Chapter 59 - The Beast Unleashed and Final Preparations

In the heart of his shadowy domain, the general stood before a massive iron cage. Inside, a monstrous creature paced restlessly, its claws scraping against the bars. Its eyes glowed with a feral intensity, and its muscular body was covered in scales as dark as night.

"You've waited long enough, my pet," the general said, his tone a mixture of malice and triumph. "Tonight, you will feast."

The beast growled, its deep rumble shaking the ground. The general opened a book bound in black leather, its pages inscribed with ancient, forbidden text. Chanting in a low, guttural tone, he completed the ritual, and the cage disintegrated into shadowy mist.

The beast roared, its voice a terrifying echo that seemed to pierce the fabric of reality. It lunged forward, its claws leaving scorch marks on the ground.

"Go," the general commanded. "Destroy Lin Xi and Su Qinghe. Leave no trace of them or their village."

The beast leapt into the darkness, vanishing as the general's laughter echoed through the stronghold.

Back in the village, Lin Xi and Su Qinghe worked tirelessly through the night. They had fortified key locations, reinforced the barriers, and set up additional traps.

"We've done all we can," Su Qinghe said, wiping sweat from his brow. "Now we wait."

Lin Xi nodded, though her heart was heavy. The pendant around her neck pulsated faintly, a sign that danger was drawing closer.

The villagers gathered in the central square, where Lin Xi and Su Qinghe addressed them.

"We've faced the revenants and survived," Lin Xi began, her voice steady despite the weight of responsibility. "But this fight isn't over. The enemy will come back stronger. We must be ready to stand together."

The villagers nodded, their determination shining through their fear.

Su Qinghe stepped forward. "Each of you has shown incredible courage. Remember, we're not just fighting for survival—we're fighting for the future of this village and everyone we love."

As dawn broke, an unnatural darkness swept over the forest. The birds stopped singing, and the wind carried a low, menacing growl. The lookout on the watchtower sounded the alarm.

"It's coming!" he shouted, his voice filled with terror.

Lin Xi and Su Qinghe rushed to the frontlines, where the villagers had taken their positions. The trees trembled, and then, with a deafening roar, the beast emerged.

It stood over ten feet tall, its scales shimmering like obsidian in the dim light. Its eyes burned with an otherworldly fire, and its claws gleamed like forged steel.

"What in the world is that?" one of the hunters whispered, his hands trembling.

Su Qinghe's face darkened. "It's not just a beast. It's a war construct—created with dark magic to annihilate everything in its path."

The beast let out another roar, charging at the village with terrifying speed.

Lin Xi stepped forward, her pendant glowing brightly. She unleashed a beam of energy that struck the beast, causing it to stagger momentarily.

The villagers launched their attack, firing arrows and throwing spears. But the beast's scales were nearly impenetrable.

Su Qinghe raised his staff, summoning vines from the ground to entangle the creature's legs. It thrashed violently, breaking free with ease.

"It's too strong!" one of the villagers cried.

"No," Lin Xi said firmly. "We can do this. We have to."

She charged at the beast, her new sword in hand. The blade, though not enchanted, gleamed with a determination that matched her own. She slashed at the beast's side, finding a weak spot between its scales. The creature howled in pain, its movements becoming more erratic.

Su Qinghe analyzed the beast's movements, noticing a faint glow at the center of its chest. "The core!" he shouted to Lin Xi. "Its power comes from the core in its chest. We have to destroy it!"

Lin Xi nodded, dodging the beast's massive claws. "Easier said than done!"

The villagers rallied, using their traps to slow the creature. Nets and ropes tangled its limbs, giving Lin Xi and Su Qinghe a brief opening.

"Now!" Su Qinghe yelled.

Lin Xi leapt into the air, her pendant channeling all its energy into her blade. She struck the beast's chest, aiming directly for the glowing core.

The beast roared in agony, its body convulsing as cracks spread across its scales.

With one final burst of energy, the beast collapsed, its body disintegrating into ash. The villagers erupted into cheers, their relief palpable.

But Su Qinghe's expression remained grim. "This was only a test," he said quietly to Lin Xi. "The general sent this beast to gauge our strength. He's planning something far worse."

Lin Xi's hand tightened around her sword. "Then we'll be ready. Whatever he throws at us, we'll fight back."

As the villagers began repairing the damage, Lin Xi and Su Qinghe retreated to their study to plan their next move.

"We need to find the general's stronghold," Su Qinghe said. "If we can strike at the source, we might have a chance to end this once and for all."

Lin Xi nodded, determination burning in her eyes. "Then that's what we'll do."
