Chereads / Vanguard: Rise of Raijin / Chapter 8 - Into the Abyss

Chapter 8 - Into the Abyss

The team advanced cautiously through the dim corridors of the dungeon, their senses heightened after the battle with the Shadow Beasts. The air felt thicker, more oppressive with every step they took, and the silence was unnerving. Only the occasional drip of water echoed off the stone walls, adding to the eerie atmosphere.

Raijin glanced around, his grip tightening on the hilt of his katana. His mind raced as he replayed the earlier battle. The beasts were unlike anything he had faced before, and if that was just the beginning, he couldn't imagine what horrors awaited them deeper inside.

"This place gives me the creeps," Akira muttered, keeping his daggers at the ready. His usually cocky demeanor was replaced by a more serious expression.

"Stay sharp," Hana said, her eyes scanning the corridor ahead. "This dungeon is designed to mess with your head. Don't let your guard down."

Kaito, leading the group, came to a sudden stop. "We're coming up on the first major boss," he announced, his voice low but firm. "Everyone, get ready."

Raijin's heart skipped a beat. He had heard stories about the dungeon bosses in Vanguard Genesis, each one more deadly than the last. But this was an early-access raid—a hidden challenge that only a select few guilds had been invited to. No one knew exactly what they would be facing.

As they rounded the corner, a massive iron door loomed ahead, its surface etched with ancient runes that glowed faintly. The door seemed to hum with energy, as if something powerful waited just beyond.

"This is it," Kaito said, stepping forward and placing a hand on the door. "Everyone, check your gear. Make sure you're stocked on potions and ready for a tough fight."

Raijin quickly opened his inventory and did a final check. His health potions were fully stocked, and his mana was at maximum capacity. He took a deep breath, his pulse quickening. This was the moment he had been preparing for. A real test of his skills.

Hana gave him a nod, her expression unreadable. "You've done well so far, Raijin. But don't get cocky. Boss fights in dungeons like this are unpredictable."

"I won't," Raijin assured her. He knew better than to let his guard down now.

Kaito pushed the door open with a creaking groan, revealing a vast, shadowy chamber beyond. The ceiling was so high it disappeared into darkness, and the walls were lined with jagged stone pillars. In the center of the room, a large figure stood motionless, shrouded in mist.

As the group stepped inside, the figure stirred. Slowly, it rose to its full height easily three times the size of a normal human. Its body was made of black stone, with molten cracks running through its surface, glowing with an eerie orange light. Its eyes, two burning orbs of fire, locked onto the intruders.

The Molten Golem, the first boss of the dungeon, let out a deep, rumbling growl as it lumbered toward them, each step shaking the ground beneath their feet.

"Spread out!" Kaito shouted, drawing his blades. "Melee fighters, focus on dodging its attacks and hitting its legs. Ranged, aim for the glowing cracks. Raijin, stay close to me!"

Raijin nodded, adrenaline pumping through his veins. He darted to the side, positioning himself next to Kaito as the Molten Golem raised its massive fist and brought it crashing down toward the group.

The ground shook violently, but they managed to dodge just in time. The golem's fist smashed into the stone floor, leaving a crater in its wake. Raijin didn't hesitate, he dashed forward, katana in hand, and slashed at the creature's leg, aiming for one of the glowing cracks.

His blade connected sparks flying as the golem let out a pained roar. But its retaliation was swift. The golem swung its arm toward Raijin, and he barely managed to roll out of the way, the force of the blow sending shockwaves through the room.

Kaito leaped in, landing several precise strikes on the golem's other leg, while Hana fired arrows from a distance, each one aimed at the glowing cracks in the golem's torso. Akira and Mei worked together, attacking the creature from behind while dodging its powerful swings.

Raijin kept his focus, his movements fluid as he weaved in and out of the golem's reach. He had fought large bosses before, but nothing with this level of raw power. Every attack felt like it could crush him instantly if he made one wrong move.

"Raijin, with me!" Kaito called out as he launched another flurry of attacks at the golem's leg. "We need to cripple it so the others can land more hits on its core."

Raijin nodded and moved in tandem with Kaito, both of them targeting the creature's weak points. They hacked and slashed at its legs, their blades flashing in the dim light of the chamber. The golem roared in frustration, its movements becoming more erratic as it tried to fend off their relentless assault.

Suddenly, the golem reared back, its body glowing brighter as molten lava began to seep from its cracks.

"Get back!" Hana shouted. "It's about to unleash a powerful attack!"

Raijin barely had time to react before the golem slammed both of its fists into the ground. The floor beneath them split open, molten lava surging up from the cracks and spilling across the chamber.

The team scattered, each of them narrowly avoiding the streams of lava. Raijin's heart pounded in his chest as he jumped onto a nearby stone platform, the heat from the lava searing the air around him.

"We need to finish this before it gets worse!" Kaito shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the lava.

Raijin gritted his teeth and prepared for one final push. He waited for the golem's next attack, watching its movements closely. When it raised its arm again, preparing to smash the ground, Raijin saw his chance.

He sprinted forward, leaping over a pool of lava, and launched himself at the golem's leg. With a powerful strike, his katana pierced deep into the glowing crack, sending a shockwave through the creature's body.

The golem let out a deafening roar as it staggered, its leg buckling under the force of Raijin's attack. Kaito seized the opportunity, landing a devastating blow on the golem's other leg, causing it to collapse to one knee.

"Now! Aim for the core!" Hana commanded.

Raijin and the others converged on the golem's chest, where a massive, glowing crack had formed. With a synchronized assault, they unleashed everything they had. Blades, arrows, and magic collided with the core, shattering it into pieces.

The golem let out one final, earth-shaking roar before its body crumbled into dust, the molten lava disappearing along with it.

For a moment, the chamber was silent.

Then, a system message appeared before them.

Boss Defeated!

Rewards Unlocked: Legendary Molten Core, 8000 XP, Molten Armor Piece

Raijin let out a breath he didn't realize he had been holding, collapsing to one knee in exhaustion. His body ached, and his hands were trembling from the intensity of the fight.

"We did it," Kaito said, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "That was insane."

Hana lowered her bow, her expression as calm as ever, though Raijin could see the relief in her eyes. "Well fought, everyone. That was only the first major boss, but it was no small feat."

As the team collected their rewards, Raijin's thoughts drifted back to the tournament. This victory was a step in the right direction, but he knew the challenges ahead would only grow more difficult. The dungeon wasn't finished, and the tournament was looming ever closer.

But for the first time in a long while, Raijin felt something he hadn't allowed himself to feel: hope.

He stood up, his resolve stronger than ever.

"I'm ready for whatever comes next."
