Inside the steep darkness, Zain's body stayed motionless. Not completely motionless though, there was still a movement in his body; it was his heart.
Zain is still alive.
Kox knew about this since long due to his magic, this is the exact reason why Kox aimed his attack towards to force the beast to vomit what it had swallow.
Maybe with Zain, they'll have a better chance. Zain travelled through the darkness after all and battle the beast in it as well.
They never saw Zain fighting but he knew Zain never got defeated without putting on a good fight.

The heart beat keeps getting louder and his chest movement kept moving irregularly.
Loosing a body part is not something Zain was new to, even back then in his home when he stayed in the same settlement as Gem and Dem, he lost his limbs a few times. It was all Gem's doing for sure.
