Chapter 26 - Ch 26. Research, Research, Research

Sitting at the reception desk, Alex couldn't help but feel the weight of the history he had just uncovered. The tales of the Kanto-Johto War, the strategic brilliance of leaders, and the sacrifices made were more than just stories—they were a testament to the resilience and complexity of this world.

Leaning back in his chair, he reflected on the enormity of the war and the sacrifices made by both sides. He felt a mix of awe and sorrow for the fallen, realizing how these events have shaped the world he now lives in. The involvement of figures like Professor Oak, Giovanni, Drasion, and the legendary Pokémon, added a layer of reverence. Alex wondered how much of this history he would encounter on his journey and how it might influence his path.

Determined to learn more, Alex navigated back to the computer, his curiosity piqued. He began typing queries about how the current Pokémon world differed from the one he knew from the games and anime. To his surprise, he discovered that the year was 2024, and the war had taken place 23 years ago.

Diving into the geography and layout, he realized he was on a planet called Terrera. Comparing detailed online maps with the mental maps from his gaming days, he noticed significant differences. Route 24 had an extension, and there were entirely new towns. Delving deeper, he learned about various regions, including Orre and Fiore, as well as several still unnamed and yet to be explored. His astonishment grew as he read that only 30% of the planet's land mass was human-inhabited and explored, with the rest still under exploration.

He marvelled at the familiar regions:

- Kanto, the starting point for many trainers;

- Johto, renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage;

- Hoenn, with its diverse environments;

- Sinnoh, celebrated for its mythology and legends;

- Unova, a blend of urban and natural settings.

- Kalos, inspired by French culture

- Alola, with its tropical islands

- Galar, influenced by British culture

- Paldea, known for its vibrant landscapes.

Regions like Orre, rugged and challenging, and Fiore, with its strong emphasis on the bond between Pokémon Rangers and wild Pokémon, further expanded the world's diversity.

Delving into Pokémon behaviour and ecology, Alex was fascinated by academic papers and journals detailing how Pokémon interacted with their environment, their social structures, and their roles in society. "So, Bulbasaur have a unique migratory pattern in this world? And Pidgeys are more social than I realized." An interactive online encyclopedia offered him in-depth studies on the social structures of Beedrills. "This can come in handy if I encounter one in the wild."

Exploring technological advancements, Alex discovered that Pokémon Centers, communication devices, and transportation systems were more advanced and integrated than he had imagined. "The Magnet Train now connects to Hoenn and Sinnoh? That could be a game-changer for long-distance travel," he noted, realizing how much more interconnected this world was. He was particularly impressed by the advanced features of the PokéNav. "Real-time battle stats, deeper Pokémon data, and even a built-in translator for certain Pokémon languages. I had no idea it could do this much." On looking up its price, it turned out to be around 50,000 ₽. He vowed to buy one for himself when he was capable of doing so.

Throughout his research, Alex occasionally assisted trainers at the reception desk, striking up conversations that were both enlightening and engaging. "Oh, an injured Pidgey? Let's get it taken care of," he said, guiding a worried trainer through the process. Each interaction offered him a wealth of insights, as trainers shared their unique perspectives on Pokémon training and the storied history of their world. One particularly enthusiastic trainer regaled Alex with tales of the recent festival in Viridian City, celebrating Celebi, the guardian of the forest and protector of time. The legends and mysteries surrounding Celebi were known among trainers, though very few had ever seen it. The excitement in the trainer's voice sparked a keen interest in Alex, making him eager to attend the festival next year.

Time passed by as he continued to research. It was almost midnight when Alex stumbled upon a mention of Project Eclipse in an archived article. It provided hints but no clear answers, deepening the mysteries he was keen to solve. Determined to uncover more, he decided to dig deeper into Project Eclipse. As he tried to access restricted forums and articles, the computer screen flickered, and an unexpected message appeared: "Unauthorized Access Attempt Detected."

Alex's heart raced. He quickly tried to close the window, but it was too late. The phone at the reception desk rang, the caller ID displaying a familiar name: Professor Oak. Trying to stay calm, Alex answered the phone. "Hello, this is the Viridian City Pokémon Center."

"Alex?" Professor Oak's voice was calm. "I believe someone accessed an unauthorized file. Was it you?"

Alex felt a knot tighten in his stomach, took a deep breath and replied, "Yes, Professor Oak, it was me."
