Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Surprised

Jilly walked in the corridor with her hands behind her back clasped together. The clicking sound of her heels could be heard loudly in the empty corridor. She was always the type of woman who wear heels and a mini skirt to work or in daily life. She had found herself when she established her work.

She was walking to Katherine's house to get some work which she told her to do. She stopped in front of her door and was about to knock when the door was opened from the inside.

To her surprise, she found Cayne opening the door of Katherine's. She was surprised, but she masked it well. But Cayne was a different story, the surprise was shown all over his face.

"Jilly, I didn't know you were in town," Cayne said in stammering. He let go of the door handle and gulped hard. What a stupid thing to say, he scolded himself.

"Am I not allowed to be here?" She asked him back. Her facial of no emotion made him think that he was doomed. Well, maybe he was.

Trust.

One word, one thing that had not developed in her.

"Is Katherine inside? I need to get some work from her." She asked but didn't wait for him to answer, but she didn't need his answer as well. She walked past him, avoiding any touch with him even just a little or by lucky accident.

"Jilly." A surprised Katherine tightened her silk bathrobe around her naked body unconsciously. She had just gotten done showering and wonder if Jilly saw Cayne on the way.

"Why is everyone so surprised today? Am I a deadman? Did I scare you that much?" Jilly asked, reading her face. She didn't need to see her body down below to know what was happening.

"Everyone?" Katherine asked, hoping that she didn't mean to say it was Cayne.

"Cayne was." She shrugged her shoulders carelessly. Kathrine choked on her saliva as she mentioned Cayne. Jilly didn't mind her and asked for the thing she came for.

"Give me a copy of the transactions for this month and my missed calls and emails," Jilly ordered her as she was an assistant slash a staff working under her brother. That was how Katherine could afford the apartment where she lives now.

"Be right back." Kathrine obediently nodded her head and didn't dare to speak out of context.

Kathrine scurried out to get the things Jilly asked for, leaving Jilly standing by herself in the middle of her house. There was nothing that caught her eye in Katherine's house as it was like an average house in the building.

When she felt her hand being grabbed, she immediately moved it away. But she was not fast enough. She turned her head around and saw Cayne was the one who grabbed her hand.

She shot him a hatred look that spoke her feelings.

"Jilly." His voice sounded like begging, but Jilly didn't fall for that so easily. He let go of her hand but was going to hug her. As he let go of her hand, she put on a guard up. She stopped him from coming any closer to her.

"Hurry up, Kathrine!" Jilly yelled out. What took her so long just to get the papers?

A well-dressed Kathrine walked out with papers in her hands. She handed them to Jilly and she took them without giving her another glance. She walked out of her house and made her way up to her own house.

She hated that she had to use the elevator to get up to her floor. She could hear his footsteps following her. She wanted to tell him to stop, but if she spoke, she was afraid that she would break and she will not break in front of him. She hated being vulnerable, she hated it the most.

They got into the elevator and ride it in silence. Cayne stood beside her quietly while looking at her now and then.

As the elevator dinged, she was ready to walk and hoped to leave him behind. She saw him move but decided to ignore him.

She should have not done that, because it caused trouble. He pressed a pause button, so the doors of the elevator wouldn't open. Then, he came to stand in front of her.

"Talk to me, please." Cayne brought his hand up and touched her cheek which she immediately reacted by moving away. "Baby."

"Move." He wanted her to talk, and she spoke. "You're wasting my time, Isaiah." She said, looking back at him with strong eyes.

"I have a lot of work to do rather than talking to you," she continued.

"Am I not worth your time?"

"No." She replied without a pause and she said it so strongly. "Oh, if you want to see your girlfriend, you better see her somewhere else. You're on the blacklist from now on."

"I can't see you here?" He asked in a hurtful tone and dumbfounded.

"Isaiah... your girlfriend is not me." Jilly pressed her finger on his chest. She pressed it real hard and he didn't seem to flinch or got hurt by that.

"But her." Her eyes shake as she finished her sentence.

"What are you talking about, Jilly? My girlfriend is only you." Cayne denied the fact that she spoke about herself like that.

"Don't play dumb in front of me, Isaiah. Do you think I didn't know what you have been doing behind my back? I should have dug deeper. First love never dies, is it?" Jilly raised her eyebrow and she let out a chuckle of bitterness.

He was stunned and stiffened. She took that opportunity to slip out of him. She pressed a button to open the doors of the elevator and she did it successfully. She left him alone to think about his actions and what he wanted or needed.

It hurt her that no matter how long they have been together, he would always come back to his first love. He might love Jilly, but that didn't stop him from being in love with his first love even though his first love has had a new partner. This was what so-called scandalous relationships are.

Before she walked into her house, she stopped just to have a last glance. She glanced to the elevator and their eyes meet. At that moment, she let her tears come down freely.

How could she love someone who was in love with another woman and how could she ignore that for so long?

"Be happy with someone you should, Cayne." She mouthed, wishing him sincerely. Even though it came out only as mimicked to him, he caught it.

He couldn't, he can't lose her.

Seeing her still standing by the door, Cayne determined to fix them. He jogged up to her, but she closed the door just before he could reach her.

"Jilly, please." He banged on the door, hoping she would open it for him for one last time.

"Baby." He called in desperately and placed his head on the door hopelessly.
