Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Preparing for Battle (rewrite)

Preparing for Battle

Morgan was concerned about the condition of the fleet and the soldiers' well-being. The soldiers had been instructed to eat a lemon daily, but many were perplexed by this. "Except for the faulty food on Altria's ship, the other ships reported no problems. The soldiers don't quite understand why you asked them to eat a lemon every day," Morgan relayed.

Morgan was curious about Lott's rationale but had no intention of asking him directly. Instead, she decided to investigate the matter herself. Scurvy and vitamin C? What are those? She was taken aback by Lott's professional terminology. If I ask directly, it might reveal my ignorance. I should learn more about this from the old crew members and see what I can figure out about the effect of lemons and vitamin C.

On the surface, Morgan simply nodded and said, "Alright, I'll inform them."

Lott stretched and bit into an apple. "Yes, it's very sweet. Is this Merlin's?" she asked.

"Indeed, I stole it from Merlin," Lott admitted with a sly smile. "Others can't manage to get it."

Morgan responded, "Well, only you could get away with it. So, please steal more."

Both Lott and Morgan chuckled at the shared joke about Merlin's sweet treats. Unbeknownst to them, Merlin observed their conversation from the shadows, feeling a mix of irritation and amusement at their antics.

Insights and Strategies

Morgan's focus shifted back to the upcoming battle. She asked Lott, "Do you believe our army can win even if we attack from behind Vortigern? How can we increase their combat effectiveness?"

Lott responded, "We can only use this to motivate the soldiers. Other methods are less effective. The best way to enhance combat effectiveness is to instil a strong belief in their cause. This belief should be for their country, not for false gods. There must also be strict discipline. However, this is challenging to replicate. Our soldiers' literacy level is low, so we rely on monetary incentives to boost their morale. It's a pity; I need to develop a better strategy to reduce losses."

Morgan was intrigued. An army driven by faith and discipline? I've never heard of such a thing. This notion sparked her ambition. I will build a similar force when I become queen. It's difficult, but I must find a way to cultivate such loyalty among our knights.

Morgan's thoughts turned to potential candidates for her envisioned order of knights. She decided to focus on younger knights who could embody this fighting spirit.

The Knights Join

Morgan left Lott and turned her attention to other matters. Her immediate focus was twofold: understanding the effects of vitamins and establishing a knightly order. She was excited about the potential to enhance Camelot's strength and ambitions.

She made her way to Altria's ship. Altria was alone on the deck, seemingly absorbed in her surroundings. Upon noticing Morgan's approach, Altria stood straight and sheathed her sword. "Your Royal Highness," she greeted respectfully.

Morgan nodded and looked around. "Where is everyone else on the ship?"

"They're eating," Altria replied.

"And you?" Morgan inquired.

"I'll eat later. The ship's pot isn't large enough to cook all the food at once," Altria explained.

Morgan was tempted to leave but decided to stay. Our knights should not be defined by their cooking methods. She decided to recruit Altria despite the minor inconvenience.

"Well, you can eat later. I have something to discuss with you," Morgan said.

"What is it?" Altria asked, her interest piqued.

Morgan looked at her seriously. "I want to form a knightly order, and I want you to be among the first to join."

Altria's eyes widened with interest. A new order of knights? This could be a significant opportunity.
