Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Path to level 3

The first rays of dawn filtered through the trees, casting a golden hue over the Valerian camp. The tension in the air was thick, and every soldier moved with a sense of purpose, knowing the next battle could determine the fate of their people. Lukas, however, felt something more pressing tugging at his mind—an overwhelming sense that his next steps would shape not only the war but his own growth.

The system had been feeding him insights, whispers of power yet to be unlocked. His thoughts were filled with fragments of strategies, combat techniques, and knowledge he hadn't previously possessed. But it all felt incomplete. As much as the Ether Awakening had opened doors, there were others still tightly shut.

He stepped out of his tent, the morning air cool on his skin. His mind was restless, and the memories of the shadowed figure from the previous mission clung to him like a dark cloud. Yet something else stirred within him—a sense that his growth wasn't yet where it needed to be.

Suddenly, a familiar ping echoed in his mind, pulling his attention inward.

[System Alert: New Quest Unlocked]

Objective: Reach Ether Awakening Level 3.

Reward: Ether Knowledge Integration, Enhanced Learning Abilities, and Ether Absorption Boost.

Lukas's heart quickened. The system was clear: before he could unlock the full potential of the Ether Knowledge and gain the ability to learn at a heightened speed, he needed to push himself further. Level 3 wasn't just about becoming stronger; it was about evolving in ways that would change how he approached every fight, and every challenge.

[Quest Details:]

Ether Awakening Level 3 requires the accumulation of sufficient Ether through combat, training, and exploration of high-Ether zones. Complete battles, explore new areas, and uncover hidden sources of Ether to progress further.

"Great," Lukas muttered under his breath. He'd expected more fighting, but the added element of exploration intrigued him. There were pockets of the world rich in Ether, places where his growth could be accelerated, if only he could find them.

Lukas found Zane near the training grounds, already going through his morning exercises. Despite the intensity of the past few days, Zane never missed a chance to train, sharpening his skills and his body with the same determination Lukas admired.

"You're up early," Zane remarked, wiping sweat from his brow. "What's on your mind?"

Lukas looked around cautiously before stepping closer. "The system gave me a quest. I need to reach Ether Awakening Level 3 before I can unlock some of its more advanced functions."

Zane raised an eyebrow. "More advanced than what you've already got? This system of yours is starting to sound pretty impressive."

"It's more than that," Lukas said, his voice low. "Once I hit Level 3, I'll be able to access something called 'Ether Knowledge,' which will speed up how fast I learn things—combat techniques, strategy, even crafting skills. And there's something else: items or places that could help me absorb Ether faster."

Zane whistled softly. "That explains why you've been on edge. You're close to something big, huh?"

"Yeah," Lukas admitted, running a hand through his hair. "But the system's pushing me to find these Ether-rich zones. The battlefield isn't the only place I can level up. There are hidden areas out there, places I need to find if I'm going to progress faster."

Zane leaned back, crossing his arms. "So what's the plan?"

Lukas considered for a moment, then nodded toward the horizon. "I need to explore. There are places in this kingdom—and beyond—that have been forgotten, places filled with untapped Ether. I'll need to seek them out."

Zane's grin returned. "You know I'm with you. But first, we've got a battle to win."

The camp was alive with preparation. Kalen stood at the center, speaking with Captain Thorn and several of the other officers. Aurelia, her fierce eyes gleaming with determination, was overseeing the deployment of troops. The morning sun had risen higher, and the time for action was drawing near.

As Lukas approached the command tent, he caught Aurelia's gaze. Her expression was calm, but he could see the tension in her stance. "Ready?" she asked.

Lukas nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be. But there's something I need to do after this battle—something that'll make me stronger."

Aurelia tilted her head slightly, curious but reserved. "Stronger? You've already proven yourself, Lukas. What more do you need?"

Lukas's jaw tightened. He couldn't explain the system to her, but he knew he had to push himself beyond what anyone expected of him. "There's always room to grow. And I intend to make sure I'm ready for whatever comes next."

Aurelia didn't argue. She simply nodded, a faint smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Good. We'll need every bit of strength we can get."

The battle came swiftly, the Drevyn forces pushing hard against the Valerian defenses. Swords clashed, arrows flew through the air, and the ground trembled with the weight of hundreds of soldiers charging into the fray. Lukas fought with renewed vigor, each swing of his saber guided by the Ether flowing within him.

The system was a constant presence, highlighting weak points in his enemies, guiding his strikes, and feeding him tactical insights that made him faster, sharper. But the real progress came with every enemy he cut down—he could feel the Ether accumulating, his body absorbing it with every victory.

[Ether Absorption: 50% toward Level 3]

Lukas's heart raced as the progress bar in his mind moved forward. He could feel it—the power surging within him, his abilities growing stronger with each passing moment.

But the battle wasn't without its challenges. The Drevyns had brought their own elites to the field, warriors skilled in dark magic and brutal combat. One of them, a tall man clad in dark armor, came at Lukas with a massive axe, his movements heavy but deliberate.

Lukas dodged the first swing, his body moving with the grace of Ether-enhanced reflexes. He countered with a quick strike to the man's side, but the armor was thick, absorbing most of the blow. The Drevyn warrior snarled, swinging again, the axe coming dangerously close.

Lukas activated Ether Surge, feeling his speed and strength boost in an instant. He ducked under the next attack, his saber flashing as he targeted the weak spots the system had highlighted. The blade slipped through a gap in the armor, and the warrior staggered back, blood spilling from the wound.

But it wasn't enough.

The warrior roared in anger, his axe swinging with renewed fury. Lukas barely dodged in time, the wind from the blow brushing against his cheek. He needed more power.

The system pulsed, and Lukas activated Mana Shield just in time, the axe crashing into the shield with a force that nearly knocked him off his feet. The shield flickered but held, absorbing the blow as Lukas took a deep breath, steadying himself.

With a final push, Lukas struck again, his saber finding the warrior's neck. The Drevyn elite collapsed to the ground, his body going limp.

[Ether Absorption: 75% toward Level 3]

By the time the battle was over, the Valerian forces had secured a hard-won victory. The Drevyns had been driven back, but the cost had been high. Lukas stood in the aftermath, his body aching but his mind racing with the progress he'd made. He was close—so close to Level 3.

As the camp settled into an uneasy calm, Lukas knew what he had to do. The battlefield had given him much-needed Ether, but now it was time to seek out the hidden places, the ancient zones rich with untapped power.

He found Zane near the edge of camp, sharpening his blades. "It's time," Lukas said quietly.

Zane glanced up, a knowing look in his eyes. "Ready to chase some ancient Ether?"

Lukas nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "More than ready."
