The blinding light faded, and the trio tumbled into an unfamiliar space. The first thing they noticed was the absence of sound. No wind, no distant rustling—nothing but an eerie stillness. The air was thick, oppressive, as if time itself had been stretched thin, and around them was a surreal landscape that defied logic.
"Where... are we?" Aran muttered, his voice sounding distorted in the strange space.
Lyssa stood up slowly, surveying their surroundings. The ground beneath them wasn't earth or stone but some ethereal, shifting material. It looked like liquid silver, but when she reached down to touch it, her fingers met solid resistance. Above them, the sky—or what passed for it—was a swirling void of black and white, streaked with flashes of light that danced like distant stars.
"This is the Timeless Abyss," Edward said, his voice hushed with reverence. "A realm outside of reality, where time loses meaning. Past, present, future—they all overlap here."
Lyssa frowned. "It feels… wrong."
Edward nodded. "It is wrong. This place wasn't meant for mortals like us. Only those with immense power can navigate the Abyss without going mad. We'll need to be careful—stay focused, and above all, don't lose track of your sense of self."
Aran scoffed, though his unease was clear. "Fantastic. I was hoping for some twisted nightmare realm next on the agenda."
Edward stepped forward cautiously, testing the strange ground beneath him. "We need to find the Heart of the Abyss. It's a source of immense power that we can use to mask the presence of the Heart of Aether. It's our best chance to hide from the Void Harbinger's fragment."
Lyssa glanced at the swirling void above them. "And where do we even start looking?"
Edward pointed ahead, where the landscape seemed to warp and twist in impossible ways. "There's a path—if you can call it that. It's hard to see, but if you follow the flow of energy in this place, it'll guide us. The Heart of the Abyss is like a beacon for those who know how to sense it."
They started moving, their steps cautious and deliberate. Every now and then, the ground beneath them rippled, and strange lights flashed in the sky. Time itself seemed to stretch and compress at random intervals—one moment, their walk felt like hours, the next, like mere seconds.
As they continued, Edward explained, "This place is a remnant of an ancient battle between forces far beyond our understanding. The Timeless Abyss is what's left of their struggle. The energies here are incredibly dangerous. We have to stay focused."
The further they went, the more distorted the landscape became. Strange, translucent structures rose from the ground, twisting and curling like ancient ruins suspended in time. They passed objects that appeared frozen in mid-motion: a bird made of light caught in a perpetual loop of flight, a tree whose branches waved as if caught in a wind that didn't exist.
"Everything here is stuck between moments," Edward said as they walked past a cracked mirror that reflected dozens of versions of themselves, each one slightly different.
Aran, growing increasingly unnerved, glanced at Edward. "How do you even know all this? You talk about this place like you've been here before."
Edward hesitated, his gaze shifting away. "I've studied it… in theory. The Timeless Abyss is part of the old mage texts—stories of how the first Archmages sought power from the realm between realms. It's dangerous, yes, but it's also the key to immense knowledge."
"Knowledge," Lyssa echoed, "or madness?"
"Both, probably," Edward admitted, a wry smile on his lips.
They walked in silence for a time after that, their footsteps echoing strangely in the void. The further they went, the more the landscape seemed to unravel. At one point, they saw a jagged cliff that stretched upward into the sky, only to twist back around on itself, like a loop of time caught in an endless cycle. Strange shapes moved in the distance, shifting and reforming with each passing second, defying any attempt to understand them.
"We're getting close," Edward said, stopping suddenly. His eyes focused on a point ahead of them where the void seemed to pulse with a dark light.
Lyssa drew her sword, the blade glinting with an eerie glow in the strange atmosphere. "I don't like this. It feels like we're being watched."
Aran looked around nervously. "Watched by who? There's nothing here but… whatever this is."
"That's what worries me," Lyssa replied. "In a place like this, you don't need eyes to be seen."
Edward frowned but said nothing. He felt it too—the growing sense of dread, the feeling that something was lurking just beyond their perception.
They continued toward the dark pulsing light, the tension thick in the air. As they neared, the landscape seemed to shift more violently, as if reality itself was fraying. The ground beneath them cracked, and strange figures appeared in the distance—humanoid shapes, flickering like ghosts, their movements erratic and unsettling.
"Those aren't real," Edward said, his voice tight. "They're echoes of the past—remnants of the battle that created this place. Don't engage them."
But the figures grew more distinct as they approached, their hollow eyes turning toward the group. One of them—a tall figure in armor, its face obscured by shadow—raised its arm, pointing directly at them.
Lyssa's grip tightened on her sword. "That's a little too real for me."
Edward stepped forward, raising his hands. "We mean no harm. We're just passing through—"
Before he could finish, the figure let out a bone-chilling scream, and the echoes began to rush toward them.
"Run!" Edward shouted, grabbing Aran and pulling him forward.
Lyssa sprinted beside them, her sword drawn, ready to fight if necessary. The echoes swarmed around them, their hollow voices wailing as they closed in.
The trio dashed forward, heading for the dark light of the Heart of the Abyss, their only hope of survival.
As they neared the pulsing glow, Edward reached out with his magic, feeling the immense power radiating from it. "We're almost there! Hold on!"
Just as the echoes were about to overtake them, they reached the center of the dark light. Edward threw up a barrier, and the world around them exploded with energy.
For a brief moment, everything went white.
Then, as the light faded, they found themselves standing in the heart of the Timeless Abyss, the echoes gone, the dark light pulsing softly in front of them. The Heart of the Abyss was within reach.
But so was the danger they had feared.
