Chapter 9 - Humanity

[Avdira, surveillance room.]

In a room filled with computers and people watching computer screens, a sudden warning symbol flashes on the screen. Making the crowd present in the room focus their attention on the warning, which read...

"Disturbance Detected in Wasteland 7.11"

Upon seeing this warning, a message is sent to an office where a person sitting in front of a desk, possibly an office, has to make a decision regarding the action regarding the disturbance.

The person is talking on a phone, where we can hear some words from it.

person on the phone: Jenkins... you... bear with...

Jenkins: Ok, I can take care of it. I will not make a mistake when I am about to have a promotion and leave this waste management department.

Person on the phone: mm...

Jenkins puts the phone on the table and proceeds to take a deep breath. and continues to deal with the massive hill of files on his table when he comes across a message. With the title

"Action required -- W-7.11"

Jenkins, without thinking too much, reads through the file, then grants permission and orders a group of personnel to take care of the disturbance, thinking it's just some mutant that emerged recently.

Unknown to him, this is the start of a mystery to all the humanity that would plague them in the years yet to come.

[the wasteland city. now W-7.11.....]

The trio, Luna, Horvath, and Nexus, ride their cars to the commercial area, starting to get ready to search for any hidden weapons and supplies that may help them in their journey to the outside world.

Luna: Get ready; we will go into the street on foot. can't attract monsters and mutates. They are a major headache.

Nexus: humm.

Horvath: Be careful of the traps; some survivors lay them and forget to remove them. And also watch out for insect beasts. They are more dangerous than they look.

The trio searched through the abandoned street, their footsteps echoing off crumbling buildings and stalls. The once-thriving street, filled with crowds, now lay in ruins, a symbol of the destruction of war that had ravaged the world.

Ash-gray skies cover the city, casting dark shadows over the desolate landscape. The air smelled of decay and smoke.

Luna led the group, her weapon (a dagger) at the ready. Beside her, Nexus scanned their surroundings, his eyes darting between shattered windows and alleys. Alert of any possible dangers that may cause damage to their mission.

Horvath walks behind, his gaze fixed on the ground, scanning for hidden dangers.

Their mission: scavenge for weapons and supplies.

As they explored, the silence grew oppressive, broken only by the creaking of metal and the occasional roar of a creature in a distance, reminding them that they are not alone. They have to remain alert, even with no danger in sight.

Luna halted, her gaze locked onto a broken store.

walking towards the store Luna calls to both of them, going inside.

Luna: Found a granary; lets go inside.

Nexus moves forward, towards the door, to check for any dangers or traps near the door.

Nexus nodded, his hand on the door handle.

Horvath: Is it okay, Nexus?

Nexus pushes open the door while nodding to Horvath. Signaling there is no danger... for now.

Luna and Horvath walk forward, following Nexus into the granary, ready to search for supplies.

Inside, the store was dirty with dust and cobwebs spread everywhere. Shelves lay bare, except for junk and spoiled, musty grains.

A doubt ran through Luna's mind.

Luna: Looks like we are not the first to come here.

Horvath: There are no footprints or any signs of humans.

Luna: We are late anyways; we should go and check other stores; maybe we can go and check other stores.

Luna and the gang continue to advance into the street. When they suddenly start to hear a banging sound under their feet. The sound starts to intensify as the manhole covers start to jump in place, maybe due to pressure or something pushing against the sewer walls. Displacing the metal caps on the manhole.

When suddenly all the manhole covers are pushed from their places and water starts to gush out from the manholes.

Nexus squints his eyes, observing the water for any animals that may pose danger for them. When suddenly he hears Luna say...

Luna: Frogs.

Horvath: What a

when he is suddenly cut off by a huge sound. like the cracking of land.

|boom... crack... |

Debris flies everywhere; dust kicks up. Spreading everywhere, obstructing their vision.

Horvath starts to punch the rubble that comes his way, blasting them to pieces.

While Nexus jumps nimbly near Luna and wraps his arms around her waist, jumping onto high ground to observe what has caused this disaster while getting ready to bring Horvath to the High Grounds as well.

When he hears Luna mutter shakily.

Luna: A. Fucking giant frog.

When Nexus turns to the place Luna is observing. Standing in the distance is a frog, 2 stories high, with saliva and blood dripping from its mouth. With two small holes that are as big as a human head above it's eyes. Observing Horvath and them from above.

Obviously as prey, to which Nexus starts to feel something new. Anger? Doubt? FEAR? or perhaps... excitement!!!

{HORVATH P.O.V}

Horvath continues to break the rubble that comes his way. Sometimes deflecting or dodging pieces that are huge to destroy. when he sees himself in a shadow, prompting him to see forward where he sees a giant frog, eying him and his friends (obviously).

Nexus (thinking): Now that cat bastard should start running instead of rushing to fight with that thing.

When he suddenly sees Luna jumping down to him, Nexus starts rushing once again at the enemy. When he hears Luna say...

Luna: Come on, we are going to help him take down that frog.

Horvath (shouting): Why are we fighting it? Aren't we here for supplies?

when he hears Luna say... dumbfounded.

Luna: I... don't know. He just rushed in.

Horvath starts to run in front, who, after coming to her senses, starts following him.

Horvath (murmurs): Damn... cat bastard.

{end of P.O.V.}

Nexus charged forward, his blade flashing in the dim light. Beside him, Luna darted with silent precision, her daggers poised.

Horvath ran in the ruins, fishing out a great axe from his bag in the process, his massive great axe at the ready.

Their target: a colossal frog-like creature, its skin a mass of warty, venomous growths, towering two stories high.

Nexus, rushing forward, jumps to the side, avoiding the frog's massive, snapping jaws.

Luna sprinted toward the creature's legs, using the damaged terrain to her advantage. She leapt onto the frog's scaled calves, climbing with an assassin's agility.

Horvath swung his great axe in mighty arcs, targeting the frog's bulky body.

The frog's toxic blood spread around their fight from the wounds, narrowly missing Horvath's massive figure in a second.

Horvath: Watch the blood from being sprayed on you; it appears toxic.

Watching the blood spill on the ground sizzle and evaporate.

To which both Luna and Nexus nod slightly.

Nexus leapt, avoiding a spray of venomous blood that the frog sprayed from the holes above it's eyes. His blade sliced through the air, biting deep into the frog's thigh, making it flinch in pain.

Luna jumped on the frog's back, running along its spine. reaching the frog's head, dodging its eyes, looking around, and sneaking past them.

She plunged her daggers into the creature's ears, seeking vulnerable nerve endings that cause more damage to the frog.

Making it thrash around in agony. Its screams shake the rubble and scare away any animal that came near them due to the bloody smell.

As the creature thrashed around, Luna clung to its head, using her dagger inserted into the frog's head to maintain her perch.

In pain, the creature used its tongue to attack Horvath, which he caught and pulled it down, making the creature bend down in pain and start to pull its tongue into its mouth.

When Horvath shouted..

Horvath: Nexus!!!!

Nexus jumped from an exposed railing, gaining momentum.

And delivering precise, swift strikes, targeting the creature's exposed neck.

Luna seized the moment, driving her daggers deep into the frog's brain.

Making the frog scream in pain both from the dagger inserted and grinding his brain.

And the injury on its neck, splitting its head nearly in half and separating it from its spine.

The creature thrashed around in pain.

Howling

spewing toxic blood everywhere and melting the surrounding buildings and trees.

Nexus: Retreat!!

The trio jumped away from the frog, avoiding the blood sprayed by it.

Breathless, they watched the frog's corpse dissolve into a puddle of noxious fluid in its own blood.

Horvath patted both Nexus and Luna on their backs.

Horvath: well fought. This makes me assured to leave Luna in your hands when I am not around.

Luna nods.

Luna: We make a good team.

and continues to wipe her dagger clean.

As they departed the destroyed street, the air seemed to thicken with unseen dangers.

With Nexus surveying the surroundings with a cold gaze.

Thinking about the dangers they may face ahead.
