The music came to an end, and Emilia glanced once more toward the center of the ballroom. Python looked in her direction and laughed. Edward's gaze followed the elf's, and he seemed devastated. Arthur stood beside Emilia and extended his hand as the musicians prepared for the next piece.
"Forgive me, but I don't know how to dance," Emilia replied, embarrassed. "I haven't given much time to dance lessons..."
"That doesn't matter; I'll lead," he said, taking her hands.
"I might step on your foot," Emilia protested, blushing at the sight of her hands clasped with the elf's.
"Not if I'm faster than you," he replied with a smile.
Unlike the previous dance, this melody was softer and more romantic. Arthur stayed true to his word, guiding Emilia through the entire song. Their movements were light and gentle, and she noticed he never took his gaze off her, as though he was searching her face for something.
"Am I... doing alright?" she asked, feeling shy under his steady gaze.
"I'd say you must secretly practice every day," he replied, and they both laughed.
When the music ended, some couples exchanged partners. Breathless, Emilia led Arthur to a table to get some water, but they were stopped.
"Tradition calls for a change of partners," Edward said, taking her hand. "Come, Emilia."
Before she could protest, the music began, and the new pairs started to dance. Unlike with Arthur, her rhythm with Edward didn't align well, and she often stepped on the king's foot.
"Sorry… sorry..." she muttered each time it happened. Glancing to the side, she noticed Arthur sitting at a table, not dancing. She wanted to be with him, and the music seemed to drag on.
"Why aren't you… ow… wearing the gift I gave you?" Edward asked, wincing every time Emilia stepped on his foot.
"Sorry... I just didn't think it suited me," Emilia lied, biting her lip.
"Emilia, I truly didn't mean to hurt you by saying that..."
"Edward, there's no need to apologize. I don't hold any grudge against you," Emilia began. "I've already forgiven you. You'll always be a friend to me, but I need time to process everything that's happening."
Edward clenched his fists.
"So that's how you see me? Just as your little friend?"
"The only one, actually..." Emilia replied. "To be honest, you're… were… like an older brother to me."
"And the elf?" Edward asked, frowning. "How do you see him?"
Emilia paused, pondering. How did she see Arthur? She'd never truly thought about it. For so long, she had despised him, especially in her past life. But in this one… he was different. She felt drawn to him and safe in his presence. It was strange to want to be close to her former enemy.
"I... honestly don't know."
Edward released Emilia's hand mid-dance and left the ballroom. Python hurried after him, but he waved her away. What was wrong with him?
