Chereads / Shadow's Gambit / Chapter 187 - 187. Beyond the Portal

Chapter 187 - 187. Beyond the Portal

The starlit path pulsed with cosmic energy as Aran, Lyssa, and Edward walked toward the shimmering portal ahead. The vast expanse of space stretched around them, the stars twinkling like distant eyes, watching their every move. The portal itself was an intricate vortex of light and shadow, swirling with colors beyond comprehension, pulling at the edges of reality.

"This doesn't feel right," Lyssa muttered, her eyes narrowing as she examined the portal. Her instincts, honed through years of battle, were screaming at her to stop. "There's something off about that portal."

Aran felt it too, an unsettling hum in the air, a tension in the very fabric of space around them. He gripped the hilt of his sword tighter, his senses on high alert. "It's a test. Everything here is designed to push us beyond our limits."

Edward adjusted his glasses, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. "Or it's more than that. This place… it's not just a test. It's a gateway to something much larger, something ancient."

They were only steps away from the portal now. The closer they got, the more intense the pull became, as though the vortex was drawing them in, seeking to devour them. Aran paused for a moment, staring into the swirling depths. There was something there, deep inside the portal—an energy, a force that was neither malevolent nor benevolent. It simply existed, waiting.

"We can't turn back now," Aran said, his voice resolute. He had come too far, sacrificed too much to stop here. "Whatever lies beyond, we'll face it together."

Lyssa sighed but nodded, her hand resting on her sword hilt. "Let's hope you're right."

Edward stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the portal's core. "I believe what we're looking for lies on the other side. Knowledge, power… the truth."

Without another word, the three of them stepped through the portal.

The sensation of crossing the threshold was unlike anything Aran had ever experienced. For a brief moment, it felt as though his body was being pulled apart, his essence scattered across the cosmos. But then, just as suddenly, everything snapped back into place, and they found themselves standing in a new world.

The first thing Aran noticed was the silence. It was profound, a quiet so deep it was almost oppressive. The air around them was thick with a strange energy, a mix of magic and something far more ancient, something primal. The sky overhead was dark, not with night but with an inky blackness that seemed to absorb all light. There were no stars here, no moons, only a vast emptiness above.

They stood on a floating island, surrounded by other islands drifting through the void. Bridges of light connected some of the islands, while others were isolated, their surfaces covered in strange, glowing glyphs. At the center of the island was a massive structure—a towering obelisk made of shimmering crystal, pulsating with a slow, rhythmic light.

"This place…" Edward whispered, his voice filled with awe. "It's… it's ancient."

Lyssa's hand was already on her sword, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "I don't like it. It feels too… still."

Aran's gaze was fixed on the obelisk. He could feel its energy pulsing in time with his own heartbeat, drawing him closer. "That's where we need to go."

As they approached the obelisk, a voice echoed in the air around them. It was deep and resonant, filled with authority and ancient knowledge.

"You seek the truth."

The voice seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. Aran stopped, his eyes narrowing. "We do."

The air shimmered before them, and a figure materialized. Unlike the cosmic figure they had encountered before, this one was solid, its form towering over them. It was humanoid but with features that were alien—its skin a dark, swirling mist, its eyes glowing like burning embers.

"I am the Guardian of the Eternal Truth," the figure said, its voice reverberating through the ground beneath them. "You have come far, but the truth you seek is not for the unworthy."

"We've passed every test so far," Aran said, his voice steady. "We've proven ourselves."

The Guardian's glowing eyes focused on him. "Strength, wisdom, and resolve are the keys to unlocking the path, but there is one final truth that must be accepted."

Edward stepped forward, his curiosity piqued. "What is this final truth?"

The Guardian extended a hand, and the air between them shimmered. Images began to form—worlds, galaxies, the very fabric of the universe itself. "The truth you seek is not a single answer. It is the understanding that all things are connected. Every action, every choice ripples through the cosmos, shaping the future. The truth is not about knowledge or power—it is about balance."

Aran frowned. "Balance?"

The Guardian nodded slowly. "The universe is a delicate balance of forces. To tip the scales in any one direction leads to destruction. To uncover the ultimate truth, you must understand this balance and accept the responsibility that comes with it."

Lyssa crossed her arms, her expression skeptical. "So, what? We're supposed to keep everything in check?"

The Guardian's eyes glowed brighter. "Yes. The knowledge you seek can change the universe, but it can also unravel it. The power to reshape reality comes with the responsibility to maintain the balance."

Aran's mind raced. He had been prepared to face trials of strength, tests of intellect, but this—this was something different. It was a responsibility, a burden far greater than he had anticipated.

Edward's eyes gleamed with understanding. "It's not just about finding the truth. It's about becoming a part of it."

The Guardian stepped back, its form starting to dissolve into the air. "You must choose. Will you accept the burden of the truth, or will you walk away?"

Aran looked at Lyssa and Edward. They had come this far together, faced impossible odds, and uncovered secrets that most could only dream of. But this—this was a decision that would change everything.

Lyssa met his gaze, her expression resolute. "Whatever you choose, I'm with you."

Edward nodded in agreement. "The truth has always been my pursuit. I'm ready to accept it."

Aran took a deep breath, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "We accept the truth. We'll maintain the balance."

The Guardian's form flickered one last time before it vanished, its voice echoing in the void.

"Then your journey begins anew."
