Chapter 1 - Coming to steal him away from me

It was one of those afternoons where time seemed to crawl, the sun hanging lazily in the sky as the warmth of the day filled every corner of Angela's small room. A gentle breeze stirred the light curtains, casting fleeting shadows across her bed, but even that felt too soft to make a difference. Angela sat cross-legged on her bed, her phone held limply in her hand as she absently scrolled through her WhatsApp. No messages. No notifications. It was as if the entire world had gone quiet, leaving her in a dull pocket of time, waiting for something—anything—to happen.

She had already viewed everyone's status updates, but none of them made her feel connected. It was just the same old thing—people busy with their lives while she sat here, feeling increasingly isolated. Even the games she played to pass the time had lost their charm. The excitement she once felt was replaced by boredom. It felt like everything was stuck in an endless loop of nothingness.

Angela tossed her phone to the side, falling back against her pillows with a deep sigh. The ceiling fan above whirred quietly, moving the warm, thick air around the room, but it did little to stir the energy within her. She felt sleepy, but no matter how hard she tried to close her eyes and drift off, sleep evaded her. Her mind was too restless, searching for something to fill the void this lazy afternoon had left behind.

After what felt like hours of pointless daydreaming, Angela sat up again, running her hands through her hair, feeling the need to do something, anything, to shake off the lethargy. Then, an idea came to her. Mrs. Porter, her lively neighbor, always had something going on, and her six-month-old son, Jamie, had a way of lighting up any room with his presence. The thought of seeing the baby's innocent smile brought a little spark of energy back to her. A smile tugged at her lips as she slipped into her sandals and made her way next door.

The warm sun greeted her as she stepped outside, the light breeze doing little to cool the hot afternoon. When she reached Mrs. Porter's house, the door was already open. Angela could hear quiet laughter from inside, and the familiar warmth of the house instantly lifted her spirits. She peeked inside and found Mrs. Porter seated on the couch, bouncing Jamie on her knee. His laughter was infectious, and Angelina couldn't help but feel a surge of affection for the little boy.

With a playful grin, Angela stepped into the house and announced, "I'm here for my husband, Jamie. I've missed him terribly!"

Mrs. Porter laughed, her eyes twinkling with amusement as she shook her head. "Oh, I see how it is. Coming to steal him away from me, are you?"

"Of course," Angela chuckled, walking over to Jamie. who was watching her with wide, curious eyes. she knelt in front of Jamie, giving him a soft tap on the nose. "How could I stay away from my favorite guy for so long?"

Jamie squealed with delight, his tiny hands waving in the air as he kicked his feet excitedly. Angela couldn't resist him any longer. She scooped him up into her arms, spinning him around as his giggles filled the room. It was moments like these that made everything else fade away—the boredom, the quietness, the stillness of the afternoon. With Jamie in her arms, everything felt brighter.

"How about we go out for a bit, Jamie? Want some biscuits?" Angela cooed softly, smiling down at him and kissing his forehead

Mrs. Porter smiled warmly. "Go ahead, Angela. He's been fussy all day. A little outing might do him some good."

With Mrs. Porter's blessing, Angela carried Jamie outside, the heat of the afternoon wrapping around them like a blanket. The baby babbled softly, his little fists occasionally tugging at Angela's hair as they made their way down the street to the corner shop. His bright eyes took in the world around him, though he was too young to understand much. Still, his innocent wonder was enough to lighten Angela's mood.

At the shop, Angela bought a small pack of biscuits, knowing Jamie wouldn't eat them but happy to share something sweet with him. As they walked back to her house, she smiled down at his sleepy little face. The quiet joy of holding him made everything else—her boredom, her restlessness—disappear.

Back in her room, she set Jamie down gently on her bed, watching as his tiny hands gripped the blanket and his eyes drooped in drowsy contentment. The dullness of the afternoon had melted away, replaced by the simple warmth of Jamie's presence. Even in silence, he filled the room with life.

For the first time that day, Angela felt at peace, knowing that the rest of her afternoon would be spent in the quiet company of this little boy who had unknowingly brightened her world.
