Chapter 6 - THE EXCHANGE

She'd hit him hard, altering the scared bead on which his strength relied; The Lunar bead. With the punch landing on his chest, the lunar bead, a small, blue marble which glowed brightly at the reflection of the rays of the moonlight, dislodged out of his chest. In a slight second, the ticking of time stopped, and the waves of tree leaves and the dripping of water drops which fell from the moist leaves seized, giving way for the marble to find its way into her through her mouth. At the movement of the water drops, she fell hard to the ground, not seeing the mystical exchange which had just happened, as it wasn't a physical occurrence. Neither did she realize that she now had something divine in her. He also didn't notice at that moment that something had left him nor did he see the exchange.

He had held still his feet to the ground, and his upper body slightly bent, avoiding him from falling along with her. He stood up straight leaving her on the ground as he began walking away.

"Ouch," Nichole exclaimed, patting her now swollen leg in pain. She tried to stand up but fell back to the ground as soon as she stood as the pain in her leg got worse. "Come on," she said, more frustrated this time.

Kyle paid no attention to her lament, walking calmly away from her. She'd expected him to come help out seeing that she had twisted her ankle while she ran to meet him, but he didn't and she was disappointed. She wished she did not need to ask for help from a random stranger who she'd just met a few minutes ago and who wasn't nice, to begin with, but she had no choice now that she couldn't walk.

"Help" she mumbled, too ashamed to speak louder and hoping he heard her.

He moved further because she wasn't audible enough making him unable to hear her.

"Pls help me" she projected.

He paused, regretting that he had come to help her earlier, when he should have just minded his business and watched as the werewolf devoured her, tearing her apart like a piece of paper. She didn't even appreciate his help earlier, which made him disgusted at her.

Having lived with humans all his life, he didn't associate himself closely with any even though he had human blood running through his veins. He had always isolated himself right from when he was young. He just watched them as a way of entertaining himself at night in solitude and avoided them as much as he could in the daytime. He knew humans to be ungrateful people who only used people for their benefit and he hated that which was why held didn't pay attention to their business. Now he was placed the responsibility of getting her out of the forest safely.

He turned and walked towards her pissed, scoffed, and then picked her up from the ground like she was a child. She held his neck tight, scared not to fall.

Ashamed to her feet, she bent her head over to his chest, clipping her eyes tight as they walked.

She saw no need for him carrying her. She'd preferred he assisted her in walking instead, but she couldn't object because she needed all the help she could get to get away from the forest safely. He seemed like a pervert to her and she'd hoped he wasn't more danger to her than the beast was.

"He appears to know the parts of the forest which I have no clue of, and that's a plus for me. But then I wouldn't have twisted my angle if he had just waited for me from the beginning or had not come to the woods and attracted the beast" she conversed within herself, giving different facial reactions as they walked.

"Now she was leaving without Stella who she had risked her life to save. And being carried by a total stranger, a rude one at that." She hated it all.

The night was silent, echoing only the chirping of night birds and the tweeting of cricket. Moonlight filtered through the canopy above casting a vertical shadow on the forest floor lightening the parts as they walked. He paced softly making no sounds with his feet.

"I'm fine now." Nichole tried to sound confident hoping that she was actually fine now and wouldn't need his help again, but her voice betrayed her. She was still in so much pain.

He didn't respond to her but kept on walking. He wasn't going to let her slow him down for any reason so he carried her patiently although feeling uncomfortable. The scenario drew his mind back to many years ago when his mother was being carried by his foster father after being beaten up by hunters when she'd transformed. They had claimed she'd attacked them, which he knew wasn't true, but she was a beast after all and was meant to be killed by the hunters, they claimed. Rumours about a beast in the forest spread across the village where they stayed making them flee the village for their lives. He had lived in hiding right from that time and was forced to conceal his powers in other to blend with the human world. Although he had schooled with humans and even worked with them, they never suspected him as he did a good job of disguising himself as a full human. Many admired his grey hair and silver colour eyeballs concluding he had a very good fashion sense, while others admired his height, good looks, broad shoulders and intimidating demeanour. He was perfect unless he was only half a human.

"I'll find my way from here. Thanks for your help" Nichole said pulling his mind back in time. She was more sincere this time as his help now meant a lot to her. Although she didn't come back with Stella, coming back alive wouldn't have been possible without his help and she'd thought about it will they walked. She had seen the city lights from a distance and knew she could find her way from the edge of the forest which they had already reached.

He set her down, and she tested her weight on her angle. It still hurt, but she could walk better now.

" Thanks again. Have a good night" Nichole smiled waiting for his response. He put on his hood cap and began walking towards the opposite direction ignoring her once again.

She smirked, more pissed than when he had first appeared. One would have thought he was mute if he hadn't whispered earlier on.
