Chapter 215 - 215. The Abyss Beckons

The weight of the void seemed to press harder on their souls as Edward, Lyssa, and Aran made their way out of the Timeless Abyss. Despite the victory over the Harbinger's fragment, an uneasy silence lingered between them. Their steps echoed hollowly across the fractured landscape, each one carrying them closer to the boundary of the Abyss, yet further into an uncertain future.

Edward, still drained from his connection to the Heart of the Abyss, walked with slow, deliberate steps. His body felt heavier than ever, but his mind was racing. In his hand, the Heart of the Abyss pulsed with a dark rhythm, almost as if it were alive, feeding on the fear and tension in the air.

Lyssa broke the silence first. "How long do we have before it comes back?" Her voice was hard, masking her concern, but the tension in her shoulders betrayed her.

"Not long," Edward muttered, barely lifting his head. His gaze was fixed on the swirling mass of energy in his hand. "The Harbinger's fragment may have been banished for now, but it's not gone. It'll return, and when it does, it will be even more powerful."

Aran clenched his fists. "We can't just keep running. There has to be a way to defeat it for good. Some kind of weapon, or spell—anything."

"There's more to it than just the Harbinger," Edward replied, his voice strained. "The Heart of the Abyss isn't just a tool—it's a prison. It holds something far worse, something that has been waiting in the darkness for eons. The Harbinger is just the beginning."

Lyssa shot him a sharp look. "What are you saying?"

Edward stopped walking, turning to face them both. His eyes, once filled with confidence, now reflected uncertainty. "The Abyss isn't just a place—it's a force. A force of entropy, of annihilation. The Heart of the Abyss controls that power, but if we're not careful, it could destroy us all."

Silence fell over them again, the weight of Edward's words sinking in.

Lyssa gripped her sword tightly. "Then what do we do? If we can't use the Heart's power, and the Harbinger will keep coming after us, what's the point of even having it?"

Edward stared at the Heart in his hand, the pulsing light casting eerie shadows on his face. "We use it as bait."

Aran's eyes widened in disbelief. "Bait? Are you insane? You saw what that thing did back there! It nearly killed all of us!"

Edward nodded slowly. "I know. But if we can lure the Harbinger into a place where its power is weakened—somewhere outside the Abyss, where it's vulnerable—we might stand a chance. It's not unbeatable, Aran. It's tied to the Abyss. Outside of it, we have a slim chance."

Lyssa crossed her arms, her brow furrowed in thought. "A trap, then? We draw it out and strike when it's weakest."

"Exactly," Edward said, his voice growing stronger. "The Heart of the Abyss is what the Harbinger wants. If we can use that desire against it, we can force it into a confrontation on our terms."

Aran still looked uneasy, but there was a glint of hope in his eyes. "And where would we set this trap?"

Edward's gaze shifted to the edge of the Abyss, where the fractured darkness began to give way to the familiar stars of the outside world. "There's a place—an ancient temple built long before any of us were born. It's hidden in the Forgotten Wastes, a place where magic is suppressed. If we can lure the Harbinger there, it won't be able to use its full power."

Lyssa nodded slowly. "It's risky. But it might just work."

A cold wind swept through the Abyss, tugging at their cloaks as if the void itself was trying to pull them back. The path out of the Abyss was clearer now, the swirling mists parting before them. But none of them felt the relief they should have.

As they stepped closer to the boundary, Edward paused, his expression darkening. "There's one more thing," he said softly.

Lyssa and Aran turned to him, waiting.

Edward took a deep breath, steadying himself. "The Heart of the Abyss isn't just a tool—it's a living entity. The more I use it, the more it… bonds with me. The more I lose control."

Lyssa's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean, 'lose control'?"

"The Abyss is sentient," Edward said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It wants to consume everything. It whispers to me, pushing me to use its power. And every time I do, I feel it creeping deeper into my mind. If I keep using it... I might not be able to stop."

A heavy silence fell between them as the gravity of his words sunk in.

Aran looked horrified. "So what? If we use the Heart, you could end up like... like one of them?"

Edward nodded grimly. "That's the risk. But without it, we won't stand a chance against the Harbinger."

Lyssa's face was impassive, but her eyes flickered with something like worry. "You said the Heart could destroy everything. How do we know it won't turn on us in the end?"

"We don't," Edward admitted. "But we have no other choice. The Heart is the only thing powerful enough to stand against the Harbinger. If I can maintain control long enough, we might be able to stop it."

Lyssa's jaw tightened, and she let out a slow breath. "Then we make sure you stay in control. No matter what."

Edward smiled faintly, though there was little warmth in it. "I appreciate the confidence."

Aran, still looking unsure, glanced toward the boundary of the Abyss. "Then we head for the Forgotten Wastes?"

Edward nodded. "Yes. And once we're there, we prepare for the final confrontation."

The trio stepped closer to the edge, the swirling darkness of the Abyss receding as they neared the exit. The stars beyond flickered faintly, a reminder of the world outside—the world they had to protect.

But as they crossed the boundary and felt the familiar pull of reality settle back around them, a chill ran down Edward's spine. He could still hear the faint whisper of the Abyss, a dark promise that it wasn't finished with him yet.

And as they began their journey to the Forgotten Wastes, Edward knew that even if they defeated the Harbinger, the Abyss would be waiting.
