Chereads / Shadow's Gambit / Chapter 186 - 186. The Test of Stars

Chapter 186 - 186. The Test of Stars

The figure of cosmic energy stood before Aran, Edward, and Lyssa, its glowing form shimmering like a constellation brought to life. The air around them thrummed with an intense pressure, as though the universe itself was holding its breath, waiting to see if they would pass the test.

"Prepare yourselves," the voice echoed again, its deep tone reverberating through the infinite void. "The truth is not easily granted."

The figure raised its hand, and the stars above began to move. What had been a beautiful, tranquil display of galaxies and nebulas now turned into something far more menacing. Stars shot through the void like falling meteors, their trails of light illuminating the endless darkness as they hurtled toward the trio.

"Incoming!" Lyssa shouted, unsheathing her sword in a swift motion. Her eyes flickered with determination as she leapt into action.

Aran reacted just as quickly, his instincts honed from countless battles. He drew his sword and raised it above his head, the blade glowing faintly with the magic he channeled into it. He had no idea what these falling stars were made of, but he could feel their immense power bearing down on them.

Edward, always the scholar, muttered under his breath as he summoned a barrier of shimmering blue energy around them. "I don't know how long this will hold!" he warned, his eyes wide with concentration. The stars crashed into the barrier, sending shockwaves through the ground beneath their feet. The impact was like nothing Aran had ever felt before. The force alone was enough to shake the platform, as if the very fabric of reality was being tested alongside them.

The cosmic figure watched silently, its glowing eyes observing their every move. This was no ordinary battle—this was a test of their resolve, their strength, and perhaps their worthiness to uncover the secrets of the universe.

"Edward, can you pinpoint the source of the figure's power?" Aran shouted over the roar of the colliding stars.

Edward's eyes darted between the figure and the descending stars, his face contorted in thought. "It's not about the figure's power! The stars… they're connected to the fabric of space-time itself! We need to disrupt the flow!"

"How do we do that?" Lyssa demanded, deflecting one of the smaller stars that managed to breach the barrier. The impact sent a wave of force through her arm, but she held her ground, gritting her teeth.

Edward's hands moved in quick, practiced motions, tracing arcane symbols in the air. "We have to alter the resonance! Everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency. If we match the stars' frequency—"

"No time for theories!" Aran shouted. A massive star, burning with a deep violet hue, was bearing down on them, faster than the others. Without hesitation, he channeled all his strength into his blade and swung it with all his might. The sword connected with the star, and the resulting explosion sent ripples of energy through the void. Aran was thrown backward, but the star had been diverted, hurtling off into the darkness.

Edward's eyes lit up with realization. "That's it! We can't destroy them head-on, but we can redirect their energy!"

Lyssa flashed a grim smile, her sword glowing with an aura of power. "Well, that's something I can work with."

She launched herself into the air, her sword spinning as she intercepted another star. The force of the impact sent sparks flying, but with a swift motion, she deflected the star away from the group, sending it spiraling off into the distance. Aran quickly followed her lead, swinging his sword with precision to intercept another falling star.

"We're getting the hang of this," Aran said, his voice tight with concentration. "But how long do we have to keep it up?"

Edward's face darkened. "I don't know. This could go on forever unless we can pass whatever test the figure is putting us through."

The cosmic figure remained silent, its stardust form shifting subtly as it watched them. Aran could feel the weight of its gaze, as though it was measuring their every movement, their every decision.

Suddenly, the figure raised its other hand, and the stars stopped falling. For a brief moment, there was silence—an eerie calm in the vastness of space.

"Your strength is commendable," the voice echoed once more, the figure's glowing eyes flickering with an ethereal light. "But strength alone is not enough to uncover the truth."

Aran tensed, his grip tightening on his sword. "What now?"

The figure's form shifted, and the stars around them began to swirl, forming intricate patterns in the air. "You must answer this question: What is the nature of truth?"

Edward stepped forward, his brow furrowed in thought. "The nature of truth… is it knowledge? Understanding the universe and its laws?"

The figure did not respond immediately. Its glowing eyes focused on Edward, as though weighing his words.

Lyssa spoke next, her voice low but firm. "Truth is about power. Only those strong enough to claim it can understand it."

Again, the figure remained silent, its gaze now shifting to Aran.

Aran's mind raced. He thought back to everything they had been through—the battles, the trials, the sacrifices. What was the nature of truth? He had always believed that truth was something to be earned through struggle, but now, standing here before this cosmic entity, he wasn't so sure.

"Truth…" Aran began, his voice steady, "is perspective. It's not just about knowledge or power. It's about understanding that what we perceive as truth can change, depending on where we stand. The universe is vast, and the truth isn't a single, immutable thing. It's something we have to constantly seek, constantly question."

The figure's eyes flashed with a brilliant light, and the stars above them seemed to pulse in response. "Perspective," the voice echoed. "A wise answer."

The platform beneath them began to shift, the light around them intensifying. The cosmic figure's form dissolved into a cascade of stardust, swirling around them in a dazzling display.

"You have passed the test," the voice said, now distant but still resonant. "The truth is yours to seek, but be warned—what you find may not be what you expect."

As the last of the figure's form faded, the stars began to realign, creating a pathway through the void. At the end of the path, a portal of shimmering light appeared, pulsing with cosmic energy.

Aran sheathed his sword, his heart still racing from the encounter. "We're not done yet," he muttered.

Edward adjusted his glasses, his expression a mixture of relief and curiosity. "No, we're not. But we're one step closer."

Lyssa sighed, sheathing her sword as well. "Let's hope whatever's next is a little less... explosive."

Without another word, the trio stepped onto the path of stars, heading toward the portal that awaited them at the end.

The journey was far from over, but they had taken a crucial step toward uncovering the ultimate truth.
