*Angela's POV*
I lay back on the bed, staring at my phone after Maya's latest message. I couldn't stop thinking about her words. Maybe Facebook wasn't such a bad idea. Sure, I hadn't logged in for ages, but what was the harm in giving it another try? If nothing else, it might help kill some of the boredom that crept in when Jamie was asleep, and it would give Maya something to stop nagging me about.
I tapped on the Facebook app, which had been sitting on my phone untouched for who knows how long. A flood of memories came rushing back—the endless scrolls, the random posts, the awkward messages from people I didn't really know. Still, Maya had a point: it might be different now. Maybe there was something worth checking out.
The app opened, and I hesitated for a second, my thumb hovering over the screen. Alright, let's do this. I clicked the option to create a new account. A few minutes later, after typing in my details, picking a profile picture that was decent enough, and waiting for Facebook to verify my information, it was done. I was officially back.
My screen lit up with the generic welcome message: "Welcome to Facebook, Angela!" I chuckled at the thought of what Maya would say if she saw me now, after all the resistance I'd put up. The temptation to text her right away was strong, but instead, I decided to explore a little.
What was the first thing I should do?
I thought back to what Maya had mentioned earlier—Lucas. That guy had always been something else back in school. Loud, attention-seeking, and always surrounded by girls. He wasn't someone I kept in touch with, but I couldn't deny the curiosity burning inside me. What was he up to these days?
Without giving it much more thought, I typed his name into the search bar. His profile popped up almost immediately, and I clicked on it. His page looked just like I expected—full of flashy photos, videos, and the kind of content that made you roll your eyes, but you couldn't stop watching. Some things never change.
And then I found it—his latest story. This is what Maya was talking about. I tapped on it, and the video began to play.
There was Lucas, sitting on the floor, a wide grin plastered across his face. In front of him, a girl was twerking, her movements wild and exaggerated. The camera panned between her and Lucas, who was clearly enjoying every second. The entire scene screamed chaos, and I couldn't help but shake my head. Of course, Lucas would post something like this. It was ridiculous, yet so… him.
I smiled and bit back a laugh. My eyes widened for a moment, but I wasn't shocked—not really. Lucas had always been that guy, the one who thrived on attention and didn't care what people thought. I had to give him credit for consistency, though.
I closed out of the story and immediately opened WhatsApp, my fingers flying across the screen as I typed a message to Maya.
**Me**: "OMG, Maya, I just saw Lucas's story. What even was that?? I swear he hasn't changed at all!"
The message barely had time to send before my phone buzzed with her reply.
**Maya**: "I KNOW, right?? I told you it was crazy! That guy is always doing the most."
I laughed softly, leaning back on the bed, feeling a little more at ease now. Chatting with Maya always had a way of brightening up my mood. It felt like old times, gossiping about school and people we once knew.
**Me**: "It's so typical of him. Honestly, I'm not even surprised, but still, I can't believe he posted that!"
Maya was quick to reply, as usual.
**Maya**: "Girl, you remember how he was back at school. He was always all over the girls, always pulling some stunt just to stay in the spotlight. It's like he never grew out of it!"
I chuckled to myself, thinking back to all those times Lucas would try to impress people—usually with ridiculous antics. There was always something about him that drew attention, whether you liked him or not.
**Me**: "Yeah, I remember. He acted like every girl was his, like we were all there just to feed his ego."
I smiled as I typed the message, shaking my head. Lucas was Lucas, and nothing was going to change that.
**Maya**: "Exactly! I mean, we all kind of knew that about him, but some of those girls really fell for it, remember? It was like watching a bad reality show."
I could almost hear Maya laughing through the screen. It was contagious, and soon, I found myself grinning.
For a few minutes, we went back and forth, reminiscing about the old days and laughing at all the crazy things that happened back then. It was nice, catching up like this, even if it was over something as silly as Lucas's Facebook story.
After a while, as our conversation slowed down, I minimized WhatsApp and opened Facebook again. My new account felt empty, untouched, and I scrolled through the newsfeed half-heartedly. Just as I'd expected, there was nothing much. A couple of random posts from pages I didn't care about, ads for things I'd never buy, and some friend suggestions based on my contacts.
Why did I even come back on here?
The feeling of pointlessness settled over me as I scrolled through the feed. There was nothing that really grabbed my attention, nothing that made me feel like I'd missed out by staying away. After a few minutes, I closed the app with a sigh. Well, that was underwhelming.
I switched back to WhatsApp and picked up the conversation with Maya again.
**Me**: "Yeah, I just checked my new Facebook account. There's literally nothing interesting. Not sure why I even bothered."
It didn't take long for Maya to reply.
**Maya**: "That's just how it is at first. You gotta give it time. Once you start adding people and following stuff you like, it gets better."
I wasn't convinced, but I decided to humor her.
**Me**: "Maybe. I'll give it a try, but honestly, I'm not expecting much."
**Maya**: "You'll see. It'll grow on you. Plus, you can keep up with people like Lucas and all the craziness they post. Keeps things interesting, at least!"
I smiled, appreciating Maya's endless enthusiasm. Even when I wasn't feeling it, she always had a way of making things sound better than they were. Maybe Facebook wasn't going to be all that exciting, but at least it gave me something to do when things got too quiet.
We continued chatting, laughing about Lucas's antics and reminiscing about the good old days. It felt nice, reconnecting with Maya like this. Even though we were miles apart, our conversation flowed easily, just like it always had.
But eventually, the conversation started to wind down.
**Maya**: "Hey, I gotta go do some stuff, but we'll chat later, okay? Don't forget to check Facebook every now and then!"
I smiled at her energy, the way she was always on the go.
**Me**: "Sure, talk to you later."
With that, Maya logged off, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I set my phone down and glanced at Jamie, still fast asleep. Maybe Facebook wouldn't be so bad after all.
