hearing this, Kurenai smiled and replied,
"Of course. Who wouldn't be drawn to guys who are good-looking and can protect others?"
With that comment, Obito felt a new weight on his heart.
Thanks to all the buzz about Haneda and Kakashi, even Guy, who was busy with self-imposed training, took note of it.
"Haneda and Kakashi completed an S-rank mission..."
"Yosh! As expected from my eternal rivals! I must work even harder!"
...
Haneda and Kakashi arrived at a secluded hallway outside the school. The hallway was shaded by buildings on both sides, slightly dark, with no one else around.
When Haneda didn't detect anyone following them, he stopped and spoke in a low voice:
"Kakashi, you're aware of the reward, right?"
"Yes. My father told me about it—it's related to the Scroll of Seals," Kakashi nodded slightly,
"He didn't say much about the scroll itself, just told me to pick whatever I felt was suitable."
Hearing that Sakumo didn't make any specific arrangements, Haneda breathed a sigh of relief.
"Kakashi, if you trust me, you should choose the Flying Thunder God technique."
"This is the signature jutsu of the Second Hokage. It's a space-time technique, and there's no other jutsu that can match it in terms of mobility."
"Although I don't know if you have the talent to learn it, you should at least give it a try."
"One reason Sakumo sama didn't give you any instructions is that there's nothing particularly suitable for you in the Scroll of Seals."
Kakashi thought for a moment and replied:
"Yeah, there's not much that suits me."
"The Second Hokage's water-style techniques require too much chakra, so they aren't a good fit for me. The other jutsu are either wood-style or strange forbidden techniques."
"My specialty is lightning and earth-style techniques, but the lightning techniques in the scroll are too few and too difficult to learn, not even as practical as your Chidori, Haneda."
At the mention of "your Chidori," Haneda gave a slightly awkward smile.
Thankfully, Kakashi didn't know who originally came up with the Chidori technique—otherwise, another Tobirama-style intellectual property dispute would be on the horizon.
...
They arrived at the Hokage's office.
Haneda had been there a few days ago, and still remembered the layout. He glanced at the newly replaced door to the office, feeling a little curious.
The last time he was here, the door was a bit worn out.
He wasn't sure if the Third Hokage had replaced it just to welcome them, or for some other reason.
After knocking on the door, Haneda and Kakashi politely called out:
"Hokage-sama."
"Ah, it's Haneda and Kakashi. Come in and have a seat."
The gentle voice of the Third Hokage came from inside, and the two entered the office.
The Third Hokage was calmly dealing with paperwork. He glanced up at Haneda and smiled as he said:
"I heard from the ninjas that you created an A-rank lightning jutsu called Chidori, is that right?"
Haneda nodded in acknowledgment.
Tsunade had already informed him last night about the jutsu exchange.
The Third Hokage put down his pipe and smiled,
"Haneda, your Chidori fills a gap in the village's lightning-style jutsu repertoire. I'd like to ask you to contribute it to the village."
"Of course, the village will compensate you accordingly—you can exchange it for another jutsu of the same rank from the Scroll of Seals."
Without hesitation, Haneda replied,
"I'm happy to contribute to the village, Hokage-sama. You're too kind."
Seeing this, the Third Hokage nodded quietly, feeling that Haneda had the potential to become like Kagami Uchiha.
With a wave of his hand, two Anbu members carried in a scroll that was taller than Haneda and Kakashi.
"The Scroll of Seals not only contains forbidden techniques but also many advanced and combination jutsu."
"Take your time choosing, Haneda, Kakashi—there's no rush."
The Third Hokage spoke kindly from the side.
With a glance at each other, Haneda and Kakashi began searching for the techniques they had planned to select.
Kakashi chose the Flying Thunder God.
As for Haneda, he went for the Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu and the Bringer of Darkness Jutsu.
The Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu had long been part of Haneda's plan. As for the Bringer of Darkness Jutsu, it was an A-rank genjutsu created by the Second Hokage, specifically designed to counter the Uchiha clan.
Haneda was already skilled in genjutsu, and learning the Bringer of Darkness Jutsu would ensure no one could deceive his eyes.
