Chapter 12 - 11: The Wendigo I

-{Blackwater Ridge}-

After talking to the local ranger and being handed a camping pass for the Ridge, Soren had become greatly pleased. Even with his Inventory full of his Hunter Gear (the ones from Bloodborne) and his wand at the ready in case of sudden Wendigo attacks, there seemed to be hardly anything he could not be ready for.

Unironically, the very ranger who allowed him to go camping in the Ridge just so happened to be Ranger Wilkinson. Whether that is because of fate having a laugh or Death itself being amused, he had no idea.

Anyways, Soren began to venture up the trail just as he heard a very familiar roar of an engine coming up the road towards the ranger station. Fortunately for him, his secretive fanboying over hearing in-person the very same engine of Dean Winchester's 1967 black Chevy Impala--which had been affectionately called "Baby" by both Dean and the fanbase--was not seen nor heard by the boys.

While he would have enjoyed the thought of sticking around to hear Dean Winchester's excuses for intruding upon Blackwater Ridge, Soren knew now that the second episode's plot was soon going to begin within two days' time. Soon, the boys will encounter Haley Collins and their unfortunate guide/bear hunter Roy tomorrow morning.

That alone was making Soren's attempts to find a plausible campsite within range of the Wendigo's hunting grounds become more difficult. He did not desire to have too many casualties aside from the canonical ones--thus avoiding Chuck's direct gaze--and wanted to end that creature himself in order to appease the blood in his veins.

Soon enough, night began to fall just as Soren found a decent little campsite just out of sight of Tommy's former site. With day giving way to night in Blackwater and a Wendigo soon to be on the prowl for food, Soren wasted no time in pulling out his wand and casting protective charms.

"Protego Maxima," Soren muttered softly as a soft shimmer of energy began to encircle his campsite of roughly 20 feet in diameter. Then he added another protective spell to layer itself upon the shielding charm. "Protego Diabolica."

While the latter spell Protego Diabolica was not taught at Hogwarts back in the 1800's to the best of Soren's knowledge, he wouldn't be a fool for not watching the Fantastic Beasts movies that were set before the main Potter story. He knew that this spell used by Gellert Grindelwald in his underground speech to convince fellow witches and wizards held amazing potential to scare off the Wendigo just as much as the Anasazi symbols did.

As the two Protego spells layered themselves on top of each other, Soren felt something happen inside of his little encampment. Turning around towards the center of the camp, he saw an old Victorian-era lamp appear.

For those like Soren who played Bloodborne, this lamp was the very one used by Hunters in Yharnam to return from the Hunter's Dream after they respawn. Smirking a bit from noticing this very lamp appear in his encampment, he touched it to make it light up.

You have activated the Hunter's Lamp. You can now return to Blackwater Ridge from the Dream at any time.

After reading the notification that appeared in his vision, Soren smiled softly. This meant he could effectively return here if need be to hunt down the Wendigo. Not to mention it was very helpful to him if he died by the Wendigo attack like Roy.

A cold shiver went down Soren's spine as he remembered all of the close calls with Death he had back in his original world.

While he stayed within the encampment and began to retrieve what would be his dinner for the night, he felt that cold starving look of that Wendigo on him. Fortunately for Soren, his forethought of putting up protective charms was not bad at all since it seemed like the Protego Diabolica spell made the Wendigo hesitate to pounce on him.

This very night would lead to be a most comfortable one as Soren would be patient and wait for daytime when the Winchester boys would soon come. After all, he survived the end of his world for over twenty years and held the power of Bloodborne's Old Ones.

He can afford to be patient and watch the spectacle of a Wendigo unable to catch its prey when it is "out in the open."
