The warm night air clung to my skin, but it wasn't enough to calm the nervous energy coursing through me.
I crouched low behind the thick hedge, careful not to make a sound as I strained to catch every word of the conversation between Bruno and Mr. Alfonzo.
My heart pounded against my ribs, fear creeping in at the possibility of being caught. Yet, curiosity held me rooted to the spot.
I knew how disastrous it would be if i was discovered by either of them but that didn't deter me from the task at hand.
It was much more important than any fear that I was feeling.
Besides, I couldn't stop listening.
"...humiliated your mother in front of Maria," Mr. Alfonzo was saying, his voice stern yet tinged with something softer—concern, perhaps. "Do you think that was wise? Or necessary?"
"She had it coming," Bruno replied, his tone clipped.
