Chapter 214 - 214. The Harbinger's Return

The trio stood still, catching their breath in the heart of the Timeless Abyss. The oppressive silence settled once more, but now the only thing standing between them and their goal was the pulsing glow of the Heart of the Abyss. Its soft, rhythmic hum reverberated through the space, sending shivers down their spines.

"It's... beautiful," Aran said, his voice barely above a whisper. He took a cautious step forward, entranced by the dark, swirling energy that seemed to defy all logic.

Lyssa held him back with a firm grip on his shoulder. "Don't get too close. We don't know what this thing will do to us."

Edward, still breathing heavily from their escape, finally lowered his hand from the protective barrier he had cast. His eyes were fixed on the Heart. "This is it," he said softly. "The source of infinite power. If we can harness it, we'll be able to cloak the Heart of Aether from the Harbinger… at least for a time."

As Edward reached out with his mind, sensing the energy of the Heart, his brow furrowed. There was something wrong. The Heart's power was immense, yes, but it was also unstable—volatile in a way that made even his experienced hands tremble with uncertainty.

"Are you sure this is safe?" Lyssa asked, watching Edward closely.

He hesitated, then turned to her. "Safe? No. But it's the only chance we have. The Heart of the Abyss is the only thing powerful enough to mask the Heart of Aether from the Harbinger's fragment."

Lyssa's grip on her sword tightened. "If this thing blows up in our faces, I'm blaming you."

Aran snorted. "Great, no pressure."

Edward took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. He could feel the pull of the Heart of the Abyss, its energy both seductive and terrifying. But there was no time for hesitation. They had already come too far to turn back now. He began weaving a complex spell in the air, drawing from the dark energies around them. Symbols formed, glowing faintly in the void.

"This will allow me to siphon off just enough of the Heart's power to mask the Heart of Aether," Edward explained. "But I need you both to watch my back. If anything goes wrong—"

A sudden pulse of energy from the Heart of the Abyss interrupted him, sending a shockwave through the air. Edward staggered, his spell faltering.

"Edward!" Lyssa shouted, rushing to his side.

He gritted his teeth, trying to regain control of the spell. "Something's wrong... It's resisting me."

The air around them began to distort, and the ground under their feet rippled as if reality itself was tearing apart. The once-still void of the Timeless Abyss now felt alive, writhing with chaotic energy.

"We need to leave!" Aran yelled, panic rising in his voice. "This whole place is going to collapse!"

Before anyone could react, the sky—or what passed for the sky in this realm—tore open with a deafening roar. The void split apart, and a shadowy figure emerged, its presence suffocating and vast. It was as if the very essence of the Timeless Abyss recoiled from this new force, retreating into itself.

The Void Harbinger's fragment had found them.

"No... not now," Edward gasped, his eyes widening in horror. He stumbled backward, the energy of the Heart of the Abyss now spiraling out of control. The Harbinger's arrival had destabilized everything.

The figure loomed above them, a twisted amalgamation of shadow and energy, its form ever-shifting, as if it existed in multiple realities at once. Its eyes—or what could be considered eyes—glowed with a sickly, otherworldly light, and it reached out with a clawed hand, its intent clear.

"It's here for the Heart of Aether," Lyssa muttered, raising her sword.

"We have to protect it!" Aran shouted, fumbling for his own weapon. But in the face of such overwhelming power, his hands shook.

The Harbinger's fragment descended, its presence pressing down on them like a physical weight. The ground beneath them cracked and shattered, reality itself warping under the strain of its arrival. Time seemed to slow, the pulse of the Heart of the Abyss syncing with the slow, deliberate movements of the Harbinger.

Edward, struggling to maintain control, forced his mind to focus. "We can't let it take the Heart," he rasped, his voice tight with strain. "If it gets its hands on it… everything will be lost."

Lyssa didn't wait for further instruction. With a battle cry, she lunged at the Harbinger's fragment, her sword glowing with a brilliant light as she channeled every ounce of her power into the strike.

The blade met the Harbinger's form, but instead of cutting through, it passed through the creature's shadowy body as if slicing through smoke. The Harbinger didn't even flinch.

"Dammit!" Lyssa cursed, dodging back as the Harbinger's hand swept toward her.

Edward's mind raced. There had to be a way—something they could do to stop it. But the Heart of the Abyss was still spiraling out of control, and his connection to it was weakening by the second. If he lost control completely, they wouldn't just lose the Heart of Aether—they'd all be consumed by the Abyss.

"Aran, Lyssa, keep it distracted!" Edward shouted. "I need more time!"

Aran, though terrified, summoned his courage and fired a barrage of magical projectiles at the Harbinger, each one fizzling as it made contact with the creature's form. Lyssa danced around the Harbinger's attacks, dodging its massive strikes, though her sword could do little more than keep its attention on her.

Edward's hands moved faster, his mind racing as he reached deep into the Heart of the Abyss, pulling at the unstable energy. He could feel the power coalescing, but it was dangerous—far more dangerous than he'd anticipated. If he miscalculated, they would all be erased from existence.

The Harbinger let out a low, rumbling growl, its attention now fully focused on Edward as it sensed the mage's growing connection to the Heart of the Abyss.

"Now or never," Edward whispered.

With a final, desperate push, Edward completed the spell. The symbols in the air blazed with light, and a shockwave of energy erupted from the Heart of the Abyss, enveloping them all.

For a moment, everything froze—the Harbinger, the unstable energy, even the chaotic landscape of the Abyss. Time itself seemed to hold its breath.

Then, with a deafening roar, the Harbinger was flung back, its form unraveling into tendrils of shadow. The ground beneath them solidified, and the swirling energy of the Heart of the Abyss stabilized.

Edward collapsed to his knees, panting. "It's… it's done," he said, barely able to speak.

Lyssa sheathed her sword, her eyes still on the retreating form of the Harbinger. "But it's not over. That thing will come back."

Edward nodded weakly. "I've bought us time. But we need to move. We have the Heart of the Abyss, but the Harbinger won't stop hunting us."

Aran helped Edward to his feet, his face pale. "Where do we go now?"

Edward glanced at the dark pulsing Heart. "We leave the Abyss. And we prepare for war."
