Chapter 60 - Secrets Revealed

The morning sun rose over the village, casting its warm light over the remnants of the battlefield. Villagers moved through the wreckage, salvaging what they could and mending broken structures. Though they had triumphed, the scars of the battle were visible everywhere.

Lin Xi stood atop a hill overlooking the village, her gaze distant. Her hands were still trembling from the encounter with the beast. Su Qinghe approached, carrying a cup of herbal tea.

"Drink this," he said gently. "You need to recover."

Lin Xi took the cup, nodding her thanks. "We won today, but at what cost? I can't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning."

Su Qinghe sat beside her. "You're not wrong. That creature wasn't sent to destroy us—it was sent to test us. The general now knows our strength and weaknesses."

Lin Xi frowned. "Then we need to move fast. We can't keep waiting for him to strike."

After a short rest, Lin Xi and Su Qinghe gathered the village's leaders to discuss their next move.

"We need to find the general's stronghold," Su Qinghe said, spreading a map across the table. "From what we've learned, it's hidden deep within the Dark Mountains. That's where his power originates."

"But the Dark Mountains are a death trap," one of the elders protested. "No one who goes there returns."

Lin Xi slammed her hand on the table. "Then we'll be the first. If we don't stop him, he'll bring his entire army here, and no one will survive."

A murmur of agreement spread through the room, though fear lingered in their eyes.

"We'll prepare an expedition," Su Qinghe said. "Only the most skilled fighters and trackers will join us. The rest will stay to defend the village."

Deep within the Dark Mountains, the general paced in his lair. He stood before a massive map of the region, his fingers tracing over the locations of key villages and strongholds.

"So, they managed to defeat the beast," he mused, his tone amused rather than concerned. "It seems the Guardian bloodline still holds some power."

A shadowy figure stepped forward from the darkness. It was one of his lieutenants, a spectral warrior clad in black armor.

"What are your orders, my lord?" the figure asked.

"Prepare the revenant legions," the general replied. "Let the girl and her allies think they're winning. We'll let them come to us—and when they do, we'll crush them."

The lieutenant bowed. "And the artifact? Shall I retrieve it?"

The general's eyes gleamed with malice. "Not yet. Let them bring it to me. They'll think they can use it against me, but they'll only seal their own doom."

As night fell, Lin Xi and Su Qinghe found themselves alone in the study, poring over ancient texts. The lantern light cast flickering shadows on the walls, creating an almost intimate atmosphere.

"Do you think we can really win?" Lin Xi asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Su Qinghe looked up, his gaze steady. "I believe in you. Your strength, your determination—they're what give us hope."

Lin Xi felt a warmth spread through her chest at his words. She looked at him, truly seeing the depth of his dedication for the first time.

"Thank you," she said softly. "For standing by me through all of this."

Su Qinghe hesitated, as if weighing his next words carefully. "I'm not just standing by you, Lin Xi. I'm fighting with you. Not because I have to, but because I want to. Because you mean more to me than you know."

Lin Xi's breath caught, but before she could respond, a loud knock interrupted them.

"Lin Xi! Su Qinghe! There's something you need to see!"

They rushed outside, where a group of villagers stood around an arrow embedded in a tree. A piece of parchment was tied to it.

Su Qinghe untied the parchment and read it aloud:

"To the Guardian and her scholar—

You are braver than most, but bravery is not enough.

The Dark Mountains await you, but beware:

You will find more than you seek, and lose more than you can bear.

Come, if you dare."

Lin Xi's hands clenched into fists. "He's taunting us."

"Or warning us," Su Qinghe said grimly.

Lin Xi's eyes burned with determination. "Either way, we're going. It's time to end this."

The village buzzed with activity as Lin Xi and Su Qinghe prepared for their expedition. They selected a small group of skilled fighters and packed supplies for the treacherous journey ahead.

As Lin Xi strapped her sword to her side, she glanced at Su Qinghe. "Are you ready for this?"

He met her gaze, a small smile on his lips. "With you? Always."

The two shared a moment of quiet understanding before turning to face the villagers.

"We'll be back," Lin Xi promised. "And when we return, this war will be over."

The villagers cheered, though the weight of their mission hung heavy in the air.

As Lin Xi and Su Qinghe led their team into the forest, the pendant around her neck glowed faintly, as if sensing the danger ahead.
