The room fell deathly silent as the team braced for what was coming. The shadowy figure that had darted in and out of their vision moments before now seemed to vanish completely, leaving only the oppressive tension hanging in the air. Every breath felt heavy, each second stretching longer than the last.
Raijin's hand tightened around his katana. His senses were on high alert, trying to catch any movement, any sound that could betray their unseen enemy. But there was nothing, only the faint sound of the team's own breathing and the distant hum of the dungeon's unnatural energy.
"What the hell was that?" Akira muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kaito shook his head, his jaw clenched. "I don't know, but it's fast. And dangerous."
"More dangerous than the statue?" Hana asked, already drawing another arrow.
"Definitely," Kaito replied. "Be ready for anything. Whatever it is, it's toying with us."
Raijin's heart pounded in his chest, his muscles tense and coiled, ready to strike. The air around them felt heavier, and thicker, as though the dungeon itself was conspiring against them.
Then, without warning, the shadow returned—darting in and out of their sight like a flicker of dark flame. It moved with such speed that it was almost impossible to track.
"Stay close!" Kaito ordered, his voice low and steady. "Don't let it split us up!"
The figure appeared again, this time to Raijin's right, a mere blur of motion. He slashed his katana in the direction of the movement, but his blade met nothing but empty air. Before he could react, a cold rush of wind swept past him, and he felt a sharp sting on his arm.
"Damn it!" Raijin hissed, clutching his arm. Blood seeped through his fingers where the unseen enemy had struck him.
"Raijin, are you alright?" Mei asked, her voice filled with concern.
"I'm fine," Raijin grunted, his mind racing. "But this thing is fast. It's like fighting a ghost."
"We can't keep reacting to it," Kaito said, frustration lacing his tone. "We need to predict its movements or we'll get picked off one by one."
Hana's eyes narrowed as she scanned the darkness. "It's a phantom. A high-level assassin class enemy. They're designed to ambush, strike, and disappear before you even realize they're there."
"Fantastic," Akira muttered. "So we're dealing with an invisible hitman."
"It's not completely invisible," Raijin said, trying to stay calm. "We've seen it flash by a few times. We just need to catch it before it vanishes again."
Kaito's eyes glinted with determination. "If we can force it to reveal itself, we might have a chance. Everyone spread out a bit, but not too far. Make it think it has an opening, then we strike together."
The group shifted, keeping enough distance to tempt the assassin into attacking, but close enough to support one another when the moment came. Every muscle in Raijin's body was tensed, ready for the next attack.
Seconds ticked by like hours.
Then, the air shifted again a faint, almost imperceptible breeze.
"There!" Kaito shouted, pointing to a flicker of movement near Raijin.
Raijin didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, slashing his katana in a wide arc. His blade connected with something solid, and a hiss of pain followed. The shadow figure reappeared for a split second, staggering backward from the blow, its cloak flaring out like smoke.
"Now!" Kaito ordered.
Hana loosed an arrow with pinpoint precision, aiming for the phantom's head. The arrow struck true, embedding itself in the shadowy figure's shoulder. The assassin let out another guttural sound, but instead of falling, it dissolved into mist and vanished once again.
"Did we get it?" Akira asked, his daggers poised for another strike.
"No," Raijin panted, wiping the sweat from his brow. "It's still out there. I can feel it."
"It's weakening, though," Kaito said, his voice steady but tense. "We're close."
Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled, and the temperature in the room dropped even further. The shadow reappeared, this time directly in front of Mei. Its form was more solid now less of a blur, more of a figure, tall and cloaked, with two gleaming daggers in its hands.
It moved with lightning speed, raising its weapons to strike Mei down.
"Mei!" Raijin yelled, his body moving on instinct.
Before the assassin could land its blow, Raijin charged forward, slamming into the phantom with his full weight. The force of the impact knocked the assassin off balance, and Raijin followed up with a swift strike, his katana cutting across its torso. The blade hummed with energy, fueled by Raijin's desperation to protect his friend.
The assassin staggered back, visibly damaged. Its hood fell away, revealing a pale, gaunt face with hollow, glowing eyes. It snarled, a sound that chilled Raijin to the bone.
"It's vulnerable!" Kaito shouted. "Finish it!"
The team converged on the phantom, unleashing a flurry of coordinated attacks. Akira's daggers flashed through the air, cutting deep into the assassin's side. Hana fired another arrow, this time striking it square in the chest. Riku, using his heavy shield, slammed into the assassin with full force, knocking it to the ground.
Raijin saw his opening. With a battle cry, he raised his katana high and brought it down in a decisive strike. His blade cut through the phantom's chest, and with a final, blood-curdling scream, the assassin dissolved into a cloud of black mist, fading into nothingness.
The room fell silent once more, the oppressive energy lifting as the assassin's presence vanished.
Raijin stood there for a moment, panting heavily, his katana still raised. His heart was pounding in his chest, but a sense of relief washed over him.
"We… we did it," Hana whispered, lowering her bow.
Mei rushed over to Raijin, her hands glowing as she began to heal the wound on his arm. "Are you okay?" she asked, her voice soft with concern.
Raijin nodded, wincing as the healing magic sealed the cut. "Yeah, thanks to you guys."
"That was too close," Akira said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "I don't think I've ever fought something that fast before."
"That's what makes these dungeons so dangerous," Kaito said, sheathing his blades. "The enemies are unpredictable. You never know what you'll be up against."
Riku let out a deep breath, lowering his shield. "At least it's over. For now."
Raijin looked around at his teammates, his heart swelling with a mixture of pride and gratitude. They had faced down a deadly assassin and come out on top. But as he glanced down the dark hallway ahead of them, he knew this was just the beginning.
The dungeon was far from finished with them.
"Let's keep moving," Raijin said quietly, his resolve stronger than ever. "We've still got a long way to go."
Kaito nodded in agreement. "Stay sharp, everyone. The deeper we go, the worse it's going to get."
With that, the team pressed forward, their footsteps echoing softly in the dark, silent corridors of the dungeon. The shadows seemed to close in around them, and Raijin couldn't shake the feeling that something far more dangerous awaited them just beyond the next turn.
The real battle was still ahead.
